Background The Honda motor works is located near Stratton St Margaret on the eastern side of Swindon (See Fig. 1 on page 3). The site, which used to be an old airfield, covers an area of over 1.5 million square metres. The level land is ideal for the factory buildings and there is spare land available should the car plant wish to expand. There are also excellent road links nearby including the M4 motorway. Good road links are essential for a motor factory because a vast number of component parts are needed to make a car. The large labour force of over 4,000 people also need quick and easy access to the Swindon factory. 1. Study Figures 1 and 2 (on page 3) a) In what direction is the photograph looking? [1] b) What is the six figure grid reference of the building labelled B on the photograph? [2] c) Apart from the buildings, what is the other major use of the land at the car plant? [1] d) What is the number of the main road at the bottom of the photograph? [1] e) What is the map evidence that the factory is built on an old airfield? [1] f) Why is an old airfield a good site for a car plant? [2] g) Why is a close main road network important for a car factory such as the Honda plaint in Swindon? [2] 2. Study the ʹBackground informationʹ (above). With the help of an annotated sketch map, suggest reasons for the site and situation of the Honda car plant. [5] [Total 15 marks] 2

11 PART 2: HISTORY Section A Answer all the questions in this section. The section is worth 15 marks and the recommended time for this section is 15 minutes. Harold Godwinson was he a good king? The following sources relate to the years Edward the Confessor, king of England, died without any children. He was followed on the throne by Harold Godwinson, Earl of Wessex. Harold s main rival to be King of England was William, Duke of Normandy. fealty = an oath made by a lord to his king, promising to be loyal. Source A This source was written in the late Eleventh Century by an English monk from Worcester. After the burial of King Edward, Harold, son of Earl Godwin, whom the king had nominated as his successor, was chosen king by the chief men of England, and on the same day he was crowned with great ceremony by Aldred, archbishop of York. On taking over the rule of England, Harold immediately began to abolish unjust laws and to make good ones; to give money to churches and to monasteries, and to show himself humble and kind to all good men. But he treated bad men with great severity, and gave orders to his earls and sheriffs to imprison all thieves, robbers and disturbers of the kingdom. He laboured personally by sea and land for the protection of his realm. Source B This account was written in the late Eleventh Century by a Norman, William of Jumièges. Edward, king of the English, sent the archbishop of Canterbury to Duke William of Normandy, with a message appointing Duke William as heir to the kingdom. Edward later sent Harold, the greatest of all the earls in his kingdom, a man great in riches, honour and power. He did this in order that Harold might guarantee the crown to Duke William by his fealty and confirm the same with an oath made as a Christian. 1

12 When Harold set out on his mission, he was carried along by the wind until he reached Ponthieu, and there he fell into the hands of Guy, Count of Abbeville, who threw him and his men into prison. When Duke William heard of this, he sent messengers and caused Harold to be released. Harold stayed with Duke William for some time, and performed fealty to him, in respect of the kingdom of England, with many gifts. After this, Duke William sent Harold back to King Edward with many gifts. King Edward completed the term of his happy life, and departed from this world. Then Harold immediately seized the kingdom, thus breaking the oath that he had sworn to Duke William. Duke William at once sent messengers to Harold urging him not to do this, and to keep to his oath. Harold not only ignored these messages, but led the people of England away from their obedience to Duke William. Source C This image is taken from the Bayeux Tapestry, created by the Normans at the end of the Eleventh Century, once Duke William had conquered England. The scene shown below is from Harold is shown with his hands on boxes containing the bones of saints, with William sitting on the left. The text at the top of the tapestry reads Harold made his oath to Duke William. 2

13 1. What evidence is there that Source A was written by a supporter of King Harold? Use evidence from the source to explain your answer. [5 marks] 2. In what ways do Sources A and B differ in their opinions of King Harold? Use evidence from both sources to explain your answer. [5 marks] 3. What message do you think that Source C is trying to give? Use evidence from the source (including the text) to explain your answer. [5 marks] Section B Answer one question from this section. Each question is worth 15 marks and the recommended time for this section is 20 minutes. 1.
