14 Vocabulary (BESIDE the Title Page) Jamestown- the first successful ENGLISH colony in Virginia Joint-stock company- a company in which many people own stocks/shares Pilgrims- English Puritans who were escaping religious persecution Mayflower- the ship which carried the Pilgrims to the New World Mayflower Compact- the written government of the Plymouth (Pilgrims) Colony Puritans- people who believed in the pure word of God, not what the Church of England said Separatists- people who separated from the Church and then from Puritans New England Colonies- Northeastern colonies- trade, ports, and manufacturing Middle Colonies- fertile land, known as breadbasket Southern Colonies- southeastern colonies- tobacco, cotton, and corn Cash crop- crops such as tobacco and cotton that make the most money for a colony

18 Beginning Your Journey: Read the top of your packet 1. Choose your SHIP size 2. Choose your LANDING spot 3. Determine WHEN you need to leave England 4. Choose a CAPTAIN

19 Captains Captain Jones overloads the cargo bay by adding 25 indentured servants thus slowing down the trip by 5 DAYS! Captain Smith is a SMUGGLER; adds 4 cases of rum to the manifest. This slows down the trip by 3 DAYS! Captain Bly has a well-armed crew able to defeat pirates if necessary. Add one CANNON.

24 Cargo Take 7 minutes to finish loading your ship! Water = 25 lbs! 1 lb. per person for belongings You must use ALL of your cargo weight! Log keeper- go back and HIGHLIGHT all of your choices (so you can t change them) When your ship is ready, have your passengers all on deck (sit on your desks)

25 Round 1 Before your voyage begins! Risk-takers: come draw a number and take it back to your ship! 1- The King has ordered your captain to court. You ve been delayed a WEEK! 2- Your captain is wealthy and has stocked your ship! Add extra AMMO and FOOD! 3- Your captain finds convicts on your boat! Remove 5 passengers and add 200 lbs. of food. 4- The King rewards your captain with an extra CANNON 5- A wealthy family pays their way onto your ship- it adds 8 people and slows you down a WEEK! 6- Your captain removes 10 people and adds 1 cannon. 7- Your captain adds 200 lbs. of ammo and it slows you down a week.
