Kenney Family RESEARCH REPORT OBJECTIVES Research the maternal line of Elizabeth Ann Wayman ( ) in an effort to identify the immigrant ancestor. KNOWN FACTS Immigrant relative is thought to be Tim Kenny, suspected father of Kate (Kenny) Wayman and maternal grandfather of Elizabeth Ann Wayman. Kate Kenny married Albert Marion Wayman (abt Feb 1927). They resided in Tyler County, WV from about 1900 until their deaths. SUMMARY Katherine Kenney was the daughter of Catherine Loftus and Kean Kenney, Irish immigrants who arrived in the United States in 1847 and 1848, respectively. They were most likely part of the wave of immigrants flocking to the United States for work during the famine that swept Ireland in the late 1840s. The couple married near Fairmont, Marion County, WV and moved by 1880 to Ohio County, WV and then settled in Sistersville, Tyler County, WV on 125 Cliff Street. They likely moved in conjunction with the work on the B&O Railroad during this period of time. They both died in Sistersville and are likely buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Wheeling, WV. Little information on Kean (spelling of first name uncertain) Kenney has been located. He possibly came from the province of Connaught in Ireland as many of the workers in the area of Marion County, WV known as Nuzum's Mills were from that province and were supporting work on the B&O Railroad. One Kean Kenney was identified arriving aboard the ship, John R. Skiddy in 1848 with a Peter and Mary Kenney who may have been siblings or close relatives; however, no additional information has been located to confirm that this is the same person as the Kean Kenney who seems to first appear in Marion County, WV marrying Catherine Loftus. The marriage record of Kean Kenney and Catherine Loftus states that his father's name was Patrick; however, no additional information to support that name has been located. Additionally, the name is questionable as there is no record of a child named Patrick in the Kean and Catherine Kenney household. Patronymic naming patterns, common with Irish families of the time, would indicate that the eldest son would have been named Patrick. Their eldest son was named Daniel, probably after Back To Your Roots, LLC 2

Catherine's father. This may indicate that the eldest son died at a very early age or the unlikely occurrence that Kean's father was named Daniel as well. Catherine Loftus was the daughter of Daniel Loftus and Ann Monahan or Monihan. She likely immigrated with the family around No immigration record for the family has been located; however, by 1848 they had settled in Berkeley County, WV. Catherine and another sibling do not appear with the family in the 1850 census indicating that they may have been living with another family member at the time. By 1853, the family relocated to the eastern district of Marion County, WV and Daniel was employed by the railroad. Daniel and Ann Loftus died in Fairmont and were buried at Holy Cross Cemetery. They were likely members of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Fairmont. Daniel Loftus was the son of Anthony and Bridget Loftus. Ann Monahan Loftus was the daughter of John and Catherine Monahan. No additional information was located on their parents and it is unlikely that they immigrated to the United States with Daniel, Ann, and their family. RESULTS This section provides the results of the research in an ascending family tree format. The numbers shown in each box correspond to the paragraph number discussing the individual and their family. 2.Kean C. Kenney (abt ) 4.Patrick (?) Kenney 1. Catherine Kenney ( ) 3. Ronald Wayman, born 23 December 1893 in Ohio County, WV, 7 died from diptheria on 29 June 1896 in Tyler County, WV. 8 ii. Regina "Jean" Ellen Wayman, born 13 April 1896 in Ohio County, WV. 9 She married Matthew John Dennis (29 Apr Jul 1923) 10 on 20 Sept 1921 in Wetzel County, WV. 11 She married William George Barnewold (24 Nov Jun 1980) 12 on 14 Feb 1927 in Wetzel County, WV. 13 iii. [Ann] Wayman, born 18 Nov 1899 in Tyler County, WV, 16 married John Brooks Cottle (22 Nov Aug 1967) 17 on10 Sept 1921 in Wetzel County, WV. 18 She died 13 Feb 1976 in Monongalia County, WV. 19 GENERATION TWO 2. Kean C. Kenney, born 22 Mar 1828 in Ireland, 20 married Catherine Loftus on 29 Oct 1855 in Fairmont, Marion County, WV. 21 He died 5 April 1919 in Sistersville, Tyler County, WV. 22 Kean Kenney immigrated to the United States about 1848 and reportedly became a naturalized citizen. 23 No record of his naturalization has been located. 3. Catherine Loftus, daughter of Daniel Loftus and Anna Monahan, was born June 1834 in Ireland 24 and died 3 Feb 1904 in Sistersville, Tyler County, WV. She was buried in Wheeling, Ohio County, WV at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. 25 Catherine immigrated about Kean and Catherine were likely Irish immigrants fleeing from the Irish Great Famine. Kean reportedly immigrated in A Kean Kenney is identified as immigrating to the U.S. aboard the John R. Skiddy. The ship departed from Liverpool and arrived in New York City on 27 September This Kean Kenney traveled in steerage and his occupation was recorded as a clerk. Kean Kenney in Fairmont, WV is consistently recorded in census records as a laborer raising some uncertainty that these are the same person. The age of the Skiddy's Kean Kenney (20 years) and date of arrival correspond to the Kean Kenney in West Virginia; however, additional information is needed to prove that this is the same person. Also aboard the Back To Your Roots, LLC 4

John R. Skiddy at this time were a Peter Kenney (b. abt 1826) and a Mary Kenney (b. abt 1827). These may have been siblings or other relatives of Kean Kenney and additional research to further identify them might provide evidence to support confirm the identity of this Kean Kenney. At the time of their marriage Kean lived at Benton's Ferry near Fairmont, WV. 28 He was likely part of the surge of Irish immigrants in Marion County at that time supporting the construction of the B&O Railroad and the mining in the area. Many employed at Benton's Ferry were from the Irish province of Connaught and many fights between men from different clans erupted. 29 Catherine likely immigrated with her parents and siblings around Catherine and Kean probably met in the Fairmont, WV area. Following their marriage, they may have lived for a short time with Catherine's parents in Fairmont. 30 But by 1860, they were living at Nuzum's Mills another location on the B&O Railroad in Marion County, WV. No record of them has been located in the 1870 census. 31 By 1880, the family relocated to Wheeling, Ohio County, WV. 32 From 1900 until their deaths, the Kinneys resided at 125 Cliff Street in Sistersville, Tyler County, WV, next door to their daughter and sonin-law Kate (Kenney) and Albert Wayman. 33 Kean and Catherine Kenney had 13 children with 12 living in They were as follows: i. Maria Jane Jennie (3 Sept Sept 1937) 35 married Patrick H. Gaffney (Mar Nov 1914) 36 on 27 Sept 1884 at St. Josephs Cathedral, Wheeling, WV. 37 ii. Kenney. 57 xii. John J. (15 Feb May 1947) was probably born near Grafton or Morgantown, WV 59 and died in Bradford, McKean, PA. 60 He married Mina Brown (2 Dec Dec 1941) 61 on 13 Sep 1905 in Summit County, OH. 62 xiii. Frederick Joseph (30 Mar Oct 1958) was born in West Virginia and died in Los Angeles, California. 63 GENERATION THREE 4. Patrick Kenney - The marriage register for Kean Kenney identifies Patrick Kenney as Kean Kenney's father. No other sources have been located with a father listed. Traditional Irish naming patterns raise doubts that Patrick was the name of Kean's father, as Kean's oldest male child would likely have been named Patrick. None of Kean and Catherine Kenney's children was named Patrick. It is possible that a first son was given this name and then died, but no records have been located to support this. 6. Daniel Loftus (abt June 1880) 64 was born in Ireland. 65 He was the son of Anthony Loftus and Bridget (last name unknown). He worked as a railroad hand. 66 He married Anna Monahan 67 probably around 1832 in Ireland, based on the birth date of their probable first child Catherine in He died in Fairmont, Marion County, WV and is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery, in Fairmont, Marion County, WV Anna Monahan (abt Jan 1872) was the daughter of John and Catherine Monahan. She was born in Ireland and died in January 1872 in Fairmont, Marion County, WV. She was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Fairmont, Marion County, WV. 69 Children of Daniel Loftus and Anna Monahan, were as follows: 3 i. Catherine ii. Annie (15 March Jul 1922) was born in Ireland. She died 4 Jul 1922 in Marion County, WV. She never married. 70 Back To Your Roots, LLC 6

iii. Anthony (abt ) was born in Ireland 71 and died in 1866 in Fairmont, WV. 72 He was registered for service in the Civil War with his occupation listed as railroad rireman, but it's unknown if he served in the war. 73 It is reported that he died from a fall in a coal mine. 74 iv. Ella ( ) 75 was born in Ireland. 76 She married Lawrence Horan (abt May 1911) 77 on 29 Feb 1876 in Marion County, WV. 78 They were both buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Fairmont, WV. 79 v. Nancy (abt ?) was born in Ireland. She was a twin to Breget [Bridget]. 80 vi. Breget [Bridget] (abt ?) was born in Ireland. She was a twin to Nancy. 81 vii. Margaret (18 Mar Jan 1923) was possibly born in Ireland, but more likely in the United States, as her father was reported in the 1848 personal property tax records in Berkeley County, WV. 82 If she was born in Ireland, then the family may have immigrated after Daniel. Margaret married John Flanagan on 5 Feb 1878 in Fairmont, Marion County, WV 83 and died in Logan County, WV. 84 GENERATION Anthony Loftus Bridget (last name unknown) 86 The children of Anthony Loftus and Bridget? were as follows: 6 i. Anthony 14. John Monahan/Monihan Anna (last name unknown). 88 The children of John Monahan and Anna? were as follows: 7 i. Ann Monahan Back To Your Roots, LLC 7

ADDITIONAL RESEARCH SUGGESTIONS Additional research is needed to try to determine if the Kean Kenney, with Peter and Mary, that immigrated aboard the John R Skiddy in 1848 is the same Kean Kenney that married Catherine Loftus. Research to try to locate Peter and Mary following their arrival in the United States might lead to additional information to confirm a relationship, origin in Ireland, and parents' names. Additional research in the personal property tax records and court order books of Marion County, WV should be done to determine when Kean Kenney arrived in Marion County and to try to locate a naturalization record. Kean Kenney's name is spelled a variety of ways in the records including Kerns, Keiran, and Kens. Kean seems to be the most often seen spelling and was used for this report. Similarly the name Kenney has a variety of spellings in the records and can lead to confusion, as there were a large number of Kenney and Kinney families in West Virginia. The middle initial 'C' appears often, sometimes the middle initial appears as 'E.' The 'C' may stand for a middle name of Clarence as the 1880 census shows the head of the household as Clarence Kenney. 89 Additional research can be done to try to locate Kean Kenney in 1850 utilizing all of these name variations and to identify him and other relatives that may have immigrated with him. In 1850, neither Catherine nor Ella Loftus appear in the household of Daniel Loftus in Berkeley, WV. 90 Additional research is needed to try to locate them as records indicate they immigrated around Locating them might provide links to other family members and information on their immigration and home in Ireland. Research into the Catholic Church records in Wheeling, WV and Fairmont, WV should be done to look for baptismal and other records involving the Loftus and Kenney families that might provide additional clues and information on the family. A request has been made of St. Peters Catholic Church in Fairmont, WV for any records related to the Loftus and Kinney family. Staff research on a time available basis, so results will hopefully be forthcoming. Research into parish records in Ireland in the area of County Mayo and the province of Connaught might lead to information on the families. Additional research is needed to try to identify the ship that Daniel Loftus and family immigrated on. Records consistently support an immigration date of 1847 which helps to identify the ship, although this was a time of Back To Your Roots, LLC 8

massive immigration and if they arrived at a smaller port, such as Baltimore, records for the family may be difficult to locate. Additional research should be done in the County of Mayo in Ireland related to the Loftus family to try to locate the parents of Daniel Loftus and marriage records for Daniel Loftus and Ann Monahan. Searches on FindmyPast.com, Ancestry.com, and FamilySearch.org have not identified any of the family members. In the 1910 census, James Kenney is shown living on 125 Cliff Street in Sistersville, WV with his daughter Edith Baker (or Baber) (age 40), a widow, and her son, Peter. Also in the household was his son Howard Kinney (age 42). James reportedly immigrated in 1870 and was a naturalized citizen. It is unclear if this James was really Kean and if Edith Baker was a daughter as reported or possibly another relative by marriage. Edith does not appear in any other records with Kean and the other siblings of Catherine Kinney. 91 Back To Your Roots, LLC 9
