1 BERRY, JOHN Deerfield, Hampshire County [1] JOHN BERRY was born in Ireland say [2] He died probably in Solon, Cortland County, New York, between 1820 and [3] John married MARGARET RISLEY, [4] who was born in Massachusetts supposedly about 1748, but more likely in the 1750s. She died after [5] John was a shoemaker at the Nook in Deerfield and is said to have been one of Burgoyne s men, but Sheldon wrote that this is doubtful. [6] On the other hand, many British prisoners of war did remain, some in Massachusetts. In 1798, John owned a house valued at $18.00 and 2.5 acres in Deerfield. [7] In 1800 he was enumerated in Deerfield with two males under 10, one 16 25, himself 26 44, three females under 10, one 10 15, one 26 44, and one 45 or over. [8] In 1810 in Deerfield, John had a male 10 15, one 16 25, one 26 44, himself 45 or over, a female under 10, one 15 25, and one 45 or over. [9] Although no deed for when John had acquired his land appears in any county record, on 31 October 1811, John and Margret sold two acres in Deerfield to Jonathan Hoyt 3rd. [10] U.S. Census, Deerfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, roll 4, p. 169, one male 16 or over, four males under 16, and three females U.S. Census, Deerfield, roll 15, p. 771 (age 26 44); 1810 U.S. Census, Deerfield, roll 19, p. 249 (age 45 or over); 1880 U.S. Census, Cincinnatus, Cortland County, New York, roll 822, E.D. 117, p. 11C (birthplace of father of John s daughter Charlotte Riddle); 1880 U.S. Census, Greene, Chenango County, New York, roll 818, E.D. 95, p. 103C (birthplace of father of John s son Richard Berry) U.S. Census, Solon, Cortland County, New York, roll 66, p He is not found in the 1830 census, but his wife was probably in Solon in her son-in-law Robert Riddle s household until 1850 (see below). 4 George Sheldon, A History of Deerfield, Massachusetts, 2 vols. (Deerfield, Mass.: E. A. Hall & Co., ), 2:81, which expresses her name as Margaret Bayley (?) ; New York, Town Clerks Registers of Men Who Served in the Civil War, ca , New York State Archives, Box 4, roll 2, p. 8, online at Ancestry.com, where the entry for Richard Dorin Berry, who enlisted in Barker, Broome County, names his parents as John [Berry] and Margaret Risley; New York, Civil War Muster Roll Abstracts, , online at Ancestry.com, as Richard D. Barry. 5 In 1850 Margaret is listed with her daughter Charlotte s family as age 102, with the note born 1748 (1850 U.S. Census, Taylor, Cortland County, roll 493, p. 188), and she was age 106 in the 1855 census (1855 New York State Census, Taylor, Cortland County, household 157). However, the birthdates of her children, especially Charlotte s in 1803, and the fact that with Charlotte s family in the 1830 and 1840 censuses is a female aged and respectively, suggest a birthdate in the 1750s (1830 U.S. Census, Solon, Cortland County, New York, roll 88, p. 8; 1840 U.S. Census, [no town listed], Cortland County, roll 275, p. 38). 6 Sheldon, History of Deerfield, 2:81. 7 Massachusetts and Maine 1798 Direct Tax, 18:670, database online at AmericanAncestors.org, U.S. Census, Deerfield, roll 15, p U.S. Census, Deerfield, roll 19, p Franklin County Deeds, 29:473.

2 2 John Berry of Deerfield, Hampshire County About 1815 the family removed to Solon, [11] where in 1820 John had a male and himself and a female 45 or over.
