Grade 9 Subject Choice Assignment Name: Grade: School:
Choosing the correct subjects in grade 9 is important because the subjects you choose will decide the courses you can apply for after school. What does this mean well, for a start it means that you don t have to decide now what career you want to do, It also means that you just need to get an idea of the type of careers or career fields that interest you! To do this you should first do the PACE career guidance questionnaire. It shouldn t take too long let s say about 20 minutes. Go to your school website and click on the career guidance link. You will see a page that looks similar to the one below except it will have your school name and emblem on it:
When you are on this page click on the link that says QUESTIONNAIRE. Select the questionnaire that says Career Exploration Programme - Interest Questionnaire. This questionnaire will take you about 20 minutes to complete and at the end you will get a graph that looks like this. The graph will show you the group of careers that you are most likely to enjoy doing. A group of careers is called a Career Field In the table below write down your three highest Career Fields (REMEMBER: if you have the same score for more than one of your highest career fields you can choose for yourself which ones you want to write down), and also write down three careers that you think you might like to do for each career field.
The 3 Career Fields you like List 3 Careers you like in each career field Nearly Done two more steps!! Now you know (more or less) the type of career fields and careers that interest you. Let s see what subjects you need to take to keep these career options (and others) open to you. Click on Questionnaire then click on SubjectChooser.
Now remember these rules Yes; choosing subjects also has rules. Why? ;.. because you want to keep as many options open for yourself as possible and the more rules you follow the more options you will keep open for yourself! Rule 1: Choose at least 7 subjects (make that 6 because Life orientation is compulsory. So Rule 1 is to choose 6 subjects PLUS Life Orientation Rule 2: You must have 2 languages (English and Afrikaans or English and 1 other South African language or Afrikaans and 1 other South African language. Rule 3: You must choose either Maths or Maths Lit (Remember: Maths keeps open more career options but if you are not good at Maths rather choose Maths lit because a poor Maths mark can pull down your whole average in grade 12 and this will affect your final APS score! If you like you can hedge your bets and start by taking Maths and see how it goes in grade 10. Rule 4: You must now choose 3 more subjects (REMEMBER: you can choose more than 3 if you like but don t put yourself under unnecessary pressure when you are in matric). These 3 subjects that you are now choosing are called your Elective Subjects. One of these subjects must be a DESIGNATED subject. In the SubjectChooser the designated subjects have a green line ( ) next to them. In other words choose at least 1 subject with a green line next to it!!
TOP TIP.. It is important to like the subjects that you are choosing!! Designated subject (has green line) Not a Designated subject (no green line) At least 1 of your elective subjects must have a green line next to it Check this out when you are on the SubjectChooser. The yellow i will tell you more about what the subject is about. Change between Maths and Maths lit and see the impact on career options. If a career has a red line through it like this doctor it means that your subject choice will not let you do that career. Click on a career to get more information. Change the careers that you see by clicking on a career field like this.
Did You Know.. Click this to change this Nearly Done..last step...check & Complete..
Check that your subjects in the SubjectChooser lets you do careers from your preferred Career Fields in the questionnaire Career Field (Click on the career field to get career information)
Subject Choice Complete the subject choice sheet below and hand this is to your LO teacher. Name: School: Surname: Grade: 1. Home language (compulsory) 2. Second language (compulsory) 3. Life Orientation (compulsory) 4. Mathematics or Maths Literacy ELECTIVES (optional) 9. (optional) My subject choice allows me entry into my career fields Yes No This subject combination lets me do a degree (if I want to) Yes No Parent / Guardian Signature Pupil Signature
REMEMBER.... If you are still uncertain.. Why not join one of our FREE Subject Choice Webinars.. How?? On your School Career Guidance site, click on Webinars and register to attend. And what s more?. If you need us to run a special webinar because you missed the last one then just us on info@pace.za.com and ask us. We like to HELP!!
