2 Letter Writing Notes for Instructor -Draw a large rectangle on the board, representing the sheet of paper a letter is on. Explain that the address for the person you are writing goes at the top of the paper. Write an example address on the board. Make sure students are following along. -Below that is the date. Specifically mention that abbreviations are not acceptable because this is a formal letter. -Next is the salutation or greeting. -The body of the letter follows. Explain that the entire letter is left-justified with spaces between paragraphs. Make sure everyone is following along. -After that is the closer. Again, emphasize that because of the tone, you do not end with Love, Suzy or Your pal, The Suzemeister but Sincerely, Susan Smith, followed by your position, if you writing -After that, you leave a 4 line space for you signature and then your address. -Note that there are a few variations on the format of business letters, but this is the one that we will be using and that the priority is just using one of the few acceptable formats.

When I bought the car from you, I expected you would live up to your word. I did not expect that you would leave me stranded in Hartford Connecticut! The Toyota dealer in Hartford says that the problem was your fault and I exspect that you will make good on this. You owe me $1,004 for my aggravation and fixing the car. When I spoke to Andy, he said that there wasn t a snowball s chance in hell that you would pay me for the repair to the car. Is this what your word means? The warranty said that you would pay for problems and that is why I purchased it. The mechenic who fixed it said that everybody knows that steam cleaning can cause this type of problem and that Never a Lemon is just lazy and that is why you steam clean the engines. If you do not pay me within three days I will sue in court! I will NEVER buy a car from you again and I will tell all of my friends not to buy from you. Send my check to me immediately! 5 Smith Enterprises Letter # Ridiculous Drive Planet X October 14, 2012 Dear Mr. Smith, As a resident of the Anytown, I would like to bring to your attention a couple issues that have been bothering me. In order for me to obtain food, and when I say food I mean actual food, not McDonald s/ I have to go to Safeway. It s nice that we have Bountiful Baskets, but recently I have been reading in the news about places all over the world who are taking matters into their own hands in ways that benefit every demographic in the community. Canada has its own Office of Urban Agriculture, whereas all we have is a few local nonprofits. In the Netherlands, they recently held a global summit on METROPOLITAN AGRICULTURE. Philidelphia recently conducted a GIS survey to find out how much potential land there was inside of the city to begin serious urban food production. Even Michelle Obama started an organic vegetable garden on the White House lawn, and has recently sponsored the American Community Garden Association, whose website is currently building a database of community gardens all over America, which you can already use by entering in your zipcode to see where your nearest community garden is located. With no sure way to tell whether or not the world economy, national economy, or local economy will recover at any satisfying rate any time soon, there seems to be no reason to me that we cannot start growing food, literally everywhere. Many cities in the world have professionally designed rooftop gardens. Some architects in Japan, Germany and here in America are designing what are called living buildings, which are at maximum efficiency. I am excited about the prospect of growing more food in the [important area], because it will benefit literally everyone and everything. Thank you for hearing my concerns.
