: In order to get contacted for an interview my client is going to need to prove his knowledge of digital communications, plus show that he is talented and creative. He will also need to show that he has computer skills and it would be helpful to show that he is talented in more than one are. Diversity always looks good. The best way to do all of this is through a portfolio. As a graphic designer the portfolio itself should be creative. This will grab your audienceʼs attention. It will also showcase your talent before they even begin to explore the site. It is also a good display of your diversity by showing them you have the ability to design a good website. The client is also going to need solid content in addition to his creative website. The client will need good designs that show his creativeness as well as his talent with certain programs like Adobe Photoshop and InDesign. The client is also going to need to prove their knowledge and experience in the field of graphic design. Good ways to do this could be through jobs that you have held. Since the client is a student and probably does not have much real world experience another good option are classes. The client good include some information about classes that he has taken that are related to the field. This will help prove to your audience that you do actually have some of the knowledge you are claiming.

The last thing I would say the client needs in their portfolio is a way to bring out a little bit of their personality. Although the majority of what plays into getting an interview is talent and knowledge, the audience may also take into account whether the client will fit into their environment. It would be good to show that you are appealing in more ways than just talent. Media Rationale: The media of choice for a graphic design portfolio is a website. A website is the easiest way to display your creative abilities. It makes it easy to lay out all your work for others to see, and the website itself becomes one of your works. Also, many design jobs ask for some sort of experience working with web. Your portfolio being a web page could be a good example of your abilities. Another good thing about a web page is that it is relatively cheap, as low as $5.75 a month, and easily accessible. It is easy to send to businesses you are interested in, not to mention you do not have to pay for postage. Also, it is possible for other people to find your page without any effort from you. SWOT Analysis: Strengths: You have a couple of strengths that will help you with this internship. Your biggest strength is the fact that you have experience with all the main design programs which is all the job add really asks for. With digital communications you also have a major that embodies many different skills. You are not strictly an artist and having more then one talent always looks good. Also, not only are you qualified for the job but you

have a personal interest in common with the people who work at AGV. That can help out if it comes down to the wire. Weaknesses: As far as this job add goes you do not have very many weaknesses. Your biggest weakness is that you do not really have any experience in the field, outside of the classroom. You are also lacking evidence of any kind of leadership. The job add says that it is ideal for a college student or recent grad though so these weaknesses are pretty minor. Opportunity: Being a Digital Communications major is an opportunity in itself. This degree gives you the opportunity to enter a growing field. A field that is really going to take off over the next few years. Getting a degree from such an academically focused school like Lebanon Valley is also a good opportunity. With this internship you will have the opportunity to gain some real world experience in your field. With the skills your major has given you, you also have the opportunity to make a very unique website for your portfolio. Threat: The threats for this internship are not as many since it is focused on a college student. You do not have to worry about more experienced people coming for your job. The main threat for you is other kids coming out of design specific schools. There could be kids out there with more specific degrees that fit what the company is looking for a little better in a more artistic job like this. Goals/Objectives Statement:

Upon viewing the portfolio the audience will be able to see what you have to offer and by the skills and abilities that you have displayed in your portfolio. They will be laid out in a way that attracts your audiences attention so they will look around your site. This will give them a better idea of what you have to offer the company. The primary audience for my client are companies looking to hire a graphic design intern. It could be a graphic design firm but most likely my client will end up with an ad or marketing company. The portfolio should be easy to skim since the primary audience most likely has a lot of applicants to get through and they wont want to spent a lot of time on each one. They will look for a few key things that should be included in the portfolio. They will look for things like if you meet their requirements, if you have good knowledge of the graphic design field, and if you are currently studying anything to further your abilities. The objective of the clientʼs portfolio is to have potential employers offer you an interview after reviewing the portfolio. The client will be offered an interview 10% of the time.

Transmittal Memo To: Douggie Fresh From: Mike Hull Subject: Date: September 24, 2010 The purpose of this report is to provide the client with an assessment of his needs. The following document will provide the client with an in depth understanding of what he needs to do in order to get an interview. This will also show the client what the project needs to meet what his audience is looking for. This report consists of four parts. It will include the client needs analysis which is mentioned above. There will be a goals and objectives statement include to go over what exactly it is we want this project to do for you. There is also a SWOT analysis to go over your strengths and weaknesses to see how to go about selling yourself. Lastly we have include a media rationale to go over what media we think is the best choice for your portfolio and why we believe this. Sincerely, Michael Hull
