1 SSS TRIO TRIBUNE A Letter From the Director Dear SSS scholars, April 2017 Student Support Services Newsletter Spotlight Spring should be here any minute! This means that the end of the semester is rapidly approaching. For 18 members of our SSS family, we are saying so long, we Senior Issue: Celebrating our Graduating SSS Seniors wish you well, and please keep in touch with us. We want to know what you are doing and where you land because you are an inspiration to other students, so please keep in touch with us. This issue of TRIO Tribune is dedicated to our grads. Commencement is Saturday, May 13 at 2:00 p.m. at the La Crosse Center. Everyone is invited to attend; no tickets are needed. If you are staying in town to attend and are not graduating, I am looking for students to serve as greeters (along with me) at the front door of the La Crosse Center to escort families to their seats. Please let me know if you are interested in helping out. Congratulations to our new TRIO/SSS peer coaches for : Zaria Beyer, Caitlin Fallon, Jaz Ginter, Aubry Kujawa, Jolene Lansin, Samantha Merkel, Brenna Meyer, Kelsi Rufenacht and Lexi Vertein. We welcome back 2 returning coaches: Danielle Ducklow and Katlyn Grondin. We also say farewell to Jennalee Oefstedahl, our grad assistant. She has been a wonderful addition to the ARC group. We will miss her and wish her well as she continues in her Master s in Mental Health graduate program. Happy end of the semester, everyone! Jane Eddy, Director Q & A with SSS Seniors Amber Pedersen A: Courtyard Carni! A: The people I met. A: Academic advice and borrowing me a scientific calculator for statistics. A: My nursing career!

2 Brianna Bartolerio A: I recommend that every student should take the Franciscan Servant Leadership class to go on the Italy pilgrimage! I loved experiencing Rome and Assisi! A: I will remember the importance of self-care, so I can provide the best quality holistic family-centered care that I can. A: SSS provided me with great information on scholarships and grants, which was wonderful to have since I was the first generation in my family to attend a four-year university! A: I am hoping to be a NICU or labor and delivery nurse! I am interested in working in Colorado and Madison! Who knows what other places/states will be added to the list as graduation and NCLEX get closer? I am excited to see where the journey of life will take me! Caitlin Anderson (Educational Studies) A: Take every opportunity to get involved in clubs and social events. It's an easy way to make friends. A: When I look back in 5 years, I will remember the education I got here. Everyone is so nice and helpful. A: The benefit of being in SSS/TRIO program is having someone there for extra support. A: I am excited to graduate after being at Viterbo for 6 years! I plan on applying for paraprofessional jobs and working full time. Dana Swope (Dietetics) A: I think Viterbo has a wonderful undergraduate research program. I would highly recommend getting involved with it right away. It is a great resume builder, and you are more prepared for your coursework. A: I will remember the great people I met and the support I received. Viterbo is a welcoming community. The professors also push you to be the best. A: The extra support was beneficial. A: I am hoping to pursue a career in Florida. I have also contemplated grad school.

3 Justice Carson (Psychology) A: I think that every student should have the experience of getting to know at least one Viterbo faculty member of his or her anticipated career. College life has a lot of difficult challenges and rewards, and being able to have a mentor who has been there and done that has been so nice to have during my college experience. A: When I look back in 5 years, the things that I will most remember are the relationships I ve made at Viterbo. I have met so many amazing people during my time at Viterbo whom I will continue to maintain close relationships with even after I walk the stage. There are several members of the Viterbo community who have gone above and beyond to help me achieve my degree, which is something I will never forget. A: The benefit of the SSS/TRIO program that really made a difference to me was the financial assistance for events that were beneficial to my college experiences, such as the Career Service s Etiquette Dinner cost. Although these costs may seem very feasible for some students, these same expenses can be difficult to find for others. When SSS/ TRIO provides resources like these, it helps to give students access to experiences they may not have had otherwise. A: After graduation, I plan to have landed employment for an organization that allows me to utilize the skills and experiences that I have learned during my college career. I also plan to move back to my hometown and attend graduate school next year. Mallory Gehrmann (Social Work) A: I recommend that every student experience the life of living in the dorms and on campus for a year or two. I also recommend that every student take advantage of receiving academic help from the ARC. You may not feel you need it or think you re not cool if you get help; however, by receiving the help I did, I was able to be successful in college. I also was able to create some great relationships with some professors and faculty at Viterbo. I would highly recommend getting involved on campus! You will create friendships that will last you a lifetime. A: From my time here at Viterbo, I will remember the friendships and the crazy memories I have created with them the most. A: What benefitted me the most about being in the SSS/TRIO program was the extra support I received. Receiving that extra support helped me to be successful and even on the Dean s List. A: I have recently been accepted into graduate school, so I am excited to pursue my education in social work. I am hoping this way I can give back to the community.

4 Paul Kasten (Marketing) A: Take trips when available. A: The relationships I formed with my professors. A: The benefit of having someone to talk to with whatever issues I may have. A: Obtaining a career in a marketing oriented field, possibly in a bigger city. Samantha Semanko (Elementary Education) A: I think that every student should go on a study abroad or service trip at some point during his or her time at Viterbo. A: I will remember the great friends I made here and the teachers who really cared about me. A: I really enjoyed getting discounted tickets for events at the FAC so I could go see the Platinum Edition shows without paying too much. A: I am pursuing a career as an educator, either in an elementary or middle school. I would also like to coach basketball or softball.

6 Messages From Advisors It has been a joy to watch you grow from your freshmen days to your senior year. Congratulations! Judy Ulland It is with mixed emotions that I extend my congratulations on your graduation; I m very excited to celebrate this important accomplishment with you, and yet I ll miss working with those of you I ve had as SSS advisees and had the pleasure of getting to know. Please stay in touch, and blessings to you all! Melissa Growt It has been a pleasure getting to know you all, and watching you progress through Viterbo. It s always fun hearing about your adventures throughout the years. Good luck in all your future endeavors! Beth Gaedy Congratulations, SSS graduates.
