1 Theresa B. Madison Mt. Carmel Elem. School Math Pro Art Education Lesson Plan Building and renting a three-dimensional house using a net and a checkbook. Math Standards Standard 2.2 Computation and Estimation Apply addition and subtraction in everyday situations using concrete objects, I. Select a method for computations and explain why it is appropriate. Standard B Select and use standard tools to measure the size of figures with specified accuracy, including length, width, perimeter and area E Add and Subtract Measurements, C Estimate, refine and verify specified measurements of objects. Standard E Select, use and justify the methods, materials and strategies used to solve problems., 2.5.5F Use appropriate problem-solving strategies. Standard A Give formal definitions of geometric figures D Describe in words how geometric shapes are constructed E Construct two and three dimensional shapes and figures using manipulatives F Find familiar solids in the environment and describe them. Materials List: Day 1: Two cardboard boxes of different sizes and proportions, preferably with folding tabs for lids, pencils, rulers, heavy drawing paper, masking tape, scissors Day 2-3: 3D forms especially prisms, drawing paper, pencils, rulers scissors, 24x36 inch oattag/posterboard paper, house style outline sketches and house photographs, colored pencils or markers, masking tape, optional embellishment texture/architecture rubbing plates found in Sax Art Supply Catalogs. Day 4-5: construction paper, tape, glue, rulers, scissors, (see samples - - of checkbook ledger page, checks, cards with rental amounts for locationcity, state, (a map) to identify their house locations, calculators and selfevaluation tickets Objectives and goals of the lesson: 1. Phase 1:The students will develop and understand a net. A net is a two dimensional pattern that can be folded into a Jacket to cover a three dimensional figure. a. The students will have an active discussion of the characteristics/attributes of a 3D cardboard box. They will develop T. Madison Net House lesson 1 of 11
2 vocabulary, writing a list of terms on the board. (Face, edge, corner, congruent sides, 2D, 3D, horizontal edge, vertical edge, etc.) b. They will be shown what the box looks like when unfolded, describing the different elements and shapes and how they transform when opened flat. Angles and edges now become fold lines, etc. c. The students will make a sketch of another box guessing the net and its possible answer(s). d. The students will cut, fold and assemble their net, with scissors and masking tape. They will identify the characteristics of each box. They will make comparisons in scale and characteristics -- Tall, short, horizontal, vertical, rectangle, square, rectangular prism, square prism (cube), are all the sides evenly matched in height and width, opposite sides matching in dimensions, etc. Noting any assembling problems. 2. Phase 2 Building the house: making a model a. The students will look at historical house styles and make comparisons on the generalized shapes constructed in each style. b. The students will decide on the dimensions and perimeter for their house. If time allows they will develop a floor plan and rooms inside or save as an idea for another lesson. The students will draw a net of their house creating a rectangular prism, a triangular prism will be added for the roof and gable ends. Modification: a shape template could be used for assisting slower learning students or anyone having difficulty. The shapes could be used as a tracer. c. Each student will begin sketch of the base, working to the faces of the prism. Before the net is assembled or made standing 3D, the students will add architectural elements brick, stone, siding, windows and doors with markers and rulers. Identifying pattern in these man-made textures/elements. If additional review needs to be made - the students will trace a 3D form, rotating to find the possible net solutions and variations. d. A second triangular prism or rectangular prism needs to be made constructing the roof line of the house. Again the students will add building elements such as shingles, board lines etc. T. Madison Net House lesson 2 of 11
3 e. Assemble the two now 3D shapes. Students should add any other architectural elements they feel will be an asset to their home, i.e. porches, desks, turrets, columns etc. 3. Phase 3- Each student will be randomly given a card with the rental amount of their house and location. Each student will be given a checkbook ledger and 3 checks. They will each be given $5,000 to spend on their renting. a. All the students will rent 3 homes, writing checks to the owners and keeping track in their ledger. They must note the location of their rented properties. b. No one may rent their home more than 4 times. After the papers are distributed the students will be taught how to balance a ledger deposits and withdrawals. c. Before the students begin, put the houses on display with rental location and amount. When a student rents the property, they will leave their check with it. Other students will then be able to see how many times the properties have been rented. Any check written needs to be written in the ledger as a withdrawal. d. At the end of the activity, the checks are collected by the houses owner and the amounts are added to their ledger as a deposit. e. At the close of this activity the students will be taught how to balance a ledger. Recommend using a overhead or diagram on the chalkboard for demonstration. 4. After completing the closing activities the students will fill out the self-evaluation form. T. Madison Net House lesson 3 of 11
