PCI Update on Transportation Activities and elearning Modules for AASHTO Technical Committee T-4 AASHTO SCOBS --- Spokane Washington June 2017 William N. Nickas, P.E. Managing Director, Transportation Services Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute Chicago, IL.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES 1. Cover a few Transportation Publications. These include Manuals, Recommended Practices and State-of-the-Art reports 2. FHWA-AASHTO-PCI contract for advancing complex concrete initiatives. 3. New Contract for Concrete Anchor Implementation 4. Recent Case History of Game Changing accomplishments
Transportation Publications. These include Manuals, Recommended Practices and Stateof-the-Art reports
Manual for Evaluation and Repair Organized to address: Root Cause and Solutions May be adopted by some plants as part of QSM Offers Trouble shooting, Repair and Injection processes Released in 2006 release Being updated
Precast, Prestressed Concrete Piles Excel Workbook addresses: Pile lofting multi point picking and handling Design Interaction Diagrams Sample Parallel Calculations and User Guidance Pile Recommended Practices: Originally released in 1993 Being updated Become a National Standard
Recommended Practice for Stability Understand the various stages in the life of a girder Understand root causes of lateral instability and the need for analysis. Understanding of the concept of roll axis and variety of support conditions. Identify the equilibrium conditions for supported girder. Case studies of knowledge gained calculation and modification to improve stability.
This addresses a growing need by everyone As each of you are seeing more long girders, Today your agency leads the way with the deployment of these recommended practices. FHWA has a new NHI Class no titled Engineering for Structural Stability in Bridge Construction and this is 75% steel with 25% concrete. This new PCI document and the Excel conversion effort underway
FHWA-AASHTO-PCI contract for advancing complex concrete initiatives.

New Contract for Concrete Anchor Implementation
Implementation of Concrete Anchors PCI contracting with TRB Purpose: Accelerate implementation of the new LRFD section for concrete anchor design and minimize State Highway Agency (SHA) overlapping efforts in implementation through the use of a deployment kit for nationwide implementation. NCHRP 639: Adhesive Anchors in Concrete Under Sustained Load (exploratory report 67 pages plus references) NCHRP 757: Long Term Performance of Epoxy Adhesive Anchor Systems
Implementation of Concrete Anchors PCI contracting with TRB Results of the project to date: The project to date has focused on adhesive anchors. With the adoption of the eighth edition AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, Section 5.13, Anchors, is noted as being applicable to headed studs, headed bolts, certain hooked bolts, adhesive anchors, post installed expansion anchors and post installed undercut anchors. The design specification references ACI , ACI 355.2, and ACI These ACI documents cover structural design of anchors and qualification testing for mechanical and adhesive anchors. It is probable that many design, materials, construction engineers in state DOTs and the transportation industry may not be familiar with these ACI documents or the proper application of these documents and other related documents for design, specification, procurement, or inspection of the various anchor types.
Implementation of Concrete Anchors PCI contracting with TRB Test reports ICC ES ESRs or ACI or ACI information Anchor is graded on performance Anchor categories Product qualification standards ACI (AC193) Mechanical expansion anchor qualification Concrete screw anchor qualification Report of design requirements ACI (AC308) Adhesive anchor qualification Report of design requirements A State Highway Agency does not need to repeat the ICC ES AC (ACI) testing protocol for anchor qualification
Implementation of Concrete Anchors PCI contracting with TRB PCI-AASHTO Bridge Engineers Draft of One-day Seminar on Anchoring to Concrete/Masonry General Outline 1. Scope and objectives of seminar 2. General background on anchor behavior 3. Available codes 4. Available design software 5. Anchorage selection process 6. Product qualifications, specifying anchors for a project, and anchor procurement 7. Adhesive anchor installer and installer inspector certification 8. Construction compliance testing Knapsack Material Items that will be given to each participant after the class Leave workshop with a model Agency Implementation Plan and toolkit Two Pilots and then ready for broad dissemination 12 months from contract execution.
