I measure the year in new skills and experiences, rather than months or seasons. I learn new software as a hobby and nothing feels better than coming up with a beautiful solution to a frustrating problem. Being the wall ideas are bounced off of is where I excel. I am very good with noticing patterns and connections within a project and when new ideas are put forth, I can list off how the new proposal will ripple through the project. Working with others to come up with and evaluate solutions has yet to get boring for me, and I hope it never does.

4 Lloyd Lewis House Libertyville, IL concept Restoration and modernization of a 1940s Frank Lloyd Wright house. creation A Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian that was falling into disrepair and only had wall-unit air conditioning units added to combat the summer heat and humidity. The first phase of the project was geared toward taking care of the immediate issues facing the home, such as ensuring all the exterior doors and windows were operable and closing gaps in the exterior walls. The second phase focuses on updating the home to the 21st century by modernizing the kitchen, adding a forced air system, and restoring the bathrooms. I was responsible for measurement and documentation of the existing conditions, construction drawings, and working with the client and consultants. Much of the casework that originally existed on the ground floor had been disassembled and I worked with the contractor and owner to determine the original design. 6 Taif University Masterplan Taif, Saudi Arabia concept Masterplan that would create a more walkable campus that could expand with the student population. creation The master plan used wadi, or dry riverbeds, to connect the different areas of the campus. The buildings were oriented to the sun to improve their efficiency and squared off to reduce construction costs from the previous plan. I worked on area calculations for phasing, presentation plans, and renderings of both the entire master plan and sample buildings. 8 Anshe Emet Synagogue Chicago, IL concept Renovation of sanctuary and an addition containing a new chapel, gym, and offices. creation It began as an award competition to redesign the sanctuary space and progressed into a master plan for the future of the synagogue. Creating presentation drawings and renderings for the master plan. I worked on the new seating and office layouts to fit in as many as possible. The new sanctuary and chapel needed to accommodate the growing congregation and adjust to accommodate the even larger crowds that come on the High Holidays. 10 Senior Housing and Library Chicago, IL concept Schematic design for a new development containing senior housing over a library. creation Multiple iterations, including a site change, for a new development model of senior housing over a public library. The final design included a 14,000 sq.ft. library, a second floor terrace for the residents, 64 units, a community room, and a fitness room. 12 Balbach Condominiums San Jose, CA concept Condominium project to liven up the convention center area in downtown San Jose. creation 4 story wood construction with a garage below grade. 101 units with a cafe on the first floor and many other common spaces spread throughout the building. The unit spread favors 1 bedroom units to appeal to younger urban singles or couples. As Job Captain on the design team for this project I was responsible for the daily coordinating with consultants and resolving design issues that came up. For example, with the need for a larger garage in order to accommodate the parking requirements for the units and cafe above the underground garage extends roughly 15-0 out from the front of the building creating a the need for a post tensioned slab with a 2-0 step. The step needed to be worked out with structural consultants, civil consultants, plumbing consultants and the design team to ensure that there was ADA clearance, room for utilities to enter the building and that the slab would be able to support the building. 14 Alexis Condominiums Santa Clara, CA concept Condominium project along one of the major streets in the South Bay area. creation 3 story wood construction with an open-air parking lot on grade. 60 units surrounding a courtyard with amenities including a playground and a fitness room. The unit spread favors 2 and 3 bedroom units to appeal to families moving into the area. This project was fast-tracked through the city permitting process and included a bike path along the Saratoga Creek, which borders the property to the west. I worked on the unit design and construction drawings for the different permits. The residential units sit on a podium which was part of the foundation permit and required an addendum after the units were redesigned.
