1 June Rate $300 - Intermediate June 14-15, Instructor: Gary Humphreys 19 Cary Lane Salem, NY info@salemartworks.org 2014 Workshop List Glass 101 This 3-day workshop will focus on the basic principles of glass blowing. Each weekend the class will concentrate on a particular aspect such as blowing bubbles, vessel making, or color application. Students will be led through a series of demonstrations of tools and techniques to help them understand the principles of glass blowing and glass sculpture. The class, as a group will then try out the techniques. Each student will have the chance to work oneon-one with an instructor, creating a finished piece to take home. Welding 1: Beginners Welding This 2-day beginners workshop students will spend the first day being introduced to oxyacetylene welding, heating and bending. For the purpose of expediency MIG welding will be the primary focus but workshops can be customized. Students will be led through health and safety instruction and then will practice the basic techniques on scrap metal provided. With these skills, students will spend the second day constructing a metal piece of their own creation. June Rate $450 Level: Intermediate - Advanced June Instructor: Liz Peltekian - Intermediate June Instructor: Ron Bakerian Neon Sketchbook Glass Blowing and Neon Fusing 4-Day Workshop This new 4-day glass and neon workshop will focus on electrifying handblown glass with noble gases. Through class discussion, slide shows, research and practice, students will gain an understanding of the multi-step process to make an electrified work of art. This workshop will teach the neon process, experimentation, and conceptual development. There will be skilled instructors to help make hand-blown pieces if needed. denim long pants. Students are encouraged to bring their sketchbook, drawings, a lot of energy and patience. Stained Glass, Copper-Foil Method This 3-day workshop will focus on the formal techniques of the copper-foil method of stained glass. Through demonstrations and personal feedback, students will learn how to design their piece, precision glass cutting, foiling, soldering, and finishing techniques. Each student will have the opportunity to design a piece to take home at the end of the workshop. Students are encouraged to bring sketches of their ideas, pictures and inspirations for their designs. Additional fees for glass may apply. Introduction to Blacksmithing This 2-day workshop students will learn skills and techniques of traditional and modern iron working as well as the equipment, safety, and tools used. On day one, participants will gain a basic understanding of blacksmithing by designing and forging a pair of functional tongs. On day two, students will use the tools they have created to complete a small project of their own design.

Level: Emerging and established fiction writers working on novels Contraptions, Exploration into Glass Manipulation 5-Day Workshop This 5-day workshop will focus on the creation of tools and devices to manipulate molten glass. Using a combination of found objects, fabricated parts, and a variety of different materials students will learn to make a blow mold. Students will explore shapes and textures, as well as the different techniques required to use their devices. Time will be spent between the wood shop, welding bay and glass studios. Glass blowing experience is helpful, but not necessary. denim long pants. Students are encouraged to bring along some interesting objects, a sketchbook and an open mind. Sketching & Painting the Outdoor Landscape This 3-day workshop will focus on the unique experience of painting en plein air. Students will spend time making quick sketches of the light and landscapes, then work from both observation and from sketchbooks to create more ambitious paintings of the plein-air landscape. Students will learn the particular skills and techniques needed to make plein-air paintings successful. This class is meant for those with at least a bit of experience with watercolor and some basic drawing skills as well. Novel Outlining and Chapter Drafting 2-Week Residency A two-week residency for emerging and established fiction writers working on novels (at whatever stage of the process): Week one is devoted to sketching a chapter-by-chapter breakdown of your novel with the help of another writer; week two, to drafting at least one chapter and/or continuing the outlining process. Readings are voluntary. Completing new chapters will be encouraged, especially for those who have already begun drafting their books. Submission required: Please bio that includes publications, as well as five to ten pages of a short story or novel to a.smithduncan@gmail.com and tessastn@ gmail.com. May 31 Deadline; applicants will be notified of acceptance by June 15 July Instructor: Elizabeth Coyne Rate $185 Age: 14 + * July Instructor: Chase Winkler Age: 14+* Painting as Metaphor This 3-day workshop will focus on using metaphors as inspiration for creating abstract oil paintings. Students will approach the idea of creating paintings that map out the landscape of the mind by investigating and examining the notion of constructing a painting like a collage or narrative. Through discussion, students will incorporate imagery to create running metaphors within each painting. Students are encouraged to bring a collection of objects, photos, poems, and writing. Each student will receive a basic oil-painting material supply list to bring to the class. Silk-Screen Workshop This 2-day workshop will focus on an overview of basic methods and techniques used in screen printing. Students will create bold, graphic images based on pictures, sketches and photos they bring along with them. Students have the potential to walk away from this workshop with a large series of prints. Usable materials include heavyweight paper, cotton shirts, canvas rag, linen, etc. Note: Do not bring fuzzy materials or nylon.
3 July 12th, 19th, 26th, and August 2nd 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Instructor: Bonnie J. Ross Rate $ $100, Level: all levels of motivated writers are welcome. Ages 18+ July Instructor: Gary Humphreys Level: Intermediate - Advanced Thoughts into Words, creative writing workshop Four Saturdays, This workshop will focus on encouraging each participant s emergent writer s voice though a series of engaging writing activities; sensory-sharpening hikes and field trips; free writing time in and around the campus; sharing and critiquing sessions; and optional individual portfolio reviews. Participants will explore critical facets of writing by considering topics including a writer s voice/a reader s ear; understanding the role emotional and human characters play in a piece s evolution; and creating a physical, sensory and emotional geography in their writings. Welding 2: Advanced Welding Building Sculptures with Found Objects This 2-day workshop is offered to students who have some welding experience and wish to learn more in-depth techniques and incorporating other materials in creating sculpture. Students will have access to oxy-acetylene for cutting and bending, MIG welders, and finishing tools as well as materials. August 4-8 Instructor: Craig Usher Rate $550 Level: Intermediate August 8-10 Instructor: Elizabeth Coyne August Instructor: Kay Christy - Intermediate August Instructor: Chase Winkler Figurative Impulse Clay and Metal 5-Day Workshop This new 5-day workshop will focus on fabricating steel figures. Students will explore the figure by drawing and making small sculptures from models. Then, students will introduce basic metal working techniques like welding or forging into their figurative work to create steel sculptures based on their studies. Time will be divided between clay modeling, drawing, and the welding bay. Experience with drawing and modeling from the figure, as well as welding and forging is helpful, but not necessary. denim long pants. Students are encouraged to bring along their sketchbooks and drawing supplies. The Art of Handmade Paper 3-Day This 3-day workshop will focus on basic paper making techniques. Each student will make his or her own papermaking mold and will experiment with repurposing paper and old books to create new sheets of paper. Students will also have the opportunity to learn fiber preparation, pigmenting pulp, forming techniques, and embedding flat objects into the paper s surface. Polymer Bead Making Learn the art and technique of millefiori cane building using polymer clays to make unique beads. This age-old technique was originally used in a hotglass process called caning for creating design and pattern most notably recognized in the Venetian glass-making tradition. Using a similar approach, the process has been adapted for use with polymer clays to create patterns and design for use in jewelry and small-object making. This modeling medium hardens at low temperature in a standard oven and can be formed with simple tools, making it not only versatile but accessible. Silk-Screen Workshop Incorporating Used Books This 2-day silk screen workshop has an emphasis on printing with paper, using found text and images from books. This workshop is scheduled between papermaking and book binding so that students can add content to their art books.
4 August Instructor: Nate Lewis Rate $350 August Instructor: Tony Conner to Advanced August Instructor: Kristen Tordella-Williams Rate $125 August 23-24, Instructor: Ron Bakerian Level: Intermediate - Advanced Bookmaking Intensive 5-Day This 5-day workshop will focus on every step of creating handmade sketchbooks. Students will learn paper making and book binding. The first half of the week will be used for sheet formation. Once the paper is dry, participants will learn several ways to bind a journal or book using handmade paper. Old books will also be available to add to the rag pulp or used in the bookbinding. Wet Into Wet Watercolor This 2-day workshop will focus on the wet into wet watercolor technique. Students will focus on this special technique to produce paintings that are loose and flowing. Over the course of two days, students will have the opportunity to employ this technique in both representational and abstract paintings. This class is meant for those with at least a bit of experience with watercolor and some basic drawing skills as well. Found and Rebound: Book-Binding This 2-day workshop will focus on an overview of book binding. Students will be introduced to the Coptic-stitch binding and will have the opportunity to experiment with their own designs. Taking full advantage of the Pember Library s donation of hundreds of used books, students will experiment with many kinds of book binding. Intermediate Blacksmithing This 2-day intermediate-level workshop will continue to build on students skills and offer opportunities to explore joinery, and forge welding, as well as creating decorative elements such as twists, scroll work, and leafing. Participants are encouraged to develop individual projects of their own design. September 7-21 Instructor: Craig Usher Rate $750 September Rate $300 - Intermediate Age: 14+* The Vessel of Representation: Portraiture Explored Clay and Mold-Making 2-Week Workshop This new two week workshop will focus on portraiture using clay modeling, drawing, and mold making. This workshop will explore the notion of the head. Students will learn traditional portraiture techniques and clay modeling, while also learning alternative methods of making busts using direct materials like plaster, concrete, foam, wax, and metal mesh. Time will be divided between clay molding and drawing models, with class discussion and slide shows. Students should bring many pictures, ideas, or sketches of subjects of whom they might want to create portraits. Glass 101 This 3-day workshop will focus on the basic principles of glass blowing.
