1 Page 1 Art Department Art I First Six Weeks Getting Acquainted Activities Room Rules, Routine, Supplies and Contracts Discipline before instruction. Vocabulary warm up every morning for roll and room routine. (music a must) Explain and discuss supplies and list ELEMENTS OF ART: use posters, and all projects for the elements of art. SUPPLIES: use left over supplies until everyone has their own. ELEMENTS OF ART: LINE, COLOR, SPACE, TEXTURE, SHAPE, FORM, VALUE. PRINCIPALS OF DESIGN: PATTERN, CONTRAST, MOVEMENT, BALANCE, EMPHASIS, RHYTHM, UNITY. (1) Have students create a bookmark with the elements of art and the principals of design. Create a pocket in the front of the sketch book for the bookmark. (2) Illustrate your name on the other side of the book mark using the elements or principals of design. (3) Laminate. Place in sketch book. (4) Take class, crayon and texture sheet and find as many texture upstairs as possible mount in sk. Bk. Line Design Objectives: Students will define the element of line and demonstrate understanding of various lines by completing the Line Design pattern sheet. Teacher will model differing lines for the students to utilize on their Line Design pattern sheet. Cut stripes of designs and glue them to the front of the sketch book for reference all year.

2 Page 2 ABC-123 Creative Font Objectives: Students will demonstrate creativity and understanding of handmade fonts. Students will use lined computer paper to create their own font. They will then use their font to make their name and other information on their Sketchbook Covers Sketchbook Covers and Nameplates Art Talk text Unit 2 Chapter 4, Elements of Art: Line, p , Check Your Understanding p. 76 Objectives: Students will experience the element of Line, the expression of design, and become familiar with art supplies and medium. They will develop a design cover for their sketchbook. Processes that may be utilized include: magazine collage to reveal something personal and nameplates that incorporate line design and lettering. Use the Elements of Art and Principals of Design and book mark. Brown Paper Roll-out Objectives: Students will work collaboratively to create a work of art. Groups plan and create a cohesive drawing on a large sheet of brown paper. They can work on individual sections or create one large piece. Repeated Pattern Lessons Art Talk text Unit 3 Chapter 8, Rhythm, Pattern and Movement, p , Check Your Understanding p. 213 Objectives: Students will demonstrate their understanding of the elements of shape and color along with the principles of pattern, repetition, and rhythm in a finished design. Repeated Pattern - After class lecture and discussion the student will draw a design, repeat it 8 times on 12 X 18 papers, and complete with color. Kaliedacycles 3D rotating tetrahedrons Students will design and create a kalidacycle with repeating pattern and color scheme Tessellation Poster students will create equilateral triangles with repeated cartoon faces and color scheme to be repeated, matched, and formed into an octagon-shaped poster (these look amazing laminated!) Single Topic Repeated Patterns students will pick a topic and develop a template to be traced over and over Aboriginal Art-use class set of scholastic art magazines for colors and interpretation of Australian art forms. Use large 12x18 paper and create a story with hidden forms. Mona Lisa Puzzle and Graph Objectives: Students will recognize the Mona Lisa by Leonardo divinci. Students will understand the Golden Mean/Divine Proportion. Students will enlarge a puzzle copy of the Mona Lisa using the graphing method. Bones and Cones Art Talk text Unit 1 Chapter 7, Texture, p , Check Your Understanding, p. 176 Objectives: Students will demonstrate the effective use of drawing pencils by creating the elements of form, texture and value. Students will examine a still-life constructed from bones and pines cones to be drawn in their sketchbook effectively utilizing the elements value, shape, and texture. Study Georgia O Keeffe and large works in bones and flowers. Put a skull on each table and have students draw large and paint large, 18 x 24

Color Wheels Art Talk text Unit 1 Chapter 6: Color, p , Check Your Understanding, p. 143 Objectives: Students will experience the color wheel and color theory through hands-on activities individually and with a group Using various media (crayon, colored pencil, tempera paint, marker, and magazine cutouts) students will create several color wheels in their sketchbook to demonstrate their understanding of the color wheel (but does not have to be round). Brown Sack Story Boards Art Talk text: Marc Chagall on p , also see 136 Objectives: Students will demonstrate effective use of tempera paints, composition theory and use of symbols

4 Page 4 After class demonstration and discussion on the techniques of painting and composition, the student will create and illustrate symbols that illustrate their life. The artist Marc Chagall will be used for inspiration. Folded Book Project Objectives: Students will problem-solve making a book from their Brown Sack Story Boards. After class discussion and demonstration students will choose appropriate illustrations of their personal life to include in a folded book with cover and ties. Magazine Extensions Art Talk text, value scale on p Objectives: Students will demonstrate knowledge of value, 2D design, and gradation Students will analyze the value of grey-to-black samples from magazines and newspapers. Using these pieces as a starting point, students will create a design or continue a realistic drawing. This design/drawing will illustrate at least seven shades of gradation. This project really forces students to see and make colors. Trees and Hills Art Talk text: Chapter 5, Lesson 4, Shape and Form, p , Check Your Understanding p. 116 Objectives: Students will demonstrate knowledge of foreground, middle ground, and background, atmospheric perspective, and apply gradation skills learned in previous lesson. Student will illustrate three hills each with three trees, using overlapping, gradation, and texture to create a landscape with foreground, middle ground, and background. Cartooning/Houston Chronicle Editorial Contest Art Talk text: Art and Politics on p. 284 Objectives: Students will analyze the art used in editorial cartoons; students will develop cartoon/caricature drawing skills. Students will practice caricature and cartooning skills, research and analyze a current event, and then create an editorial cartoon. Lucerne cow contest Texture / Shapes and Value * Use run off sheet of squares and walk about the bldg. and rub with crayon or pencil for samples of texture. On each table put a wadded up ball of paper. Wad up in a sphere shape from newspaper, book cover or brown paper from the roll. Students must draw every area and add value and details. * Set up still life with all white objects, lights off, shade, value and texture. * Work with colored construction paper and cut positive and negative shapes and glue in sk. Bk. Using two pages. Tim Burton (Halloween time) movie, writing and illustrating a project, story or painting. Day of the Dead color sheets

5 Art I Third Six Weeks Page 5 Continue Warm Ups Vocabulary/Art History Sketchbook Assignments Textures and Layers building from last six weeks. *Use 12 x 18 paper with glue and tissue paper. Use book Creative Self pg Use 3 random shapes in cardboard and glue on. Paint all one color. See the layers and feel the texture. Paint on metal paints or irridessent, when dry up map pencil or oil pastels for details. Perspective Art Talk text: perspective on p Objectives: Students will learn about and practice one, two, and three point perspective. Students will demonstrate comprehension by illustrating a hallway and an outside building Students will demonstrate comprehension by choosing one of the perspectives and illustrating a city scene. Students may choose warm or cool color schemes to add color. Color Schemes Art Talk text, Chapter 6, lesson 2, Color Schemes, p , Check Your Understanding p. 149 Objectives: Students will demonstrate knowledge of different color schemes (analogous, complementary, etc.) After class discussion and teacher demonstration students will create a visually stimulating picture by analyzing and choosing a color scheme to add to the cityscape in the previous assignment. Cardboard Weaving (Alt: Paper Weaving) Art Talk text: Weaving Techniques, p Objectives: Students will demonstrate awareness of the different types of fiber arts. Student will plan and create a cardboard weaving. Black and White Designs w/bugs Art Talk text: Positive and Negative Space, p. 103 Objectives: Students will demonstrate effective use of pen and ink and utilize prior knowledge of negative and positive space. Students will develop a design based on the organic shapes of insects and add abstract designs in pen and ink. Peter Max Style Graphic Objectives: Students will demonstrate an understanding of graphic art enhanced by viewing and studying the art of Peter Max.

6 Page 6 Students will demonstrate their creativity by creating a poster in the manner of Peter Max using oil pastels or paint. Puzzle Piece Extension Project/ Magazine Extension Objectives: students will demonstrate creative expression. By choosing three to six puzzle pieces to glue to a piece of paper and developing extensions to continue the design. Realism or abstract images can be incorporated as the student demonstrates a personal theme. Stamps & Prints (using erasers) Art Talk text: Printmaking, p , 312, 313 Objective: Students will be introducing to printmaking techniques. Students will demonstrate understanding of positive and negative space, mirror image, and design qualities. Students will experiment from a selection of 9 different stamping techniques with a variety of stamps and a variety of inks/paints/markers on white and colored papers. Students will then add pen, pencil, marker, or ink designs, cut, and then create a collage. Art I Fourth Six Weeks Continue Warm Ups Vocabulary/Art History Sketchbook Assignments Pass out grid warm up of upside down female. Positive and Negative Space Totems Art Talk text: Positive and Negative Space, p. 103 Objectives: Students will be introduced to the element of space in 2D art and the concept of positive and negative space. Students will learn about North American Indian symbols Using the art elements of space and shape, students will create a three-section totem pole with colored paper, black paper, and scissors. Students will demonstrate comprehension of North American Indian art by utilizing elements of Indian art in their totem designs. Eyes, Mouths, and Noses Objectives: Students will observe life figures and create a visual solution by elaborating on personal observation Students will find 2 eyes and 1 nose/mouth combination from magazines, glue them in their sketchbook to use as resources for realistic drawings Half-Faces

7 Page 7 Art Talk text: Drawing Human Proportions, p Objectives: Students will observe the human face and find solutions for visually portraying faces Students will make a black-and-white copy of a face from a magazine, cut it in half, glue it in their sketchbook and draw the other half. Self-Portrait with a Grid Art Talk text: Making a Grid on p. 431, pages Objectives: Students will demonstrate ability to use the grid method of reproduction and enlargement. Hint make a one inch square view finder to place over one square at a time to help transfer each square. It helps the roaming eye and transferring the drawing. Students will pose for a head shot with a digital camera. They will graph the colored one to use as a grid and the Xerox copy to shape out the values to create 2 more portraits. One in pencil and one in tempera paint or crayon or watercolor, focus on shape & value Each student will end up with 4 portraits to display Bottles and Flowers in Pastels Objectives: Students will demonstrate effective use of chalk and oil pastels Students will select bottles and flowers to create a still life to be finished in chalk or oil pastels in their sketchbook. Blending techniques will be addressed. Students will create an enlarged composition on grey or black paper with chalk or oil pastels. Seven Line Cubism Art Talk text: Cubism, p. 375 Objectives: Students will participate in a project based on cubism. Students will draw the contour of a recognizable shape on their paper. They will then draw 7 lines across the surface of their paper: 4 lines beginning along the long side of the paper and 3 lines along the short side of the paper across to the other side. Choosing two colors, they will then effectively demonstrate gradation in a checkerboard style in the spaces created by their recognizable shape and the 7 lines. Gradations Objectives: After lecture and teacher example, students will demonstrate their understanding of gradation. After choosing a recognizable shape and drawing it on their paper, students will divide their paper into sections with vertical, horizontal, diagonal, or curved lines. Each newly created space will be shaded with values of one color.

8 Art I Fifth Six Weeks Page 8 Continue Warm Ups Vocabulary/Art History Grid Puzzles Paper Cut-Outs Objectives: Students will learn about Henri Matisse and his use of paper cut-outs to create works of art. Students will also demonstrate creative use of balance in composition. Using colored construction paper, students will create symbolic cut-outs in the manner of Henri Matisse. Three types of balance (symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial) will be discussed. Watercolor Objectives: Students will demonstrate effective use of watercolor. Students will experiment with several watercolor techniques using salt, wax, and plastic wrap. Choosing a combination of techniques students will create a watercolor that may be abstract or realistic (i.e. Draw an underwater scene in crayon or oil pastel, add watercolor and observe how wax or oil resist watercolor) Still Life Mixed Media Study/Western Art Art Talk text: Composition, p. 19 Objectives: Students will understand how to create an effective composition using a frame, as well as how to mix and use various mediums. Students will draw from a large still life using a viewfinder to crop and isolate a section. They will have the opportunity to do a Western still life for the Montgomery County Fair. Students will have a choice of media. Escher Tessellations/Fibonacci Objectives: Students will about the artist M.C. Escher and his unique tessellations as well as Fibonacci-style designers Students will study the works of M.C. Escher and create either an Escher or a Fibonacci design. OP art Charcoal Objectives: Students will learn the properties of charcoal drawing by doing one or more of the following projects: Drawing shoes on grey paper using charcoal and white chalk Using copies of a 20 th century artist s work, student will do an interpretation in charcoal. They will demonstrate the use of value as well as to do an abstraction. Drawing soft, furry animals.

9 Drawing a winter tree landscape Page 9 Fancy Footwear Objectives: Students will demonstrate a creative approach to repeated pattern and color in an overall unified design. Using big paper students will draw their shoe 3X; then continue by trading shoes with other students until their paper is covered with shapes. Students will choose a color scheme to be done in markers, crayons, map pencils and a little watercolor. Three-Dimensional Projects Art Talk text: Chapter 3, Lesson 2, Three-Demensional Media, p , Check Your Understanding p. 56 Objectives: Students will demonstrate creative expression through the study of 3D art Students will choose from the following 3D Projects: toothpick or twig sculpture bas-relief using cardboard and foil bas-relief using sheetrock Art I Sixth Six Weeks Continue Warm Ups Vocabulary/Art History Sketchbook Assignments Cannon Puzzle Design Synthesis Art Talk text: Chapter 11, Lesson 1, Principles p , Check Your Understanding p. 295 Objectives: Students will demonstrate how to create unity through continuation and repetition. Students will create 5 realistic or decorative designs on a strip of 10 x 2 paper, arrange them in a checkerboard fashion, and complete the design using the principles of design. Collage or Vertical Hologram Objectives: Understanding collages such as those created by Picasso, Baque, Romaine Bearden, and David Hockney. Students will also learn about Surrealism. Students will use pieces from magazines, fabric, painted paper, etc. to create a collage with a theme. Students may also create a vertical hologram from magazines. Scratchboard Objectives: Use the different shading techniques to create a design or drawing on scratchboard. Students will first draw thumbnail sketches in the sketch book, practice different scratchboard techniques, and then apply them to a final study.

10 Page 10 Color Schemes Art Talk text: Chapter 2, Lesson 6, p , Check Your Understanding p. 149 Objectives: Learn about different color schemes (complementary, analogous, etc.) After a group presentation about the different color schemes, students will use one of the schemes to create an abstract design. Tissue Paper Transfer Objectives: Overview of how paper is made. Students will create their own paper to use for the calligraphy assignment by transferring the color in tissue paper to a sheet of paper. Calligraphy Art Talk text: Calligraphic Drawing, p. 83 Objectives: Students will learn about the history of calligraphy. Students practice the different forms and use them in a practical way (invitations, poems, thank-you notes, etc.) Paper Weaving Objectives: Students will demonstrate an awareness of the different types of fiber art Students will learn to do a colored paper or magazine strip weaving Polymer Clay Objectives: Students will utilize their understanding of color schemes and contemporary design to create polymer clay jewelry, cover a votive candle, or create a picture frame. Students will learn about the art of caning by creating a kaleidoscope cane with polymer clay. They may then choose to cover a votive candle, cover a frame or make beads for jewelry. Hemp Bracelet/Necklace lesson is the companion lesson. Hemp Bracelet/Necklace Objective: Students will develop knot tying skills. Students will learn to tie macramé necklaces or bracelets.
