Geralds, Vessel Project Plan 3 Project Description Project Plan Purpose The Project Plan overviews the entire project section by section: Project Description, Project Budget, and Schedule and Milestones. The Project Description is the bulk of the plan, describing the purpose, audience, contents, and design. The Project Budget breaks down the price for each booklet. The Schedule and Milestones detail past process and outline process for the remaining month. Project Deliverables The project deliverables are a project plan, print and digital copies of the booklet, and instruction for maintenance. The print copies include 1 full, stab-bound, color copy and 1 full, staple-bound, black and white copy. The digital copies include Portable Document Format (PDF) of the color and black and white booklets, InDesign CS2 files of the booklets, Illustrator diagrams and charts, and original photographs. Project Purpose The booklet is an educational supplement for new metalsmithing students. The courses Metals 1 and Metals 2 give vessel-raising as an assignment. The professor teaches students the process, but isn t available during outside studio hours. This booklet aids students by providing new terms and breaking the vessel-raising process into step-by-step instructions and provides a photographic record of the entire process. After students are done with the course, they can take the booklet as a reference and reminder for future projects. At the start of the project, the plan is to thoroughly detail the vessel-raising process in the booklet. The metalsmithing and photography tasks take a greater part of the time available in this semester, so the depth of the booklet is limited. In the future, the project could be made into a detailed text, companion website, posters, and a series of laminated cards. This requires more in-depth explanations and editing, but the result could be salable aid. Project Audiences The project has three major audiences: new metalsmithing students, experienced students, and teachers. The main audience are undergraduate students new to metalsmithing. Undergraduate students are typically 18 to 22 years old, older if they are nontraditional or transfer students. If they are art majors, they have skills from the Foundations Core. If they aren t art majors, they may have skills from 3-D Concepts. The secondary audience consists of students with metalsmithing and vessel-raising experience. They have skills from the Foundations Core and Metals courses at UNI or other university Metals courses. Teachers are the last major audience with medium to expert levels of experience. They look for an inexpensive student reference for their beginning metals courses.
Geralds, Vessel Project Plan 4 Project Contents Booklet Purpose Statement The booklet purpose statement forecasts the contents of the booklet and defines what it will and will not show. Table of Contents The table of contents divides the chapters into detailed subsections. Process Overview The overview gives a complete diagram of the process and a photographic chronology of vessel-raising. As new students are unfamiliar with metalsmithing terms, the diagram shows these terms. The chronology shows students how the metal is shaped into the final form. Equipment and Materials This section lists the equipment and materials the reader needs to complete the project. The equipment is broken into studio and personal equipment. It gives a short summary of the tool s function, use, and safety warnings. Beginning the Vessel This section tells how to cut a disc from square sheet of metal. Students often purchase a sheet, rather than a disc. Shaping the Vessel The basic process is a cycle or round consisting of five basic steps: anneal, pickle, draw, shape, and true. At any time during this process, the student can file and repair the vessel. Each step may contain cautions, pictures of equipment, charts, illustrations of postures and movements, and diagrams detailing changes in flame and metal surface. Finishing the Vessel Students add a foot, planish one last time to harden the vessel, and clean the surface. At this time, students can also add a surface color. Problems This section shows how to repair crack and dents with the dremel tool and snarling iron. Resources This section lists books and websites for learning about vessel-raising, metalsmithing in general, and stores. Index The index is a quick reference of all booklet content.
Geralds, Vessel Project Plan 5 Project Design The audience s design needs give shape to the booklet. The main audience needs clear and consistent content and space for note-taking. As the secondary audience will mainly rely on their experience, they need to quickly review the processes to fill in their memory gaps. The expert audience needs correct and safe processes shown in steps and illustrations. The booklet is color or black and white, 5.5 by 8.5, stapled down the center. The booklet is available in color and in black and white. While color is more attractive and gives more detail, the black and white version is inexpensive and easier to photocopy. This size is easy to print, gives enough space in layout for large illustrations and notes, and is small enough for students to carry it in their backpack or tool box. It is also easy to place it on a table top without struggling to keep it open or taking too much space. The booklet will be about 40 pages or less altogether. TOC - 2 pages Introduction - 6 pages Beginning the Vessel - 6 pages Shaping the Vessel - 10 pages Finishing the Vessel - 4 pages Problems - 4 pages Resources - 2 pages Index - 2 pages All booklets are printed, cut, and bound with either a staple or comb binding. The Art Lab and UNI Print Services Several printers are available. Project Tasks The major tasks of this project are as project management, research, layout, photography, illustration, testing, review, and maintenance. Project management Geralds writes the Student Informal Proposal, Proposed Contents and Timeline, and Project Plan. The Student Informal Proposal suggests this booklet to Prof. Duffy and Dr. Lamberti. The Proposed Contents and Timeline outline the process and time for photographic documentation. The Project Plan details the entire project and includes revised contents. Prof. Duffy provides initial direction on the contents and physical form of the booklet, reviews of the first draft of the booklet, and comments on the final booklet. Research Geralds reviews popular metalsmithing books, instruction booklets, and photography.
Geralds, Vessel Project Plan 6 Layout Geralds chooses the size, typographic hierarchy, color scheme, and graphic style are chosen in the Content Samples. All the writing, photographs, and illustrations are combined in Adobe InDesign. Metalsmithing Geralds shapes the vessel according to the process shown in the Prof. Duffy provides studio space, answers questions on the forming process, teaches the basics of photography, provides feedback on vessel progress, and grades the final vessel. Photography Geralds acquires Photo Lab equipment, set up the equipment, and take photographs. To help me do these tasks, Prof. Duffy taught the basics of photography and lends equipment as needed. Illustration Geralds uses existing diagrams and photographs as templates for illustrations created in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Testing New and experienced students test the book for clarity and easy use in layout, writing, processes, and illustrations. Review Prof. Duffy reviews the text for correct terms, usage, and safety. Dr. Lamberti reviews the text for clarity and consistency. Maintenance To aid Prof. Duffy in updating the content of the booklet, Geralds gives print and digital copies as well as instruction on how to print and update the document. Project Challenges The major challenge of this project is to complete the entire project before the end of the semester. Often project management, research, layout, photography, and illustration are completed by a small group of people rather than one person. Writer Qualifications From her coursework and work experience, Geralds has the visual, verbal, and metalsmithing skills to complete this project. At the end of this semester, she completes her major in graphic design major and minor in professional writing. In past jobs, she works successfully with clients: North American Review, Communications Department, and Industrial Technology Department. At the North American Review, she works with editors to proof manuscripts and layout a magazine. At the Communications Department, she works with a committee to produce a brochure for their e-media conference. At the
Geralds, Vessel Project Plan 7 Industrial Technology Department, she works with a professor to develop educational signage for a wind, solar, and hydro power station. Project Budget The costs are based per with Print Services. Price Breakdown for one 40-page booklet (each copy has 4 pages) $0.75 per color tabloid copy, 10 copies at $7.50 $0.07 per bw tabloid copy, 10 copies at $0.70 $0.08 for cutting $0.12 for staple binding Price Breakdown for one booklet and 20 booklets $7.70 per color booklet $1.70 per black and white booklet $ for 20 color booklets $34.00 for 20 black and white booklets Schedule and Milestones Past Progress Week One (January 8th-January 13th): Meeting and General Discussion Geralds meets with Prof. Duffy during the first week to discuss the project. Prof. Duffy gives several popular metalsmithing textbooks for research: The Complete Metalsmith by Tim McCreight, Form Emphasis for Metalsmiths by Heikki Seppä, Silversmithing by Rupert Finegold and William Seitz, and Jewelry Concepts and Technology by Oppi Untracht. Week Two (January 14th-January 20th): Refine Focus and Organization Geralds creates a Proposed Contents document from old metalsmithing notes, popular metalsmithing texts, and former booklet exercises. Most textbooks are not focused on any one project, and therefore have relevant information scattered throughout several chapters. To make this project unique, Geralds takes the best of these explanations and illustrations and puts them into one focused and light guide. Week Three (January 21st-January 27th): Review of Booklet Contents, Learning Photography, Practice raising Prof. Duffy reviews the Proposed Contents and possible formats. (The appropriate changes are included in the Project Content section of this plan.) The plan was to begin the vessel at the end of the third week. As Geralds has no knowledge of taking photographs and setting up equipment, Prof. Duffy teaches the basics of photography.
Geralds, Vessel Project Plan 8 Though this delayed the vessel by a week, Geralds practices raising and takes sample pictures of a vessel, equipment, and postures for review by Prof. Duffy. Week Four (January 28th-February 3rd): Learning Photography, Getting Equipment, Researching Formats Geralds begins to make the vessel and take photographs of the preparation, sinking, and raising phases. The Photo Lab lends lights. Weeks Five, Six, Seven, and Eight (February 4th-March 3rd): Raising, Photography, Researching Formats and Illustrations Geralds documents raising about 15 hours each week, primarily on the weekends. The weekends provide large chunks of time to raise and photograph with the photo setup. Geralds initially estimates 60 hours for raising but needs more time. Raising is slower from the larger size of the vessel, photography, and her careful process. She also researches instructional book layouts and technical illustrations. Week Nine (March 4th-March 10th): Project Plan Geralds writes the project plan, overviews past progress, and reschedules the second half of the semester. Week Ten (March 11th-March 17th): Finishing Vessel Geralds finishes raising, photography, and the majority of planishing. Spring Break frees large blocks of time and allows a faster pace. Week Eleven (March 18th-March 24th): Project Plan Geralds completes a rough draft of the project plan for review by Dr. Lamberti. Week Twelve (March 25-March 31st): Project Plan and Content Samples Geralds adds booklet content into the project plan, revises its organization, and creates a standard layout for the booklet. Remaining Time Each major task is detailed on the Gantt chart. Milestones are given for each week.
