12 5. INTERACTIVE FEATURES 5.1 MENU SELECTION: VERBAL INTEGRATION This mechanic would be functional within the: start screen button/menu UI (selecting options, navigating the menu) end level menu (choosing where to go next) The integration point is meant to describe where the interactive element would fit into the overall product. Descriptions of what information it is meant to illustrate should be fully explored, and a screenshot of the proposed integration point should be utilized, if applicable. Purpose The purpose of the interactive element is to provide a clear, consistent selection mechanic that is both reliable and easy to use. A mechanic that is simple to learn and use will help to build the player's confidence. We decided not to use in-game mechanics here, primarily because we were concerned with consistency (teaching players to select substances by swatting them could be confusing). The purpose of the interactive element should be described so that we can define why the interaction is needed and what purpose it would serve in the overall experience. Basic Functionality Players will select their desired options by speaking the initiation phrase, as instructed on the screen, or placing their hand over the phrase. Players will then move on to the next screen and/or set of instructions. The Basic Functionality section should be used to give a brief overview of the functionality type and a short sentence on what the overall interaction will be. Start screen LAYOUT full-screen background simple text instructions that will read When you are ready, say Take Control to begin or place your hand over Take Control! FUNCTIONALITY Players will begin the game by stating the initiation phrase When you are ready, say Take Control to begin! or placing their hand over the phrase. This functionality also needs to support non-english speakers with visual instructions of how to utilize hand gestures. Page 12 of 20

13 Full, textual descriptions of both the visual layout and the functionality needed should be described per screen. Descriptions should cover all needed elements of layout (images needed, placement, color examples) and functionality (interactive features, how the elements interact, what occurs at each step of the player engagement on the screen, how the screen bridges to the next or ends / resets the experience). A visual screenshot to illustrate the idea can be included, but should not be relied on over textual description. Time Estimate GRAPHICS full-screen illustrated background instructions ESTIMATED TIME NEEDED FOR GRAPHICS: 1 hour CODING start functionality transition animation integration between start screen and UI selection mechanic graphics integration ESTIMATED TIME NEEDED FOR CODING FUNCTIONALITY: 3 hours Estimates should be given for the visual and functionality development for the overall interactive feature. Tutorial Screen LAYOUT Chosen background Chosen icon / substances Visual rendering of play onscreen FUNCTIONALITY Players will be taught how to play through a tutorial situation, having their selected background and object integrated into a play-through prior to full game-play, as well as how scoring will be achieved. Additionally, a wrapper will supply information on the purpose of game-play and what is expected to be achieved as a result of the game. This should be repeated at each level to incorporate changed play actions (new objects) and to monitor status of player if they are ready, more confident, etc. This information is pulled from the GamePlay component of the user manual ( The game should ascertain the player s stage of change in order to accommodate that level of game-play. Full, textual descriptions of both the visual layout and the functionality needed should be described per screen. Descriptions should cover all needed elements of layout (images needed, placement, color examples) and functionality (interactive features, how the elements interact, what occurs at each step of the player engagement on the screen, how the screen bridges to the next or ends / resets the experience). She will utilize the GDD to create visual examples of the features described. These visual mock-ups will be available and reviewed by the collective employees of Clinical Tools, Inc. through the use of blogs and access to the shared images folder where they will be stored. Refinements and adaptations to the images will be made by our graphic designer until such time as the layouts are approved. A description of the employee(s) who are responsible for the graphic design of the interactive elements should be included here. The process by which review and revisions of the graphics are done should be fully described, and the completion point of this stage of the development should be indicated. 6.3 FUNCTIONALITY AND LIVE RELEASE Once the graphics are approved, integration of basic functionality will be completed by our programmer and reviewed by the collective employees of Clinical Tools, Inc. through the use of blogs and access to the testing pages where these features are stored. Refinements and adaptations to the functional prototypes will be made by our programmer during both internal and external review. Once the functional prototype has been reviewed and approved by both internal and external reviewers, the code will be integrated into the relevant pages by our programmer. A description of the employee(s) who are responsible for the functionality integration should be included here. The process by which review and revisions of the functional prototype are made should be fully described. Page 20 of 20
