4 UDC S : fndian Standard SPECFCATON FOR % BCYCLE STEERNG HEAD ASSEMBLY ( R TYPE). Scope - Covers the dimensions and other requirements for bicycle steering head assembly of R type.!. Nomenclature - The nomenclature for various components of the steering head assembly is in accordance with S : Glossary of terms used in the bicycle industry. 1. Dimensions 3.1 The ball race seatings shall conform to the dimensions given in Fig. 1 and 2. All dimensions n mllllmetres. 5 S : The crown and screwed races shall be suitably heat treated to a case depth of mm to obtain a minimum hardness of 600 HV ( with 5 kgf load ) or its equivalent in other scales. FG. 3 CROWN BALL RACE 4.2 When a lamp bracket is included in the assembly, it shall be made of steel conforming to * S : Finish 5.1 The top and bottom ball race seatings shall be nickel-chrome plated to Service Grade No. 1 ( Classification SNilObCrr) of S : Specification for electroplated coatings of nickel plus chromium and copper plus nickel plus chromium on iron and steel ( second revision ). 5.2 The crown race and screwed race shall be nickel-chrome plated to Grade No. 1 ( Classification Fe/NilObCrr ) of S : Alternatively, the crown race may only be zinc plated to Service Grade No. 1 ( Classification Fe/Zn 5 ) of S : Specification for electroplated coatings of zinc on iron and steel ( second revision ). 2

6 S : The lock nut and the lamp bracket ( when fitted ) shall also be nickel and chrome plated to Service Grade No. 1 ( Classification SNilObCrr ) of S : OCTAGONAL A/F 41.5 NOM All dimensions in millimetres. Tests 6.1 The steering head assembly shall rotate freely after assembly ( see also S : 10616_lgg3 Methods of tests for bicycles and sub assemblies ). 7. Marking - Shall be marked with the manufacturer s name, initials or trade-mark, and country of origin, etc. 7.1 Standard Marking - Details available with the Bureau of ndian Standards. 8. Packing - Shall be in accordance with the best prevalent trade practices. 9. Sampling 9.1 Unless otherwise agreed to between the supplier and the purchaser, the procedure given in S : 2500 ( Part 1 )-1973 Sampling inspection tables: Part 1 nspection by attributes and by count of defects ( first revision ) shall be followed for sampling inspection. 3

7 S : For dimensions, flnish and workmanship, inspection level V and acceptable quality level ( AQL ) 2.5 percent as given in Tables 1 and 2 of S : 2500 ( Part,1 )-1973 shall be followed. EXPLANATORY NOTE The bicycle steering head assemblies used in popular brands in ndia are normally either PH or R type. n this standard, the R type is covered. PH type is covered separately in S : Specification for bicycles steering head assembly ( PH type ) ( first revision ).
