5 Chemical Methods of Test Sectional Committee, TX 05 FOREWORD This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by the Chemical Methods of Test Sectional Committee had been approved by the Textile Division Council. In the preparation of this standard considerable assistance has been derived from DIN Testing of textile- Determination of water absorption of textile fabrics. In reporting the results of a test or analysis made in accordance with this standard, if the final value, observed or calculated, is to be rounded off, it shall be done in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised).

6 IS : 1998 _ Indian Standard TEXTILES- METHODFORDETERMINATION OFABSORBANCYOFTERRYTOWELS 1 SCOPE This standard prescribes a method for determination of water absorption of terry towels and fabrics having high water absorption capacity. 2 REFERENCES The following Indian Standards are necessary adjuncts to this standard : IS No. 460 (Part 2) : : : TERMINOLOGY Title Specification for test sieves: Part 2 Perforated plate test sieves (third revision) Method for conditioning of textiles Methods for preparation of laboratory test samples and test specimens of textile materials for chemical testing For the purpose this standard, the following definition shall apply. 3.1 Water Absorption Capacity The water absorption capacity is the quantity of water absorbed by a textile material after storage in water and expressed as percentage of original weight of the material. 4 APPARATUS 4.1 Stainless steel perforated plate test sieve of at least 120 mm x 120 mm with metallic frame [see IS 460 (Part 2)]. 4.2 Suitable vessel with distilled water for inserting the wire netting with the test piece placed on it. 4.3 Glass weighing bottle with ground lid. 5 SAMPLING AND SAMPLE PREPARATION Test pieces of 100 mm x IO0 mm are cut out from the test specimens. Ifan individual test piece weighs lesser than 1 g, several test pieces are put one above the other to form a test piece stack which shall weigh at least 1 g. At least 5 test pieces/stacks shall be tested. 6 PROCEDURE The test piece and/or stack conditioned to moisture equilibrium in standard atmosphere in accordance with IS 6359 is weighed up to 0.01 g (mk). It is then put on the perforated plate test sieve and fixed with pins or clips on the corners. The sieve with the test piece put on it, is immersed flat in a suitable vessel containing distilled water at C in such a manner that the top edge of frame is at least 20 mm below the water level. The formation of air bubbles under the test piece is avoided by introducing the sieve slant in water. After an exposure time of 60 s k 3 s, the sieve with the test piece is removed from the vessel and after removing three pins or clips it is tilted against the horizontal line for dripping for a period of 120 s + 3 s in such a manner that the test piece is lifted off the sieve and allowed to hang freely. The test piece is removed from the sieve and is placed in a tared weighing bottle which is closed immediately with the lid and is weighed up to 0.01 g. The weight of the wet test piece is denoted by nz,,. 7 EVALUATION The water absorption (WA) in percent by weight referring to the weight of conditioned test piece (mk) is calculated as under: WA=+ - 7*k x IO0 Calculate average of five specimens 8 TEST REPORT tested. The test report shall include the following: 4 Type and description of the test pieces; b) Number of layers; c) Water absorption in percent by weight rounded to whole number; 4 individual values and arithmetic mean; and e) Deviations, if any, from the standard.
