1 MODULE 4 Planning your house continued Planning Entrances Identify the purpose, uses and activities at the main entrance in a residence. Describe possible moods or feelings that a designer may try to convey/evoke through the design of the main entrance. List the physical features of an entrance (i.e. shape, size, volume, layout, furniture requirements, light requirements, adjacency, circulation, enclosure, etc.). Exercise: Beside the bubble diagram, sketch a sample entrance at 1:100 appropriate to your project design concept that fulfils the physical requirements and evokes the desired mood or feeling. Planning Kitchens Identify the activities in the kitchen of a residence. The three activity centres in a kitchen are Storage, Preparation & Cleaning, and Cooking & Serving. Consider the 20' work triangle. Discuss possible aesthetic design styles of kitchen. As a group, describe the physical features of a kitchen (i.e. shape, size, volume, layout, furniture requirements, light requirements, adjacency, circulation, enclosure, etc.). How does plumbing impact the layout and location of a kitchen. (mechanical spaces) Review the size, location and graphic standard for each piece of kitchen equipment. Cabinet sizes; base cabinets 24" deep x 36" high, wall cabinets (uppers) 12" deep x 30" high
2 Exercise: Beside the bubble diagram, sketch a sample kitchen at 1:100 appropriate to your project design concept that fulfils the physical requirements and evokes the desired mood or feeling. Consider its adjacency to the living room, dining room and powder room! Describe possible moods or feelings that a designer may try to convey/evoke through the design of the dining room. List the physical features of a dining room (i.e. shape, size, volume, layout, furniture requirements, light requirements, adjacency, circulation, enclosure, etc.) Exercise: Beside the bubble diagram, sketch a sample dining room at 1:100 appropriate to your project design concept that fulfils the physical requirements and evokes the desired mood or feeling. Include (especially) the furniture layout, and consider circulation in this room.
4 Planning Living Rooms Identify the purpose, uses and activities in the living room in a residence. Describe possible design aesthetics in design of the living room. How many living rooms are required? List the physical features of a living room (i.e. shape, size, volume, layout, furniture requirements, light requirements, adjacency, circulation, enclosure, etc.) Identify how much space people require in a living room to be comfortable. Exercise: Beside the bubble diagram, sketch a sample living room at 1:100 appropriate to your project design concept that fulfils the physical requirements and design aesthetic. Consider the type of enclosure you want in this room. Do you want a cozy, enclosed room, or an open, airy room? Planning Washrooms Describe possible design aesthetic that a designer may try to convey/evoke through the design of the washroom. Will it be the same for an ensuite and powder room? List the physical features of a washroom (i.e. shape, size, volume, layout, furniture requirements, light requirements, adjacency, circulation, enclosure, etc.). Describe the attributes of the different types of washrooms - two piece, full, ensuite, etc. Review typical layout options for each. Describe how plumbing impacts the layout and location of washrooms.

Exercise: Away from the main floor bubble diagram, sketch a main 2nd floor washroom appropriate to your project design concept that fulfils the physical requirements. Circulation is especially critical in this room - keep it efficient!
6 Planning Service Areas Define and list the types of service spaces. Identify the purpose of each. Identify how much storage space is appropriate and what shape should it have. What are some possible car storage options? How can these best be achieved? List the physical features of service spaces (i.e. shape, size, volume, layout, furniture requirements, light requirements, adjacency, circulation, enclosure, etc.) Identify the size, location and graphic standard for each service space fixture. How big is a residential furnace? Hot water tank? Water softener? Washer? Dryer? Where should service fixture be in relation to the kitchen and bathrooms? Exercise: On a separate piece of trace, sketch the outline of your proposed basement over the main floor bubble diagram that you have created. Roughly sketch where each of the service areas could be located. Planning Bedrooms Describe possible design aesthetic that a designer may try to create in bedrooms. List the physical features of a bedroom (i.e. shape, size, volume, layout, furniture requirements, light requirements, adjacency, circulation, enclosure, etc.).
7 Describe how furniture groupings affect the size and shape of the bedrooms. Sketch a sample bedroom appropriate to your project design concept that fulfils the physical requirements and evokes the desired mood or feeling. Take note of the graphic conventions for showing closet spaces. Exercise: On a separate piece of trace, sketch a sample master bedroom at 1:100 appropriate to your project design concept that fulfils the physical requirements and evokes the desired mood or feeling. Make sure it fits into your house! Debriefing: Review your diagram with a classmate, ask instructor if you have
