5 BALANCE A principle of art that refers to the stability of the visual weight of a work of art. Can be Symmetrical Asymmetrical Radially Balanced

6 BALANCE Asymmetry: the object or image is different or heavier on one side, creates a sense of instability Symmetry: the object or image is the same on both sides, creates a sense of stability Radial Balance: the object or image is the same as it radiates out from a central point, creates a sense of stability

30 TEXTURED COLOR WHEEL For this project we will be creating radially balanced work of art by creating a color wheel with all 12 colors, featuring a variety of textures of each color found in magazine clippings. Elements of Art: Color Texture Principles of Art: Balance Variety

31 CREATING THE COLOR WHEEL Use pencil to LIGHTLY quarter the paper Mark the halfway point on each side (6 ) Draw lines to connect Divide each quarter into thirds Like a clock 30 degrees per slice

32 COLOR WHEEL RINGS Measure & draw the outer circle using a compass Divide the circle into 3 equal rings +/- (divide radius by 3) Each color will be divided into 3 sections for 3 different textures

33 FIND COLORS & TEXTURES Search for 3 different textures for each of the 12 colors in various magazines Make sure you have all 36 & that your pieces are big enough to cover the section

34 TRIMMING THE SLICES Use X-Acto knife / scissors (SAFETY FIRST) to cut out the magazine clipping to be the same size as the section of the color wheel (no gaps) Remember: Put a cutting mat / cardboard over table Be careful when using sharp blades

35 PUTTING IT TOGETHER Glue all 36 of your pieces in the correct place on the color wheel Remember Back Name & Class Pd. Front _ Artist Signature (Bottom Right)

36 ARTIST STATEMENT Respond to the following in full sentences. Be sure to use your art vocabulary, cite visual evidence within your artwork, & be specific. What kind of balance have you achieved?
