1 Spectrum Design IDEA: This painting project is a good follow up to color chart 1. By using the chromatic scale and mixing all the colors in a 12 color scale, the student can create a composition using the division of thirds, focal point, rhythm, and balance to paint a series of these scales. The lines used in the design show many variations. In this painting, they can practice mixing the primary, secondary and tertiary colors. The student will be able to: 1. Identify and use different type of line designs such as straight, wavy, curved, interrupted and concentric line. 2. Create a composition with any combination of line types. 3. Plan for the painting using the color yellow first, and then follow with the use of the chromatic scale showing a change from yellow around the color wheel. Transfer to board. 4. Transfer the design to chipboard. 5. Paint even, flat areas using tempera paint. Make use of a ruler and removable tape for painting straight edges. 6. Use at least one of every color in the chromatic scale. Materials need for the project: Newsprint Chipboard Tempera paint Palette Brushes, small round Water Paper towels Graphite Newsprint Rulers and compasses Removable tape (optional) A TIME LINE IS INCLUDED: The total amount of time spent on this project will appear below this paragraph. The approximate time needed to finish each 'activity', in this project, is also indicated. The timeline is based on 180 school days, with a class meeting 5 days a week and a class period of 55 minutes. The 55 minutes are reduced to 45 minutes of actual teaching time; with 5 minutes for preparation and 5 minutes for clean up. Hints/Tips will occur throughout this project. They are suggestions that will make the process easier or will contribute to greater success. They will be highlighted for easy recognition. The Hints/Tips can be skipped over for quicker reading or reviewed for fuller understanding of the procedure and presenting the project.
2 Activity 1: The student will be able to identify and use different type of line designs such as straight, wavy, curved, interrupted and concentric line. (Approximately 35 min.) Materials: newsprint, #2 pencil, rulers, compasses, 1. Straight line: Lines are straight with no bends; they can come from different directions and should have a variety of size and space between lines. 2. Bent lines- these lines are straight lines that change direction often. They should follow along similarly with the line drawn before it. There is a variety of space between lines to show difference and rhythm between lines.
3 3. Wavy lines, without using rulers. These lines also have similar directions but vary in the space between lines. These can change slightly to show rhythm and movement. Starting with one line and changing the curve of that line, make more lines that follow this first line. Use variations of distance between lines for variety of space. 4. Concentric line, that will have lines whether straight or wavy, that have the same center. These are not to be perfect (but they can be made with a compass) but seem to radiate from the same area. Activity 2: The student will be able to create a composition with any combination of line types. (Approximately 2 days) Materials: newsprint, #2 pencil, rulers, compasses, This composition is a combination of one or more of these lines that also uses the principles of proper composition. There should be a focal point or center of interest, rhythm and directional movement. This is achieved with the use of similar line types. Not all types of lines need to be
4 used together. There should be at least 5 to 7 lines of the same type used before it changes to a different type and style. Balance will be important but can be achieved with color choices later. Here are some examples of line compositions that can be used for this painting. Bent line and straight lines form this composition Using concentric and similar types of lines help to create rhythm and similarity.
5 Wavy lines with a single co-centric area Activity 3: The student will be able to plan for the painting using the color yellow first, and then follow with the use of the chromatic scale showing a change from Yellow around the color wheel. (Approximately 1 day) Yellow is the brightest of all the colors and the lightest. It will attract the eye of the viewer first so we will use it as our area of emphasis. Look at your design and select a shape to be yellow. Then use the chromatic scale to select colors that move away from the yellow shape. You can use either YG, or YO and then follow the chromatic scale.
6 Use yellow, then by following the chromatic scale go through the section marking the colors. The arrows indicate using the chromatic scale in this row starting with that color. More yellows are added and the arrow indicates the changes according to the chromatic scale. You should mark the sketch (newsprint) first. Activity 4: The student will be able to transfer the design to chipboard. (Approximately 30 min.) Use graphite on the back of the sketch and use a towel to rub the graphite into newsprint. Then tape the sketch onto chipboard or a stiff painting surface. Trace over the newsprint using a color pencil and it will put a light line on the board. Now you are ready to paint. Activity 5: The student will be able to paint even, flat areas using tempera paint. Make use of a ruler and removable tape for painting straight edges. (Approximately 6 days) Materials: Tempera paint, palettes, water jar, paper towels, brushes, removable tape. Painting a straight line is essential for a hard-edged painting such as this. Here are some tips! a. Use a ruler on end, at a 45 degree angle and use the ferrule (metal section of the brush) to go along the ruler for a straight line. b. Place removable tape (found in office supply stores) over the edge of a straight shape. Press down and cut with an x-acto knife to take off excess tape. Paint in the area with brush strokes that follow the line of the tape, not going into the tape. Let dry and remove tape. Use both sides of the tape and repeat same colors to save tape.
7 Here is a design that is started with yellow and then more colors are added. Paint all the areas of one color before you move to a new one. You cannot mix the very same color again so it is best to make enough to paint all needed areas. Paint every shape in the painting making sure it is covering the board and is smooth. Wavy or curved areas should be painted with the brush being used toward you and not at an awkward angle. Use enough paint for the brush to flow one time over an area. Change your water often to avoid mixing colors with dirty water. Activity 6: The student will be able to use at least one of every color in the chromatic scale. Materials: Tempera paint, palettes, water jar, paper towels, brushes, removable tape. To complete the chromatic scale it is important to try and use all the colors (12) in the chromatic scale. Try changing which direction to apply the chromatic scale such as yellow, yellow-orange, red, red-violet, etc. or yellow, yellow-green, green, blue-green, etc. You can use Frank Stella and Piet Mondrain as art history examples. Research and present this information.
