4 ATTENTION TRAINERS! The Bureau of Land Management also known as the BLM has been brainstorming with ideas that will assist in managing wild horses who are on public land. Partnering with the National Academy of Sciences/National Research (NAS/NRC) an independent non-profit group that advises the government on specific issues. In 2010 the BLM asked NAS to review technical aspects of their wild horse and burro program, including science-based population estimation methods, annual herd growth rates and population control measures. The $1.5 million study begin in 2011 and the results were released on June 5, The answer: The BLM should rely more on contraception rather than roundups. However, there is still a push back on what the BLM should do about the estimated 58,150 wild horses and burros on public rangeland. This exceeded the 31, 435 number determined by the BLM to be the appropriate management level. On March 10, The Horse published an explosive article on another unique suggestion to lessen the number of wild horses on public hands: hiring experienced horse trainers to train the wild horses and help the BLM to place them in good homes. Trainers residing in 31 states will have an opportunity to submit their proposal to the BLM by a deadline of April 22. The trainer s proposals should include a description of the applicant s facility, expected feed and care costs and their horse-training experience. The BLM is looking for experienced trainers who use minimal resistance or natural horsemanship techniques to have the horse trained. In return, the BLM will reimburse the trainer a flat negotiated training fee and adoption/sales fee once the trained horse meets BLM s specific training criteria and is placed into private care. 5 The proposals will only be accepted from trainers residing in: Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin. For those trainers interested they need to go to and click on Search Public Opportunities, Under Search Criteria, select Reference Number; put in the solicitation number (L16PSoo289) and click Search. The solicitation information should appear and the form describes what to submit and where to send it. Also, for applicants who have never conducted business with the government, they must first obtain a Dun and Bradstreet number on before registering at to do business. There is no fee involved in registering with

6 Run for the Roses, ARHA Regional Show, was held at Lakeside Arena in Frankfort, Kentucky May 6 through the 8th. Competitors from as far north as New York and as far south as Florida competed for Circuit Champion Awards, High Point Awards, and Reserve High Point Awards. We also presented awards for the Longest Haul who went to Jane Moulton of New York and the Best Derby Hat, Tina Coil of Kentucky. Many new exhibitors were welcomed as they competed in their first ARHA event. Tough competition, good friends, and excellent horses were among the group.
