1 A BRIIEF HIISTORY OF OUR ASSOCIIATIION The following pages outline the history of the Georges River St George District Cricket Association. In reading through these pages please accept that we are always checking the accuracy of and adding to the records particularly those prior to WW11. Any information that assists that process is gratefully accepted. The St George Cricket Association was founded in 1898 to provide organised competition for the adults of the district and surrounds. This makes it the oldest amateur sporting body in the district. Under 19 and U/17 competitions were commenced in 1908 for junior players. For a short time, 1904 to 1906, the Association s name was changed to Illawarra Suburbs Cricket Association. The St George Cricket Umpires League was formed in 1907, the first in NSW. In 1923 the Georges River commenced competition, centred on the Mortdale and Oatley District. The Penshurst Memorial Association was originally a loose grouping of teams based around the Penshurst Memorial Hall, playing matches at Penshurst Park. In 1926 they formed an Association to formalise their competition. In the early 1930 s they started a boy s competition. In the 1930 s St George, Georges River, Penshurst and the St George Protestant Churches formed the Illawarra Suburbs Association for the conduct of Inter Association matches. This organization was for a time, up until the war, very successful, with the three District Associations refusing to affiliate with the NSW Junior Cricket Union. Almost from the commencement of the Penshurst Memorial Association, later the Penshurst District Cricket Association they and Georges River discussed amalgamation. With the Second World War both groups were having difficulty with teams and for the 1942/43 competition they combined. At the conclusion of the war in 1945 it was decided to formally amalgamate to start the George River Penshurst Cricket Association. The junior competition continued until 1958/59 when it was handed over to the St George Association. This arrangement continued until the 1967/68 season when, because the lack of junior affiliates was impacting on the long term viability of the Association, a new Georges River Penshurst Junior Association was formed. In an attempt to strengthen the competitions a combined U/16A competition was started in 1989/90 and then 14A and 12A in 1990/91. Ultimately because of declining numbers in the St George juniors a full amalgamation of the two junior bodies took place in the1992/93 season. With declining numbers and the recognition that four clubs were going to join Georges River Penshurst for the 1993/94 season St George sought an amalgamation in the Seniors. This was finalised for that season and the name changed to Georges River St George in 1995/96. For the purposes of consistency the records of the Georges River Penshurst Association were maintained after the amalgamations in both the Senior and Junior competitions and this was continued until the 2004/05 season. In order to streamline the administration of cricket in the district the amalgamation of the seniors and juniors took place for the 2005/06 season. New records have been started from this time.
