1 Alphabet and phonics mini-flashcards Contents: Plain alphabet with penmanship guidelines (1 page) Alphabet (1 page) Basic graphemes with penmanship guidelines (2 pages) Intermediate graphemes with penmanship guidelines (1 page) Vowels only (1 page) Suggestions for use Teaching phonics/the alphabet 1. Print out the letters/sounds you want to practise. Ensure that you have at least one card for each child; you may need to repeat cards if you are only practising a few. Students sit in a circle. Give each student one card and ask them to say the sound. Once students have practised the sound, look around the circle, and clearly say ah (or one of the sounds that you are practising). The students with that card hold them up. Check that they are correct, and enlist the help of classmates. Continue with other sounds. Repeat faster and faster. 2. Give each student/group a set of cards. Say the sound. Students select the correct card from in front of them, and hold it in the air for you to see. Good for a quick assessment of what they know and what needs to be revised. 3. Use for one-to-one assessment. Letter recognition: print out two copies of the set you want to practise, one for you and one for the student. Show the student a card. The student finds the same card in her pack. Listening: lay out cards on the desk. Ask student to pick out the letters as you say them. Speaking: lay out the cards, or use them as a pack and show them one at a time. Student says the letter/sound as you show the card. Spelling games Give each student/group a set of the alphabet cards, or a selection of your choice. Give students a set amount of time to rearrange the cards to form as many words as they can. One option is to ask them to write down all the words on a piece of paper so that they can use the same cards for new words. Otherwise, make sure you give them a good choice of vowels. Memory game Print out two copies of the set you want to practise for each group of 4 6 students. Glue onto coloured paper (so that children can t see through them) and cut out. Laminate. Player 1 turns over two cards and says the letter (or the sound, depending on what you are practising). If the cards match, Player 1 can keep them. If not, Player 1 turns the cards back over, leaving them in the same position, and Player 2 takes her turn. The winner is the student with the most cards at the end. Mingling game or grouping activity Print and laminate two sets of the cards, ensuring that there is the right number of pairs of cards for each student to have one half of a pair. Students take a card from a bag, keeping it secret. When all students have a card, ask them to stand and find their partner without showing anyone the card. They can do this by simply repeating the sound over and over again, or by asking Have you got B? When all partners have found each other, you can repeat it with different cards. Or use it as a pairing or grouping activity at the beginning of an exercise.
