10 A brief explanation about LED Lighting The LED Chip LED s use a specially coated silicon chip that produces a red, green and blue light when an electrical current is applied. A phosphorous coating is then applied to make a white light. The chip is then mounted in a package with a lens to diffuse the light. Cheaper quality LED chips often use a lower grade silicon with a thin or uneven layer of phosphorous coating and a poor lens that is prone to putting out a spotlight type of light or a light with a greenish hue without a good even light colour LED Driver Apart from the LED chip, the other important part of a LED light is the driver. The driver has a capacitor to make sure there is a constant voltage current applied to the chip as voltage fluctuations will quickly degrade the chip. Poor quality LED s use low quality capacitors in the drivers, which can cause light flickering that eventually burn out an end the life of the LED Even if a good chip is used, a poor driver will limit the expected 50,000-hour lifespan. Brightness of the Light We are used to measuring lights brightness by its wattage, but in reality, wattage only measures the power being used. Brightness is measured in Lumens, which is calculated, by the amount of LED chips used in one watt of power. For example a 60watt incandescent light bulb produces about 750 lumens. To cut costs, less LEDs per watt are used which has the net result of a light with reduced brightness. A good rule of thumb to quickly check if a light has a good quality chip is to check the lumens against the bulbs wattage. Good quality chips range from 85 lumens to 130 lumens per watt and are increasing in lumens with new technology. In the 60W bulb example above, a 9W LED replacement bulb using 85 lumens per watt would replace the 60W bulb (9w x 85 lm = 765lm). A poor quality 9W LED bulb may put out far less lumens depending how many chips per watt are used in the manufacturing process. The beam angle is also another important point to consider to make sure the right amount of light covers the required area.

11 Dimmable LEDs In Dimmable LED lights, the driver for the LED dimmer must be matched to the dimming controller that is being used, otherwise there may be problems such as time lag in the dimming, flickering or a limited dimmable range. There are a lot more technical measurements to determine a good quality LED but that is up to the retailer to research in order to make sure they are selling a good quality product.
