1 OT 528: OCCUPATION-BASED TREATMENT KIT Title: Reach and Grow Tic-Tac-Toe Description of activity: Reach and Grow Tic-Tac-Toe is an adapted version of the classic game of Tic-Tac-Toe. This table-top game is traditionally played via paper and pencil and requires two players. The purpose is to take turns with an opposing player and to line up three of your game piece in a line; either vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. The first player to get three in a row is considered the winner. Often times, the game will end with neither player successfully making a line; known as a draw or tie.

2 This adapted version of the game is created to be user friendly, with contrasting colors and thick, easy to hold game pieces. The game pieces, as well as the game board, have strong magnets on them to make placing the pieces on the board easier. Not only is this game designed to improve standing balance and tolerance, it also works on standing posture, bilateral upper extremity use, crossing midline, and it even incorporates cognitive planning and sequencing skills. According to The Standing Company, a Michigan company specialized in standing wheelchairs, standing for functional mobility has many benefits. These benefits include, but not limited to, improved circulation, spasticity control, release of and prevention of contractures, assist in bowel and bladder regularity, stretching of the hamstrings and other lower extremity muscles, exercise of the cardiovascular system, improved range of motion, reduction of and prevention of pressure sores, and a decreased risk of pneumonia. 3 Reach and Grow Tic-Tac-Toe is designed to be played on a table top, preferably with the patient standing. The client needs to have enough core stability to stand for a three minute period for safe mobility during functional activity. If the client is unable to stand safely for this period of time, the game can be graded for the client to play while seated. Furthermore, if the client is seated on a hard surface and completing the task at ease, they should be advanced to sitting on an inflatable vestibular disc, which is designed to activate major muscle groups and will improve their sitting stability and core strength. This, along with lower extremity stability and strength, is essential for standing. Once the client is in place in front of the board, they are to take turns with another person to try and successfully get three of their game pieces into a line; either vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. The first to do so is considered the winner. If neither player successfully completes a line with three of their game pieces, the game ends in a draw, or tie. Performance issues addressed: Reach and Grow Tic-Tac-Toe works on various cognitive and motor and praxis skills. Planning, sequencing, and direction following are all essential to playing this game. Also essential are the motor and praxis skills of standing or sitting balance, standing or sitting tolerance, bilateral upper extremity use, and occasionally the ability to cross midline. Activity modification: Ideally, this game would be played with the client in the upright standing position. If they are unable to stand, they may play the game seated. If the client is able to tolerate the seated position and displays good core strength and sitting balance, they can be placed in the seated position on an inflatable vestibular disc. This can further increase trunk stability and core strength, ultimately increasing sitting balance and tolerance. Contraindications:

4 The client should be monitored while standing to perform the activity. If they are standing and becomes tired, weak, dizzy, etc., allow them to sit and rest. Taking and documenting the client s blood pressure may be necessary. The client needs to have the cognitive ability to plan and sequence moves and follow directions. If the client has any shoulder range of motion limitations, this game should not be used.
