2 INTRODUCTION One of the most routine of day-to-day physical units, but one that causes innumerable conceptual misunderstandings, "volume" is visualised here hands-on by making cubes only out of paper. TOOLS: Ruler (1) Scissor (1) PARTS: Paper (6) Paper size needs to be greater than 14 cm on both sides 2018 Page 2 of 10

3 Precaution Handle scissor with care. Step 1 - Making Square Sheets (I) Draw a vertical line at 14cm from one end of the sheet. At 28cm from the top of the vertical line draw a perpendicular towards the 14cm. Now fold along the vertical line. Step 2 - Making Square Sheets (II) Cut the creased vertical line with the help of a ruler. Now fold along the perpendicular line drawn at the bottom initially and cut it off using a ruler. Now you're left with a 14cm x 28cm rectangle Page 3 of 10

4 Step 3 - Square Sheets Fold the rectangle laterally and cut across the creased line. This gives you two 14cm x 14cm square sheets. Repeat Step 1 to 3 for two more A4 sheets ( coloured preferably ). This way you'll have the required six 14cm x14cm square sheets. Step 4- Folding Fold the square to make two equal halves. Fold the two halves towards the middle to make it look like a cupboard. Fold laterally to divide it into two equal parts Page 4 of 10

5 Step 5-Make a parallelogram Fold the upper half towards the center to make the first triangle. Fold the lower half towards the center in the opposite direction to make the second triangle. This makes a parallelogram. Step 6-Open the upper triangle You will find a small triangle on your left open. Fold it inside Tuck the remaining portion on your right inside the left 2018 Page 5 of 10

6 Step 7-Open the lower triangle Repeat the procedures of step 6 for the lower triangle. You'll have a parallelogram with four pockets. Step 8-Flaps and Pockets Turn around Fold the triangles as flaps with a square in the middle Page 6 of 10

7 Step 9-Make 6 such modules Now you have two triangular flaps and a square with four pockets. Repeat steps 1 to 5 for the remaining sheets. Step 10- Start making the cube Take one module and place it as shown. Insert the second module's flap into the first module's pocket as shown. Insert the third module in the opposite pocket Page 7 of 10

8 Step 11- Inserting 4th module. Tuck the 4th module into the second as shown. Turn around. Erect the 4th module to 90 degrees Step 12-Appropriate tucking Do all the possible tucking. Turn around such that the cube has it's top uncovered Page 8 of 10

9 Step 13- Inserting the 5th module It should be inserted such that the cube now has it's top covered. Step 14- Insert 6th module Turn around again to have the cube's top uncovered. Insert the 6th module as shown Page 9 of 10

10 Step 15-Your cube is complete Tuck every open flap appropriately. Your cube is ready. Troubleshooting Folds are not accurate. Improper tucking. Wear and tear of paper. Observation How many more cubes of volume 125ml will be required to make a 1L cube? What is the length, breadth and height of the cube? Can you measure the above without using a ruler?
