Whitehead s Spiderhunter (tour participant Alec Gillespie) BORNEO: SABAH & SARAWAK 2 16/22 AUGUST 2017 LEADER: CHRIS KEHOE This year s Borneo tour produced a wonderful collection of Bornean and Sundaic specialities. Whitehead s Broadbill was clear winner of Bird of the Trip as we enjoyed multiple excellent encounters with this remarkable bird in the highlands of Sabah where its namesake Trogon and Spiderhunter were also seen very well along with the enigmatic Everett s Thrush and other tricky upland species such as the gorgeous Fruithunter, perky Bornean Stubtail and Red-breasted Partridge. In the lowlands we enjoyed prolonged views of the much-wanted Bornean Bristlehead at the Lower Kinabatangan where a spotlighted Bornean Ground Cuckoo was a great bonus and Storm s Storks, Jerdon s Bazas and many others showed well. Blueheaded and Black-headed Pittas gave fine views in the steamy lowlands along with the likes of hunting Bat Hawks, spotlighted Buffy Fish Owls, Large and Blyth s Frogmouths, Large Green Pigeons, Crested Jay and seven species of Hornbill. Those who stayed on for the extension to neighbouring Sarawak were rewarded with great views of all of our top targets, namely Bornean and Dulit Frogmouths, Black Oriole, Mountain Serpent Eagle, Hose s Broadbill and Grey-breasted Babbler. Hook-billed Bulbul at Klias Peatswamp, just over the border back in Sabah, was a very welcome addition to the Birdquest life list. Mammals featured prominently too with several Bornean Orang-utans seen very well, four different Leopard Cats, the weird Colugo, Sunda Slow Loris, Bornean Gibbons and Proboscis Monkeys just some of the many highlights. 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Borneo

After gathering at Sabah s Kota Kinabalu Airport around midday we were soon at nearby Lok Kawi beach where we enjoyed excellent views of today s top target, a dapper male Malaysian Plover (and a more distant female) plus a few early migrant shorebirds such as Greater and Lesser Sandplovers, Terek Sandpiper and Grey-tailed Tattler. Also here were a few Collared Kingfishers and unexpected Sunda Pygmy woodpeckers. Moving on, we explored the ricefields near Papar where many Wood Sandpipers and smaller numbers of Long-toed Stints were gathered along with numerous Intermediate Egrets, a few White-breasted Woodswallows and a White-breasted Waterhen. Chestnut and Scaly-breasted Munias were common here and we saw a few Yellow-bellied Prinias while an area of swampy grassland held Black-backed Swamphens, lots of Wandering Whistling Ducks, a Chestnut Bittern, a Lesser Coucal and an overflying White-bellied Sea Eagle. Bornean Green Magpie (Alec Gillespie) After an early start we were on our way inland towards the Crocker Range well before dawn and reached there at first light. During our al fresco breakfast at the Rafflesia Reserve we began to see some of the specialities of the Bornean highlands as Temminck s Sunbird, Black-capped White-eye and Bornean Treepies all quickly put in appearances. We took shelter during a heavy shower but it soon cleared and a little further along the road we found our first Chestnut-hooded Laughingthrushes, a couple of Sunda Laughingthrushes, Mountain Barbets, Indigo and Little Pied Flycatchers, Grey-throated Babblers and Chestnut-capped Yuhinas. Fruiting shrubs attracted Cinereous Bulbuls and shortly afterwards we were feasting on views of Black-and-crimson Orioles and a group of stunning Long-tailed Broadbills. A little further on we had brief views of a couple of Bornean Barbets and several Bornean Leafbirds and just around the corner were several Bornean Bulbuls. Rattling calls led us to a flighty Whitehead s Broadbill in a fruiting tree and most had reasonable views of this great prize. We returned to the Rafflesia Reserve to enjoy our box lunches in comfort and were thrilled to discover a quietly feeding Whitehead s Spiderhunter that gave amazingly prolonged scope views, a rare treat given this is normally a hyperactive species. We tried again for the Whitehead s Broadbill after lunch but drew a blank though we did succeed in seeing a Goldencheeked Barbet, Mountain Tailorbird and Ochraceous Bulbuls before beginning the drive to our accommodation at Kundasang for a four-night stay in the daunting shadow of Mt. Kinabalu. 2 BirdQuest Tour Report: Borneo

Our first day at Kinabalu Park began with a visit to the highest drivable point at the Timpohon gate. As it got light we watched a Bornean Whistling Thrush along the track and soon found a few Bornean Green Magpies that put on a good show. Yellow-breasted and Mountain Leaf Warblers flitted about and a fruiting bush attracted several Gold-naped Barbets for close views while Mountain Blackeyes fed in the canopy above. After admiring an Indigo Flycatcher and obliging Sunda Bush Warbler we began walking slowly down the road. It was initially rather quiet but then, in quick succession, we were watching a fantastic group of Whitehead s Broadbills and very nearby a fabulous Fruithunter. Red-breasted Partridges began calling very close to the road and we were fortunate to find a gap in the vegetation where two birds could be seen quietly feeding. Along the road near the Silau Silau Trail it was rather quiet but we enjoyed good views of a few bits and pieces before heading up to the viewpoint for our box lunches where a Blyth s Hawk Eagle showed well overhead. After lunch we resumed birding along the road with Mountain Imperial Pigeon and Little Cuckoo Dove added to our list plus a couple of Checker-throated Woodpeckers and a brief Sunda Cuckoo. Another Whitehead s Broadbill posed nicely for us before we returned to the Silau Silau Trail area where a large laughingthrush flock attracted our first Hair-crested Drongo and the much rarer Bare-headed Laughingthrush with yet another Whitehead s Broadbill also seen before we returned to our hotel at the end of a very productive day. Mountain Wren-babbler (Alec Gillespie) At first light the next morning we were birding along the road near the Silau Silau Trail where our first Eyebrowed Jungle Flycatcher appeared in the half-light along with Bornean Whistling Thrushes and others including, remarkably, two more Whitehead s Broadbills, though they were the last we saw. We managed to coax a Temminck s Babbler into showing itself and had good views of Black-sided Flowerpeckers and others before venturing along the trail where the undoubted highlight was a fine male Whitehead s Trogon. A Bornean Forktail here was very skittish and only seen by some so we decided to leave it to settle down and headed up to the Bukit Ular Trail. Two more Red-breasted Partridges here were an early highlight and we eventually heard the ultra-high-pitched calls of a Bornean Stubtail that obliged with some close views. Also seen before we returned to the nearby viewpoint for lunch where our first Snowy-browed Flycatchers and a jumpy Maroon Woodpecker. With thick cloud building up it came as little surprise when rain began to fall and we took shelter at the Timpohon Gate where a soggy Sunda Cuckoo was seen. With mist now accompanying the increasingly heavy rain we left the park and visited a small resort near Kundasang where 3 BirdQuest Tour Report: Borneo

the hoped for Pygmy White-eyes eventually put in an appearance along with a Yellow-bellied Warbler, Olivebacked and Brown-throated Sunbirds, Orange-bellied Flowerpeckers and Oriental Magpie Robins. Heavy overnight rain meant it was worth concentrating on the power station road at first light as such conditions sometimes encourage shier species onto the road surface to forage. Bornean Whistling Thrushes showed nicely but much more impressive was a fabulous pair of Everett s Thrushes that showed well for quite a while, even remaining in view after it got quite light. Along the Silau Silau Trail we had further glimpses of a Bornean Forktail but it was impossible to approach for good views without disturbing it, though a couple of Eye-browed Jungle Flycatchers were much more cooperative. After such success previously, it was rather hard to come by anything new by now, White-browed Shortwings continued to evade us and Crimson-headed Partridges, though noisy, were never within reach. The rest of the day was therefore spent enjoying repeat views of the likes of Bornean Whistlers, Grey-chinned Minivets, Bornean Treepies and Sunda Cuckooshrikes. Everett s Thrush (Alec Gillespie) With a couple of hours available before we had to move on to pastures new, we returned to Kinabalu park at first light and concentrated our attention in the vicinity of the Liwagu Restaurant where, after further overnight rain it was hoped a Bornean Forktail might be tempted out on the road. One duly did so and gave some excellent views. Some also saw a brief Crimson-headed Partridge while a White-browed Shortwing also gave a series of brief views. The rest of the morning and early afternoon was spent driving towards the Kinabatangan River, though a short roadside stop gave us our first Grey-rumped Treeswifts and Silverrumped Spinetails. We reached Gomantong Caves in time to spend several hours there and quickly made our way to the main cavern where both Mossy Nest and Black Nest Swiftlets were seen on their telltale nests while back outside our first Crested Serpent Eagle and White-crowned Shama performed well. Birding along the road near the parking area gave us the likes of Oriental Pied Hornbill plus Spectacled and Charlotte s Bulbuls until we were distracted by a young male Orang-utan that showed very well indeed, feeding quietly in a roadside tree for as long as we wished. We eventually dragged ourselves away and returned to the parking area just in time to see the first bats emerging and very soon afterwards the first of several hunting Bat Hawks appeared and put on a wonderful show. From here it was just a short drive and a five-minute boat ride to our riverside lodge at Bilit. 4 BirdQuest Tour Report: Borneo

We were in a boat and travelling downstream towards the Tennegang Tributary long before first light and reached there in darkness having enjoyed excellent views of a Buffy Fish Owl along the way. It didn t take long to get a response from a Large Frogmouth but just as we were about to go in pursuit an even greater prize, Bornean Ground Cuckoo, began calling from the opposite bank. Heading there instead we pulled up to the bank and began scanning the area as best we could in the first rays of dawn. Eventually the bird was spotted sitting on a high branch and gave several minutes of good spotlight views before dropping to the ground and walking off into the dense jungle. Once it was fully light we started seeing the likes of Whitechested Babblers, Blue-throated Bee-eaters, Wrinkled and Black Hornbills and a little while later were enjoying excellent views of the first of several Storm s Storks. Proboscis Monkeys were frequently seen in the riverside trees and a pair of Jerdon s Bazas put on a fine performance as we eventually returned towards our lodge when a Lesser Adjutant also noted. Dusky Munias, Scarlet-backed Flowerpeckers and other common species were around the lodge either side of lunch and as the temperature began to fall we were back out on the river where we enjoyed greatly improved views of Wrinkled Hornbills plus Grey-and-buff Woodpecker, Brown Barbets and others along with lots of primates Blue-eared Kingfisher (Alec Gillespie) Our destination the next morning was the narrow Menangol Tributary which we reached at first light. A calling Diard s Trogon was encouraged to show itself a couple of times as Malaysian Blue Flycatchers and Blue-eared and Stork-billed Kingfishers appeared at the forest edge. A pair of White-fronted Falconets atop a bare snag were a prized find and we enjoyed prolonged views before the characteristic wailing calls of Bornean Bristlehead s caught our ears and we rushed off in pursuit of this much-wanted species. Over the next hour or so we enjoyed a series of reasonable views of three Bristleheads as they moved through the canopy of the tallest trees but when we returned to the area later on one bird gave excellent views at eye level for a few minutes. More Jerdon s Bazas and Storms Storks were seen as we returned towards the lodge for lunch. In the evening we returned to the Tennegang Tributary where we added Rufous Woodpecker and Black-winged Flycatcher-shrike to our list plus Rubycheek Sunbirds and a stunning Whitebellied Woodpecker. We spent some time trying to persuade an uncooperative Hooded Pitta to show itself but much more obliging were four Rhinoceros Hornbills that gave some fantastic views. 5 BirdQuest Tour Report: Borneo

A final boat trip saw us back at the Tennegang Tributary well before first light where two Large Frogmouths gave reasonable spotlight views though it was difficult for everyone to see them without much shuffling of positions on the boat to achieve a suitable vantage point. As it got light we had good views of Blue-eared Barbets and Pink-necked Green Pigeons along with various Hornbills and others. It was then time to finish packing, cross the river to our waiting bus and commence the journey to the legendary Danum Valley. After changing vehicles and collecting our box lunches in Lahad Datu we were on our way into an increasingly wild jungle landscape and arrived at Borneo Rainforest Lodge in time for a little birding in the immediate vicinity with rewards in the shape of Yellow-rumped Flowerpecker, Lesser Green Leafbird and Whiskered Treeswift in the lodge garden, Bornean Orang-utan, Scaly-crowned and Sooty-capped Babblers and, for some, a brief Blue-headed Pitta along the nearby Nature Trail. During dinner a Buffy Fish Owl, Bearded Pigs and a Greater Mouse Deer were visible from our table. After dinner we set off on a very productive night drive in the lodge s truck and returned 90 minutes later having seen Sambar Deer, Leopard Cat, Red Giant Flying Squirrel, Small-toothed Palm Civet and, best of all, a Blyth s Frogmouth. Large Frogmouth (Alec Gillespie) We began our first full day at Danum Valley with a walk along the Access Road where we quickly found our first Hairy-backed and Yellow-bellied Bulbuls while both Short-tailed and Black-capped Babblers showed very well, as did a Rufous-winged Philentoma and a Spotted Fantail. Star of the show though was a stunning Blue-headed Pitta that was seen well by all. Further along the road we found a showy Helmeted Hornbill calling from a huge Mengaris Tree. Nearby, we added the likes of Brown Fulvetta, Ferruginous Babbler, Yellow-breasted Flowerpecker and, in a large flowering tree, both Spectacled and Yellow-eared Spiderhunters and a couple of Red-throated Sunbirds to our growing list. Either side of lunch we divided our time between the road and some of the shorter trails near the lodge with rewards such as Raffles s Malkoha, Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher Wreathed Hornbill, Red-throated Barbet, Rufous Piculet, Black-and-yellow Broadbill (after many previously heard only birds), Fiery Minivet, Green Iora, and Black Magpie. After dark we went in pursuit of Large Frogmouth and managed a rather brief view. A night drive after dinner gave us just a few commoner mammals which served to highlight just how well we had done the night before. After an early breakfast we set off on the trails. The birding was predictably rather slower than along the road but Horsfield s Babblers showed well and after a bit of persuasion we eventually had great views of a couple of cracking Black-crowned Pittas that circled us a couple of times. A calling Blue-banded Pitta was much less 6 BirdQuest Tour Report: Borneo

cooperative, approaching closely before sneaking away unseen. Also frustrating here was a coucal that flew across the trail but failed to emerge again which was probably Short-toed. Back at the lodge garden we added Bornean Spiderhunter to our list before heading out to the canopy walkway. Heavy rain rather hampered us here though a few previously seen species were on show during brief drier interludes, a couple of Bornean Orang-utans showed at close range and a Yellow-crowned Barbet was seen briefly but well. As we returned towards the lodge we received word that a pair of Crested Firebacks had been seen very near our rooms and after quite a long search we enjoyed wonderful views of this spectacular and much wanted species just before they settled down to roost in the trees. Crested Fireback (Alec Gillespie) The next morning the truck dropped us off at the far end of the Access Road where we watched a scarce Olive-backed Woodpecker, Greater Racket-tailed Drongo and a couple of gorgeous Green Broadbills before setting off along the Gate Trail where we tried in vain for Blue-banded Pitta once more, though a Rufousfronted Babbler was new and a few other species performed well. Just before the truck returned to collect us for lunch, a Black Eagle was seen soaring over the road. In the afternoon we focused on the Access Road and the canopy walkway with our first Large Woodshrike, Asian Fairy Bluebird and Thick-billed Flowerpecker our rewards plus great views of the delightful Grey-and-buff Woodpecker. As we returned towards the lodge we had an overdue encounter with Bushy-crested Hornbills when 20 appeared in a tree right next to us. At dusk the Large Frogmouth was seen again but the views were similarly brief and mostly of its back, while a night drive gave us a Colugo, Malay Civet and Small-toothed Palm Civet. A final few hours at Danum saw us birding along the road and up on the canopy walkway with Black-bellied Malkoha, Scarlet-rumped Trogon, Black-and-red Broadbill, Black-headed Bulbul, Rufous-crowned Babbler and Greater Green Leafbird the chief highlights. Eventually we set off back to Lahad Datu where we changed vehicles before driving through miles of oil palms to Tabin Wildlife Reserve. Birding near the lodge at Tabin in the evening was rather hampered by rain but we had great views of a Wallace s Hawk Eagle and a few other bits and pieces. After dinner it was dry so we set off on what turned out to be a very productive night drive with highlights of Red Giant Flying Squirrel, Malay Civet, Sunda Slow Loris and, some very showy Buffy Fish Owls. 7 BirdQuest Tour Report: Borneo

Early the next morning Bornean Gibbons showed well near the lodge restaurant as we boarded a truck and set off towards the Mud Volcano Trail where we found an unusually showy Crested Jay, Scarlet-rumped Trogons, Buff-necked and Checker-throated Woodpeckers and a cracking Striped Wren Babbler. At the mud volcano clearing it was rather quiet with none of the hoped-for pigeons sitting in the treetops there, though back on the road we did see a Dark-throated Oriole, our first Cream-vented Bulbul and many previously seen species. Wrinkled and Rhinoceros Hornbills (Alec Gillespie) Back at the lodge some were lucky enough to see a Blue-banded Kingfisher on the river below their rooms though it didn t linger long and never returned despite much checking. We returned to the Mud Volcano Trail which was very quiet compared to in the morning while, conversely, the clearing at the end was excellent, good numbers of pigeons were gathered in the trees allowing us to directly compare Little Green, Thickbilled Green and the rare Large Green Pigeons plus some perched Blue-crowned Hanging Parrots. Another Tabin night drive was just as enjoyable as the first with a total of three superb Leopard Cats, a Common Palm Civet, a Red Giant Flying Squirrel (actually in flight ) and our second Colugo. We began our final morning at Tabin with further views of Bornean Gibbons near the restaurant before driving along the Core Area Road where a Rufous-bellied Eagle showed well overhead. A Blue-banded Pitta approached quite close but once again never showed itself. A pair of Bornean Blue Flycatchers were a welcome surprise here and a Changeable Hawk Eagle was seen. After an early lunch we drove back to Lahad Datu and flew to Kota Kinabalu where the main tour ended. Those continuing on the Sarawak extension drove in heavy rain to Lawas, just over the border, for an overnight stay. After a very early start and a rather bumpy ride in continuing heavy rain we reached the lower section of Paya Maga around first light and just as the rain finally stopped. Bird activity was high and we were soon watching our first Streaked Bulbuls and a good selection of malkohas and barbets including Yellow-crowned and Bornean. We eventually dragged ourselves away and began hiking up towards our overnight camp. Along the way we connected with an eventually obliging Black-throated Wren Babbler and, in fruiting trees, both Scaly-breasted and Finsch s Bulbuls. After a short break and a bite to eat at the Paya Maga rest house we hiked further up the trail beyond the camp where we eventually tracked down a smart Black Oriole for good scope views. Nearby, a Bornean Banded Pitta began calling and after some encouragement it gave 8 BirdQuest Tour Report: Borneo

stellar views sitting in the open on a fallen log. We stayed out till after dark but though a Bornean Frogmouth called briefly it never showed itself. A pre-dawn attempt for Bornean Frogmouth came to nothing but we did see another Black Oriole as we returned to camp for breakfast. The rest of the morning was spent along various trails around the camp where the undoubted highlight was a good view of a male Hose s Broadbill while an Eye-browed Wrenbabbler, a Rufous-chested Flycatcher and a pair of Dayak Hill Blue Flycatchers were also notable and out first Chestnut-backed Scimitar-babbler was seen after a few earlier heard-only birds. After lunch we made our way back downhill, birding was rather slow in the heat of early afternoon so our walk was greatly enlivened by the appearance of a superb Blue-banded Pitta that eventually showed quite well. Once we met up with our vehicle, that had been stuck in mud, we returned to Lawas for an overnight stay and a nice hot shower. After a leisurely breakfast we drove the short distance to Lawas Airport where our 30-minute flight to Bakalalan was on time and we were soon settling into our comfortable homestay accommodation there. After a bite to eat we drove high into the hills above the village where a calling Mountain Serpent Eagle showed quite well and we also enjoyed views of Bare-headed Laughingthrushes, several each of Bornean and Mountain Barbets and our first, overdue, Blyth s Shrike Babblers. A calling Rail-babbler above the village refused to show itself, despite a lengthy effort. As dusk approached we drove to a site below the village where Malaysian-eared Nightjars called distantly and, after a rather tense wait, we eventually had a calling Dulit Frogmouth in the spotlight for excellent views. A pre-dawn attempt for Bornean Frogmouth left us empty-handed while a series of lengthy vigils for the Railbabbler heard yesterday was similarly unproductive, the bird calling rather briefly at dawn but not subsequently. During the course of the day we amassed a respectable list of species, scarcest of which was a Rufous-tailed Jungle Flycatcher. Also noted today were the likes of Crimson-winged Woodpeckers, Crested Serpent Eagle, many Thick-billed Green Pigeons, Mountain Imperial Pigeons, Wreathed Hornbills and a good selection of upland barbets and bulbuls. As darkness fell we tried again for Bornean Frogmouth which resulted in splendid views in the spotlight. Bornean Leafbird and Mountain Barbet (Chris Kehoe) 9 BirdQuest Tour Report: Borneo

With our flight back to Lawas not until mid-morning we birded along the road above Bakalalan for a few hours and found some excellent birds. Both Whitehead s and Hose s Broadbill were seen briefly, the latter almost flying between our legs at one point, while additions to our list came in the shape of Orange-breasted Trogon, Yellow-vented Flowerpecker and Grey-breasted Spiderhunter with Scaly-breasted, Bornean and Streaked Bulbuls all seen well along with Bornean Leafbirds and Mountain Barbets. On arrival at Lawas a vehicle was waiting to take us back across the border into Sabah where, after a bite to eat, we dropped off our bags at our hotel in Beaufort and set off to nearby Klias Peatswamp. Highlights this afternoon included some stunning Scarlet-breasted Flowerpeckers and Red-crowned Barbets while the supporting cast included Banded Woodpecker, Red-naped Trogon and Chestnut-rumped Babbler though a Reddish Scops Owl calling after dark never obliged despite an extended try for it. We returned to Klias at first light, with several Large-tailed Nightjars in the headlights as we approached. We were soon watching a smart Red-naped Trogon from the boardwalk but had to work hard for our other targets here. Eventually though, we connected with a pair of furtive and quiet Hook-billed Bulbuls that showed quite well for a few minutes and not long afterwards a rather obliging Grey-breasted Babbler was on view. Well satisfied with this haul and with the temperature and humidity rising by the minute, we departed and began the journey north towards Kota Kinabalu. A couple of short stops on the way to the airport, where the extension ended in the afternoon, added Red-necked Stint, Little Tern and Pacific Golden Plover to our list.
