Large Frogmouth at Danum Valley (Mike Galtry) BORNEO APRIL 2015 LEADER: CHRIS KEHOE Our recent tour to Borneo produced an outstanding selection of Bornean and Sundaic endemics plus a host of other choice birds and mammals. After an afternoon near Kota Kinabalu, where we enjoyed fine views of a pair of Malaysian Plovers and several open country species we wouldn t see again, we set off into the highlands for almost a week. This endemic rich area gave us a numerous highlights including the famous Whitehead s trio - Trogon, Broadbill and Spiderhunter - plus the likes of Fruithunter, Bornean Green Magpie, Mountain and Bornean Barbets, Bornean Leafbird, Mountain Wren Babbler, Bornean Stubtail, both Redbreasted and Crimson-headed Partridges, Bornean Forktail, Mountain Blackeye and Blue-banded Pitta. The riverine forest of the Lower Kinabatangan area produced a whole new set of birds such as several Storm s Storks, White-fronted Falconets, Wallace s Hawk Eagles, Bat Hawks, White-crowned and Rhinoceros Hornbills (two of eight species of hornbill seen on the tour), Hooded Pitta, numerous Proboscis Monkeys and our first Orang-utans. The remainder of the tour was spent at two fabulous lowland forest reserves, Tabin and the legendary Danum Valley. Amongst a wealth of other species notable finds were Bornean Bristleheads, Bornean Crested Firebacks, Blue-headed and Black-crowned Pittas, Bornean Wren-Babbler, Helmeted Hornbills, Buffy Fish Owls and both Large and Gould s Frogmouths. Mammals in this area included several Leopard Cats, Flying Squirrels, a Colugo and some very obliging Bornean Gibbons. Apart from a few sharp showers we enjoyed fine weather during the tour and the logistics all ran very smoothly. 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Borneo

Having assembled at Kota Kinabalu airport around noon we soon set off for an afternoon of open country birding. First stop was at nearby Lok Kawi beach where we soon found an obliging pair of declining Malaysian Plovers while other shorebirds gathered at the high tide roost included several Pacific Golden Plovers, Grey Plover, Lesser and Greater Sandplovers, Kentish Plovers and Terek Sandpipers. On a distant rocky island a dark morph Pacific Reef Egret was briefly on view. A little under an hour later we reach the extensive ricefields near Papar but with an ongoing drought in progress there was little water to be seen. We took a walk along a quiet side road, picking up some commoner open country species such as Whitebreasted Wood Swallows, Zebra and Spotted Doves and Ashy Tailorbird but the highlight here was a nesting pair of smart little Sunda Pygmy Woodpeckers. We then retraced our steps and eventually found a back road that gave us views over an area of damp paddies. Wood Sandpipers were in evidence here along with several Long-toed Stints, a couple of Black-winged Stilts and singles of Greenshank and Oriental Pratincole. Purple Swamphen and White-breasted Waterhens crept about and overhead wires held a remarkable gathering of locally scarce but currently unidentifiable Sand or Pale Martins. Early the next morning we were on our way inland to the hill forest of the Crocker Range where we arrived at first light. As we ate our picnic breakfast at the roadside birds gradually began to appear nearby with an unexpected Long-tailed Broadbill, a very scarce species in Borneo, an early highlight amongst the Chestnutcrested Yuhinas and Chestnut-hooded Laughingthrushes that fed in fruiting bushes nearby. Soon afterwards a Whitehead s Spiderhunter that flew in and perched briefly, though long enough for some to have scope views, was the only one we saw. It didn t take very long to locate our first Mountain Barbet though our remaining top targets, Bornean Bulbul, Bornean Leafbird and Bornean Barbet took longer to connect with but we eventually had good views of them all. Further highlights here included a Narcissus Flycatcher, a surprise Orange-bellied Trogon (another Bornean scarcity), a skulking Temminck's Babbler, Black-capped Whiteeyes, Bornean Forktails feeding at the roadside and Grey-chinned Minivets. After lunch we drove to Kinabalu Park which we reached in time for a couple of hours birding along the road opposite the upper Silau Silau, undoubted highlight here was a fabulous pair of Whitehead's Trogons, a fine end to a splendid first day. Bornean Green Magpie at Kinabalu Park and Long-tailed Broadbill at the Crocker Range (Mike Galtry) Our first full day at Kinabalu Park began with a visit to the Timpohon Gate, the highest drivable point on the mountain. A brief Fruithunter seen in the half-light was missed by most but not so the Bornean Whistling Thrushes bouncing along the trail or the Indigo Flycatchers, Bornean Whistlers and Golden-naped Barbets in nearby trees and bushes. Some had glimpses of a fly-by Whitehead s Broadbill while Bornean Swiftlets wheeled around overhead as our first Bornean Treepie appeared along with some showy Mountain Leaf Warblers. Walking down the road for a while we were pleased to see migrant Mugimaki Flycatchers and a 2 BirdQuest Tour Report: Borneo

couple of Mountain Blackeyes plus a very obliging Sunda Bush Warbler. At the scenic viewpoint we lingered for a while seeing a soaring Blyth s Hawk Eagle and our first Black-sided Flowerpecker. At the top of the Kiau View Trail a Mountain Wren-babbler called and called and although it put in a couple of brief appearances never really gave itself up fully. After a picnic lunch we explored the Bukit Ular Trail but it was extremely quiet there. Switching to the Silau Silau Trail it became rather misty so that when we found a Whitehead s Broadbill up in the canopy the views were rather disappointing in the gloom. Soon afterwards a couple of people had brief views of a Crimson-headed Partridge on the trail ahead before it scuttled off into dense cover. We returned to the road above the trail hoping that the broadbill may reappear but instead found Bornean Green Magpies, Velvet-fronted Nuthatches, a Maroon Woodpecker and a White-browed Shortwing. Indigo Flycatcher at Kinabalu Park (Chris Kehoe) The next morning, after a short time at the Timpohon Gate, we set off up the Summit Trail in pursuit of Friendly Bush Warbler but returned empty-handed four hours later having neither seen or heard our quarry, though a Sunda Cuckoo was seen briefly a couple of times and several previously seen species showed well including a few Mountain Blackeyes, Yellow-breasted and Mountain Leaf Warblers, White-throated Fantails, Chestnut-hooded and Sunda Laughingthrushes and Blyth s Shrike-babblers. The afternoon was spent exploring the Silau Silau Trail and nearby areas, a male Whitehead s Trogon was seen very well but it was generally rather uneventful as far as new birds were concerned. However, late in the day a splendid male Fruithunter appeared and gave a series of good views despite the rapidly fading light. We began the next day at the Bukit Ular Trail where we eventually managed to persuade a small group of Red-breasted Partridges to show themselves. An extended dual with an intermittently calling Bornean Stubtail led to some people seeing it quite well while a stunning Whitehead's Broadbill appeared briefly and both White-browed Shortwing and Snowy-browed Flycatcher were seen. Continuing along the trail a couple of Crimson-headed Partridges again put in a brief appearance ahead of us. Back out on the road we scanned about from the viewpoint where we had good views of a pair of Pale-faced Bulbuls and couple of Mountain Tailorbirds. As we were planning to visit an area outside the park to look for Pygmy Ibons we had a 3 BirdQuest Tour Report: Borneo

sit down lunch at a nearby restaurant and as luck would have it a Pygmy Ibon was found with a group of Chestnut-crested Yuhinas in a small tree near the car park there. Back at the Kinabalu Park we explored the lower sections once more but despite much leg work little was seen until late in the evening when a pair of Mountain Wren-babblers were persuaded to show themselves in a roadside gully where a White-browed Shortwing also performed quite well. Black-capped White-eye and Sunda Bush Warbler at Kinabalu Park (Mike Galtry) The view from the Timpohon Gate (Mike Galtry) The whole of the next day was spent at Poring where we tackled the Langanan Waterfall Trail above the hot spring. As it was our first day in lower elevation forest several new species were found including Red-naped Trogon, Buff-vented, Black-headed, Spectacled, Grey-cheeked and Hairy-backed Bulbuls, Raffles s 4 BirdQuest Tour Report: Borneo

Malkohas, White-crowned Shamas, Dusky Munias, Fluffy-backed Tit-babblers, Dark-necked Tailorbirds, Olive Backed and Maroon Woodpeckers, Yellow-rumped Flowerpecker and Chestnut-backed Scimitar Babblers. Close to the end of the trail an extended dual eventually resulted in good views for most of a furtive Blue-banded Pitta. A final couple of hours in Kinabalu Park saw us birding along the road near the Silau Silau Trail. A pair of Whitehead s Trogons were again the highlight but we enjoyed final views of several other upland species such as Black-sided Flowerpeckers, Mountain Imperial Pigeons and Little Cuckoo-Doves before departing for the lowlands. By mid-afternoon we were at Gomantong Caves where we quickly made our way to the main cavern where it took just a few minutes to locate the tell-tale nests of three Swiftlet species that are effectively impossible to identify with real confidence in any other context: Edible Nest Swiftlets on their pure white nests, Mossy Nest Swiftlets on their moss clad nests and Black Nest Swiftlets that use feathers in their nest construction. Heading back towards the reserve car park we had close views of a mother and two year old Orang-utan. After a short walk along the road near the visitor centre, where Black Hornbills, Violet Cuckoo, Maroon-breasted Philentoma and Buff-rumped Woodpecker were seen, we took up positions to wait for the exodus of bats from the caves. Rufous-bellied and Wallace s Hawk Eagles and a Peregrine held our attention until the bats eventually emerged and up to four marauding Bat Hawks put on a good show. A short drive and a few minutes by boat delivered us to our next base at Bilit Rainforest Lodge. Bornean Orang-utan at Gomantong (Chris Kehoe) A little before first light we were aboard a boat and travelling along the Kinabatangan River towards the Menangol Tributary. Birds seen before we reached there included a perched Bat Hawk and Wallace s Hawk Eagles, our first Wrinkled Hornbills, numerous Oriental Pied and a couple of Black Hornbills and lots of Green Imperial Pigeons. Our first Proboscis Monkeys were seen very well too before we entered the quieter backwater where we spent three hours slowly cruising along and amassing a fine selection of birds such as several White-chested Babblers, Malaysian Blue Flycatchers, Square-tailed Drongo Cuckoo, Chestnutbreasted Malkoha, Diard s and Scarlet-rumped Trogons, Lesser Fish Eagle, White-crowned Hornbills, Greyand-buff and White-bellied Woodpeckers and Dark-throated Orioles. The journey back to the lodge was enlivened by the appearance of a couple of soaring Storm s Storks. Around the lodge during our midday 5 BirdQuest Tour Report: Borneo

break we found Little Spiderhunter, Bornean Brown Barbets, Scarlet-backed Flowerpeckers and others before returning to the river and exploring the Tennegang Tributary until dusk. As the evening wore on Proboscis Monkeys became more and more prominent while avian highlights included Grey-headed Fish Eagle, a showy Hooded Pitta, our first Rhinoceros Hornbill, Little and Pink-necked Green Pigeons, Yellow Bitterns and some very obliging nestbuilding Black-and-red Broadbills. Dawn at the Lower Kinabatangan (Mike Galtry) Wrinkled Hornbill and Rhinoceros Hornbill at the Kinabatangan (Mike Galtry) The next day we followed a similar programme, enjoying improved views of several species plus new ones including Lesser Adjutant Stork, Changeable Hawk Eagle, Crested Goshawk, White-bellied Sea Eagle, 6 BirdQuest Tour Report: Borneo

White-fronted Falconet, Rufous Piculet, Bornean Black Magpie, Yellow-bellied Prinias (of the distinctive local race) and Chestnut-winged Babblers. A final short river cruise at the Tennegang Tributary gave us another Hooded Pitta but a calling Bornean Ground Cuckoo (the only one we heard) thwarted us by remaining behind a wall of thick vegetation despite coming quite close at times. As we returned towards the lodge a raptor in a riverside tree attracted attention, flew off before giving definitive views but photographs confirm it was, as suspected, a Jerdon s Baza. Nearby a diminutive White-fronted Falconet was perched. By midday we were in Lahad Datu where, after lunch, we set off to Tabin Wildlife Reserve for a two night stay. After dropping off our bags, and admiring a family group of Bornean Gibbons right next to our rooms, we visited the Mud Volcano Trail, seeing Thick-billed Green Pigeons, Bushy-crested Hornbills, two superb Helmeted Hornbills, Green Ioras, Ferruginous Babbler, Asian Fairy Bluebirds, Grey-streaked Flycatcher, White-bellied Munias and others. As we returned towards the road a Blue-headed Pitta called several time and approached quite closely but never came into view; not so a vocal Striped Wren-Babbler that posed nicely at close range. A night drive after dinner produced a fine selection of mammals; two delightful Leopard Cats were most popular but also seen were Malay Civet and both Red Giant and Black Flying Squirrels. Sunda Blue Flycatcher and Bornean Gibbon at Tabin (Mike Galtry) The next morning we returned to the Mud Volcano Trail for a very productive visit that gave us numerous new species including several scarcities we wouldn t see again. A Rufous-tailed Shama gave a series of good views and a fine selection of Babblers were found, including Horsfield s, Moustached, Rufous-crowned and Scaly-crowned, while a Pale Blue Flycatcher was another surprise and a smart male Sunda Blue Flycatcher gave excellent views. It was a good morning for woodpeckers too with Buff-necked and Banded Woodpecker plus a Grey-capped Pygmy Woodpecker all added to out list. Birds around the lodge during our lunch break included a female Blue-banded Kingfisher on the river. In the afternoon we concentrated on the road beyond the mud volcano and were quickly rewarded with a rufous-fronted Babbler, Van Hasselt s Sunbird and Rufous-tailed Tailorbird while a White-bellied Woodpecker showed well and a small troop of uncommon Hose s Langurs were a surprise find. A Black-bellied Malkoha was seen by some before we spent quite a while trying to coax two Black-crowned Pittas into view, though in the end just one person got lucky. Our first Bronzed Drongo and Dark-sided Flycatchers were more obliging however and as dusk descended we went in search of nocturnal species and were rewarded with two excellent Buffy Fish Owls, two Common Palm Civets and a Colugo. A final visit to the Mud Volcano Trail the next morning produced our first Brown-backed Needletail while noisy Banded Broadbills were a little more obliging than previously. We had very good views of a Diard s Trogon, a Great Slaty Woodpecker flew by and we finally got some perched views of Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot after previously seeing many flying blips. In addition, Fiery Minivets showed quite well, three different Arctic Warblers were found and a Square-tailed Drongo Cuckoo posed nicely. After lunch we returned to Lahad Datu where we transferred into different vehicles for the three hour drive to Danum Valley, a journey 7 BirdQuest Tour Report: Borneo

enlivened by the appearance of a mature male Orang-utan in a fruiting tree and a roadside Crested Fireback close to the lodge. After dinner, during which a young Brown Wood Owl was visible from our table, we went on an hour long night drive that produced another lovely little Leopard Cat. Birding at the mud volcano at Tabin (Mike Galtry) Diard s Trogon and Striped Wren-Babbler at Tabin (Mike Galtry) Our first full day at Danum began with a visit to the Segama Trail where local guides had recently found a nesting Large Frogmouth and we had excellent views of a bird sitting on its nest right above the trail Happy with this we quickly made our way to the Access Road where we lingered for a couple of hours in the hope that Bornean Bristleheads might appear. In the event none was seen though one was heard calling distantly 8 BirdQuest Tour Report: Borneo

at one point. Nevertheless, several other new birds were found including Red-billed Malkoha, Large Woodshrikes, Rufous-winged Philentomas and Chestnut-rumped Babbler while numerous previously seen species were seen again. We returned to the lodge along the Hornbill Trail where a Black-throated Wren- Babbler called distantly but refused to approach though a scarce Spotted Fantail was much more cooperative. Returning to the trails after lunch we found a showy female Bornean Blue Flycatcher but it was otherwise rather quiet. Near the canopy walkway we lingered again on the road hoping for Bristleheads but instead saw a pair of Wreathed Hornbills flying past and had scope views of a singing Red-throated Sunbird and a few other bits and pieces. At dusk at least eight Bornean Crested Fireback emerged from the forest and began feeding next to our rooms before roosting in the trees above. During dinner the Brown Wood Owl made a return visit. Spotted Fantail and Bornean Crested Fireback at Danum Valley (Mike Galtry) We spent the next morning along the Access Road and Hornbill Trail. Rufous-crowned Babblers gave greatly improved views at the roadside before a Black-crowned Pitta began calling a short distance into the forest. We went in pursuit and eventually had some fine views of at least one individual. In the distance a Blueheaded Pitta was also heard and one person got a brief view of this female bird before it fell silent an disappeared. The Hornbill Trail gave us both Diard s and Scarlet-rumped Trogons and a pair of Sunda Blue Flycatchers. During the lunch break one lucky person saw a Cinnamon-rumped Trogon near the lodge and while searching for it we found a small flock of Dusky Broadbills. Along the river two Great-billed Herons were on view while nearby both of the Large Frogmouths were present at their nest. Later on we returned once more to the canopy walkway area and began another vigil for Bristleheads. After a while we received a radio message that that a group of Bristleheads had just appeared at the walkway itself so we hastened there and had a series of good views before they moved off in the direction we had just come from. Returning to the road we quickly relocated the Bristleheads and managed some good scope views. In the same general area a couple of Red-throated Barbets and a Golden-whiskered Barbet were found. After dinner the undoubted highlight of a night drive was a Gould s Frogmouth near the roadside but a Thomas s Flying Squirrel and a Common Palm Civet were also seen. Our final full day at Danum commenced with birding in the immediate vicinity of the lodge where Little, Spectacled and Bornean Spiderhunters all visited the flowering shrubs as Whiskered Treeswifts and Bluethroated Bee-eaters perched overhead and our only Greater Green Leafbirds were seen. We then set off onto the trail system where an early highlight, albeit rather briefly seen, was a pair of Chestnut-naped Forktails along a small stream. in the distance a Bornean Wren-Babbler was heard calling and we set off in pursuit, eventually enjoying several brief views. A couple of small mixed species flocks contained nothing new, though we had some nice views of previously seen species and a couple of Pygmy Ibons were found. Soon afterwards we bumped into a splendid male Blue-headed Pitta, it took a while for everyone to get a satisfactory view but eventually the bird settled down in one spot and preened for a while as we looked on 9 BirdQuest Tour Report: Borneo

admiringly. Later in the day a Rufous-bellied Hawk Eagle was seen and after previous brief fly-bys most finally had perched views of Rufous-backed Kingfisher. Long before dusk several Red Giant Flying Squirrels became active and gave some great views. Red Giant Flying Squirrel and Brown Wood Owl at Danum Valley (Mike Galtry) With most of the morning available before we had to depart for Lahad Datu we concentrated our efforts in the canopy walkway area with our only, somewhat overdue, Short-tailed Babbler seen en route to there. Scarlet Minivets, Green Ioras, Lesser Cuckooshrike, Spectacled Spiderhunter and Grey-capped Pygmy Woodpecker appeared at the walkway and showed well and we had greatly improved views of Goldenwhiskered Barbets too before returning to the lodge for an early lunch. On the drive out of Danum Valley some saw a White-crowned Forktail on the road but the final addition to our list came at Lahad Datu airport, where the tour ended, when a couple of Paddyfield Pipits were noted. BIRD OF THE TRIP RESULTS A total of 15 species received votes but the top five were: 1st: Blue-headed Pitta 19 points =2nd: Rhinoceros Hornbill 15 points =2nd: Black-crowned Pitta 15 points 4th: Large Frogmouth 12 points =5th: Bornean Bristlehead 5 points =5th: Blue-banded Pitta 5 points =5th: Long-tailed Broadbill 5 points =5th: Fruithunter 5 points 10 BirdQuest Tour Report: Borneo
