1 Est The purpose of this organization is to develop, promote the proper breeding, humane treatment, and care of birds of all kinds and varieties. To reproduce, exchange, publish and distribute information on aviculture which will tend to increase the knowledge of its members. To cooperate with other organizations and governmental agencies toward the establishment of practices for improved breeding, handling and treatment of all birds. President s Message We had a very important meeting in March to discuss bird club activities and sales. It was the kind of meeting that required voting on several issues and the attendance was disappointing. Please try to attend the monthly meetings so you can express your opinions and help us to make decisions. Your input is essential to the workings of our club and we want to make decisions based on the the whole membership's decision, not just the desires of a few. Not to mention,...we love to see you at the meetings!! The social aspect of our group is very important. We will be having some very interesting speakers this year and that alone should make you "bird lovers" want to come to each and every meeting!! Come one, come all!! And bring a friend! Sharon Tony Guiomar Our Long time Member Tony Guiomar has passed. Tony has been a member since He was made an Honorary member in Tony was a Judge at the 2017 Show. He will surely be missed More on Page 4 No Seed Run in April. Teri Applegate will be out of town. However, if you call her now she can have it for you Tuesday at the Seed Factory Private Message for: Here is your for
2 Meeting Minutes, March 2018 Following our early business discussion, we totaled only 15 members this month. After the buffet, Sharon called us to order. Bruce gave us the news that we continue to be more than solvent. He also stresses the need for prior approval for any purchases made for the club. Reimbursement will occur only for approved expenses with accompanying receipts. Anyone who has received club business cards from Terese needs to be aware that the schedules for meeting dates on the back are inaccurate for the months of April and July and should be corrected by the user before distributing. No business cards will be made in future without expressed request. We then had an open discussion regarding fees to be charged to members who exhibit at the marts and show. No final decision was made. We also discussed and voted to restrict all merchandise sold at the marts to be only bird-related items. We also voted on whether or not to increase the number of bird marts annually to four. For this year only, the vote was in the affirmative. Due to the large number of children attending it was suggested we develop a special area for them with bird crafts and activities. Terese and Julie declined help with advertising, saying they will continue as is in Facebook and Craigslist list. We still need insurance coverage and our attempt to use the liability forms in February was not successful. Some members would like to develop outreach programs for young people in 4-H programs and schools. This needs suggestions and work from anyone interested. There was a raffle, of course, then we departed. We have some interesting speakers scheduled in the following months, as well as some new ideas for the club. Please join us as an active member. Hope to see you in April. Paulette April Speaker, Blue Wrigley Blue Wrigley, Australian Bird Keeping, will be our speaker for April! Blue has been an avid aviculturist for over 64 years! Being from Australia he ended up specializing in Australian Birds, breeding all types of Grass Parakeets including Rosellas, Princess of Wales, Red Rumps, Bourkes, and Turquoisines, for some, although over the years he s also raised finches, exotic fruit Doves, some Pheasants and Australian King Parrots which were the largest birds he s had. It s always enjoyable to listen to Blue for he is quite a character, has a delightful accent and will give his experienced opinion on any questions asked. He s been a member & officer of many bird clubs such as Foothill Bird Fanciers, Amador Bird Club, Capitol City Bird Society and more.!
3 MEMBERS - Remember to bring raffle prizes! This is one of our favorite parts of the meetings. World's Oldest Known Bird Mom Hatches New Chick Submitted by Jennifer Hayes Wisdom is a 67-year-old Laysan albatross a large seabird of the North Pacific. She's the world's oldest known breeding bird in the wild, and she's still going strong. Earlier this month, to international celebration, she hatched her newest chick. Wisdom mates, nests and raises her young at the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge at Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument near Hawaii. She and more than 3 million other seabirds depend on this protected land for their survival.
4 Terry Ryan What s Happening in Your Aviary This Month? I have 3 Bourke's, a Rosie and 2 normals, that fledged last week and another nest box with 2 in it! Terese Davis I m just finishing off a clutch of four beautiful lovebird babies. They are so sweet and are almost ready to go home. One is gone to a family who knows how to hand feed. These babies are almost weaned and we re leaving for Oregon on Friday the 13th. Two have been promised and one remains. Call me Art Pacheco I have already 85 baby canaries. And I just picked up my friend, Tony Guimire s birds. He passed away this month and I do this for him. So if you want some canaries, call me. Jose Aguila May Speaker Our May speaker, Jose Aguilas, lives in our area and is active in pigeon racing and knowledgeable about these beautiful, intelligent birds. Don t forget the Purple Heart awarded to a pigeon in WWII and their incredible homing abilities to mention only a few of their attributes. They are everywhere we are and there is so much to learn about them. Submitted by Paulette Boorack Tony Guiomar Memories I was born & raised in the Azores on the island of San Miguel. I came to the United States in 1964 & became a citizen 5 years later. The greater part of those years in the United States has been spent in Calif. I retired from the meat industry in April of 2006 after working for the same company for 31 years. I have been interested in birds my entire life but I started raising birds in earnest in the late nineteen seventies. In 1984 I attended my first National Cage Bird Show in San Diego. I have attended pretty much every show since that time. I began stewarding approximately 30 years ago at the Nationals. In addition I have judged at several shows from Washington State to Southern California, including a few on the East Coast. My special interests are with "Old Varieties and Type Canaries" with Parisians being the specialty. I have won hundreds of trophies, ribbons & a Kellogg Award and consider my birds to be one of my greatest joys. I belong to a great many bird clubs & have done so for many years. I consider it a privilege to be asked to judge in a bird show as it demonstrates trust by the collective members of that club in my knowledge of birds. Tony Guiomar Judge
