1 Tableau Report Bird strikes have become a reoccurring problem for aircrafts in the most recent years. A bird strike is defined as a collision between a bird and an aircraft which is in flight or on a takeoff or landing roll. This leads to minor to extraordinary damages to an aircraft, which will take a considerable amount of money to repair those damages in terms of airport operations. The objective of this report is to find trends and or notice that could help airports determine where these bird strikes happen, where birds appear the most and how much it costs to repair those damages depending on that state. The data used for this report will be data from the years of 2010 to The starting focus will be location. In the United States, which states have had the most amount of birds seen between the years of 2010 and 2014? The data will be represented as a symbol map in Figure 1. In the symbol map, the magnitude of the number of bird sightings in represented by how big the circle is. According the data below, using the top 15 states with the most bird sighting, it appears that the most bird sightings are seen in Texas with 3,300, California with 3,102, and Florida with 2,950. Figure 2, the box and whisker plot, represents the three states mentioned earlier as outliers, meaning that these three states defer from the rest of the 12 states listed. The purpose of this figure is to see how well the data between states are compared. There are significantly more birds seen in these three states than any other state listed from Figure 1. It is safe to say that out of the top 15 states for most bird sightings, most birds have been seen on the eastern region of the United States from 2010 to 2014 combined.

2 The next focus will be on the top 15 states with the most bird sightings based on the number of birds structed by size and year. In Figure 3, per the data, there were more small birds struck every year from 2010 to 2014 where there was only one bird involved. This graph was developed by breaking down size of birds structed by year. It was broken down by color referring to how many birds were structed at once. In 2010, the number of single instances involving one bird stuck was 426. In 2011, that number increased to 456 and decreased the next three following years. Single instances involving one bird also led in every year for medium sized (largest amount in 2010 with 170) and large birds (largest amount in 2010 with 80. Small birds also came in first with the most birds struck ranging from two to ten in a single instance with the most in 2011 (60).

3 In Figure 4, the number of birds stuck are broken down to percentages from 2010 to 2014 combined. Once again, the U.S states used for this table are the top 15 states that have the most bird sightings. The percentages are broken down by the total amount of birds struck in single instances (1, 2-10, ). The state of New York leads the list with the most bird strikes involving one bird from its overall total percentage with 95.58%. In terms of volume Florida still has the most single birds struck, but also represents 86.33% of the state s overall total. This is valid because of the darker color Florida has compared to the other states. Florida has had the most bird strikes from 2010 to 2014 combined. Ohio has had the most instance of bird strikes with a percentage of 7.14% in its state, more than any other state referring to their total. The next area of focus will be airport damage based on each state. Figure 5 will be sorted by the amount of damage along with how many airports are located within that state. The airports concluded in the total could be airports that are for public use, private use, or for military. In Figure 5, it is shown that Florida has the most amount of cost repairs from 2010 to 2014 with $26,954,936.00, which is more than any other state listed in the top 15 states where birds are seen. California comes in second place in terms of most cost repairs, but have the most airports (89) out of all the states listed. Colorado ties with Kentucky for second to last in terms of most airports with 20, but Colorado comes in third most cost reapirs. Colorado is an interesting one because of its lack of airports compared to the other states, yet it ranks third in terms of total cost

4 repairs. More analysis is necessary to see the basis behind this matter. In Figure 6, It shows that Denver International Airport in Colorado has the most amount repair costs out of the top 15 states with the most bird sightings. Their total turns out to be $17,927, It is obvious that the repair costs from this airport makes up the majority of all repair costs of all airports in the state of Colorado. Orlando Sanford International Airport in Florida comes in at second with $9,407, It appears that there isn t a close second in terms of repair costs.

5 In Figure 7, the table shows the total whole number and total percentages of pilots warned of Bird/Wildlife based on birds struck using the count function. It will be broken down by Yes (Y) or No (N) It is filtered by the top 15 states where birds are sighted from 2010 through Per the table, Kentucky has the highest percentage of most structed birds without warning of bird/wildlife based on the total amount of birds struct in that state. Texas has the highest amount of birds structed out of all states listed. 49% of the time pilots in Texas are warned about bird/wildlife. Hawaii has the highest percentage of birds strikes after being warned with a percentage of 74% based on their total amount of strikes in the state. This chart gives insight on how often bird/wild life is reported in these states. It basically shows that in some areas it doesn t matter if the pilot was warned beforehand. Statistics show that in states such as Missouri, New York, Hawaii, and Ohio run into bird problems more often than other states based on their total amount. The main ideas of this report were to help airports determine where these bird strikes happen, where birds appear the most and how much it costs to repair those damages depending on that state. The analysis in this report was substantial enough to ask our questions. Per the data, birds are seen most in Texas, California, and Florida in that order. Out of the top 15, these three states are considered outliers compared to the other 12 states, meaning that the amount of birds seen in those states a very large. Small birds are structed the most throughout every year from 2010-

6 2014 where it involves one bird and when it involves two to ten birds. It is also known that the state of New York leads the list with the most bird strikes involving one bird from its overall total percentage while in terms of volume Florida still has the most single birds struck, but also represents 86% of the state s overall total. Florida has the most amount of cost repairs from 2010 to 2014 with $26,954,936.00, which is more than any other state listed in the top 15 states where birds are seen while California comes in second place for total repair cost and leads in the number of airports (89). Another interesting note is that Colorado comes in second to last for the amount of airports but come in third for total repair costs. This could mean that DIA is the largest and most productive airport in Colorado. Per the table, Kentucky has the highest percentage of most structed birds without warning of bird/wildlife based on the total amount of birds struct in that state. As stated earlier, in some areas it doesn t matter if the pilot was warned beforehand. Many things can be learned from this data, such as which places had most bird sighted by the pilot while flying, where planes get structed by birds the most, and if they were warned beforehand
