5 PLACES TO GO... CALIFORNIA NATURE CONSERVANCY WALK-ON PRESERVES THERE ARE THREE WALK-ON PRESERVES IN THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA. ALL OF THEM ARE OPEN FROM SUNRISE TO SUNSET. NO APPOINT- MENTS ARE NECESSARY. COACHELLA VALLEY PRESERVE (Riverside County) A combination of sand dunes, mesas, and six fan palm oases. Thousand Palms Oasis is the heart. Located ten miles east of Palm Springs in the Colorado Desert. DIRECTIONS: From I-10 take Ramon Road exit and drive east to Thousand Palms Canyon Drive, turn left (north), drive two miles to preserve entrance on left. (760) BIG MORONGO CANYON PRESERVE (San Bernardino County) Cottonwood and willow oasis in high desert; perennial springs; mecca for birds. Located north of Palm Springs near the town of Morongo Valley in Little San Bernardino Mountains. DIRECTIONS: Take I-10 take Highway 62 (29 Palms exit) 9 1/2 miles north, turn right at the sign for Covington Park. After 300 yards, turn left at preserve sign. (760) SANTA ROSA PLATEAU (Riverside County) 3100 acres of Englemann oaks, vernal pools, rolling grassland, abundant birds. Located halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego about 40 miles south of Riverside near the town of Murrieta. DIRECTIONS: Take I-15 either north from San Diego or south from Los Angeles area; turn west at the Clinton Keith Road exit near Murrieta and drive five miles to preserve gate on left. (951) NATIONAL PARK SERVICE - U.S. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR COLD CREEK CANYON PRESERVE (Los Angeles County) Rocky canyons contain pristine native vegetation, streams, and waterfalls. The Nature Conservancy has preserved this ecologically important area for research and allows limited hiking by reservation. There is a self-guided nature trail, and docents provide environmental education. Located on Stunt Road off Mulholland Highway. (818) NATIONAL AUDOBON SOCIETY WILDLIFE SANCTUARY STARR RANCH AUDUBON SANCTUARY (Orange County) Almost 4000 acres in the Santa Ana Mountains, south of Los Angeles, at the end of State Route 19. An undisturbed area supporting wildlife from gopher snakes to mountain lions, hummingbirds to eagles. Visiting is limited. Please make arrangments in advance. Resident Manager: P.O.
