Technical Information Uniperol EL September 1999 Nonionic dispersing agent, emulsifier and leveling agent for use in textile dyeing and printing processes. Colorants and Finishing Products
Nature Ethoxylation product of a vegetable oil, nonionic, approx. 100% active substance Physical Form Pale yellow, clear to slightly cloudy, highly viscous liquid. Storage Note on storage When stored correctly, in sealed containers, Uniperol EL has a shelf life of at least 24 months. Uniperol EL turns to a pasty consistency or solid at low temperatures, but can be liquefied by warming. Properties Solubility ph Density Up to 200 g of Uniperol EL dissolves readily in 1 l of water. Uniperol EL dissolves in liquid or melted fatty acids, fats, waxes and a number of organic solvents. Aqueous solutions are neutral Approx g/cm 3 at 45 C Pour Point/ Setting Point Below about 20 C A 20% stock solution in water has a freezing temperature of -1 C. Stability Uniperol EL is resistant to hard water. It is hydrolyzed by strong alkalis, but it is resistant to weak alkalis and acids, especially at low temperatures. Action Uniperol EL has a very pronounced emulsifying and dispersing effect on many substances that are insoluble or sparingly soluble in water. 2
Application Dyeing of PA and CA fibers Uniperol EL serves as a dispersing and leveling agent in the dyeing of polyamide and acetate fibers with disperse dyes. It prevents dye agglomeration and thus ensures level dyeings, free of specks and stains. Depending on the liquor ratio employed, the dyebath is set with g/l of Uniperol EL before adding the dye. Hosiery Dyeing Depending on the dyeing equipment, the density of the packed goods, the dyeing time and the liquor circulation through the material, typical dyebath settings are: Circulatory equipment 0.5 g/l of Uniperol EL Densely packed from dyeing machines up to 3.0 g/l of Uniperol EL Dyeing with disperse and direct dyes Leveling and lightening When viscose/acetate blends are dyed in one bath with direct and disperse dyes, it is advisable to also add an anionic dyeing auxiliary to raise the cloud point of the Uniperol EL solution, particularly when Glauber s Salt is present, e.g. a 1:1 mixture of Uniperol W and Uniperol EL. Unlevel dyeings with disperse dyes on polyamide or acetate fibers can be leveled out by boiling with Uniperol EL. It is also useful for partially stripping disperse-dyed material. Concentrations: Leveling out: Partial stripping: g/l Uniperol EL 2-5 g/l Uniperol EL Dyeing of PES fibers Dyeings with a more uniform appearance are obtained particularly on PES/CEL fabric blends with different yarn counts, if 1-5 g/l Uniperol EL is added to the pad liquor. 3
Continuous lightening Dyeings that have turned out too deep in shade can be lightened using greater quantities of Uniperol EL in the thermosol-pad-steam process. Padding g/l Uniperol EL 10 g/l Primasol V 2 g/l Primasol N-NF Liquor pick-up 50-60% Dry at 140 C Thermosol for 60 s at 220 C Follow with reductive pad-steam treatment: g/l caustic soda 38 Bé g/l Hydrosulfite Conc. BASF g/l Uniperol AC High Conc. 2 g/l Basol WS 1 g/l Trilon TA Powder Liquor pick-up 50 60% Steam for 60 s at 102 C Wash, oxidize and soap by the usual method. This procedure can be used to lighten both components of a dyed blend by 30 50%. The stripping effect should be checked in trials under the local conditions. Note When preparing padding liquors, the Uniperol EL should be stirred in first before adding the dyes and other components, e.g. wetting agents, antimigration agents, etc. Leveling and lightening In the leveling and lightening in long liquors of dyeings produced with disperse dyes on PES fibers and their blends, Uniperol EL improves the emulsion stability of the carriers used. 4
Washing off When dyeings on PES/CEL blends are washed off at the boil, the disperse dyes are liable to migrate to the fiber surface. This behavior can lead to a reduction in the fastness to rubbing and to wet treatments, particularly with darker shades. These fastness proprieties can be significantly improved again by a supplementary treatment with g/l Uniperol EL 15 minutes at C Washing off of printed goods For post-washing PES/CEL goods printed with disperse and reactive dyes, it is recommended to use the following recipe: 2 g/l Uniperol EL 2 g/l Basol WS 0.5 g/l Albigen A New 1 g/l Trilon TA Powder Reductive clearing of dyeings and prints Since Uniperol EL is a very efficient dispersing agent, it promotes the removal of surface dye and dye-decomposition products in the reductive clearing process. Typical recipe for a liquor ratio of approx. 10:1 4 6 ml/l caustic soda 38 Bé 2 3 g/l Hydrosulfite Conc. BASF g/l Uniperol EL Treat printed goods for 10 minutes and dyed goods for 20 minutes at C, then rinse and acidify. Burn-out prints On PES/CEL PA/CEL Uniperol EL improves the washing-out properties of the carbonized cellulosic fiber component and also acts as a dye fixing agent in colored burn-out dyeings with dispersion dyes. Quantity recommended: 60 g/kg Uniperol EL diluted 1:2 with water. 5
Intermediate and postclearing of PES/Wo blends Some staining of the wool by the disperse dyes is inevitable in the dyeing of PES/Wo fiber blends. In order to obtain a better standard of fastness it is therefore necessary to post-clear the material to remove the disperse dye that has been taken up by the wool, as well as that which is only superficially fixed to the polyester fiber. One-bath process In most cases, dyeings which have been prepared by the onebath process cannot be reduction cleared, because the wool dyes would not withstand this treatment. They are therefore post-cleared with g/l of Uniperol EL ph 5 (with acetic acid or Eulysin S) 20 minutes at 60 C followed by a thorough rinse. In the one-bath process, reduction clearing can only be considered when the wool dyes used are resistant to this treatment, e.g. dyeings produced with Acidol Dark Blue M-TR, Acidol Navy Blue M-RBL, Acidol Black M-SRL. The reductive clearing treatment is carried out as follows: minutes at 50 C with g/l Uniperol EL 1 3 g/l Blankit IN at ph (with ammonia) 6
Two-bath Process For particularly high fastness requirements, the two-bath dyeing process with an intermediate reductive clearing treatment or wash can be used. Although reductive clearing is more effective, intermediate washing in a weakly acid medium is gentler and therefore often preferable for wool. Since there are no wool dyes to consider, the intermediate wash can be carried out more energetically than the post-washing treatment. The washing action is promoted by increasing the temperature and the amount of detergent. Extending the washing time beyond 30 minutes does not generally produce a better effect; repeating the washing treatment, on the other hand, is very effectively, particularly with dark shades. The disperse-dyed material is cleared with 3 g/l Blankit IN g/l Uniperol EL ph (with ammonia) minutes at C It is then rinsed thoroughly before the wool component is dyed in a fresh bath. Emulsification In addition to its textile applications, Uniperol EL can also be utilized to emulsify fatty acids, waxes and polar solvents. 7
Safety When using this product, the information and advice given in our Safety Data Sheet should be observed. Due attention should also be given to the precautions necessary for handling chemicals.
