1 4-H Entry Information Hinton building: 1. Entries in Department 1-9 are open to Hillsborough County 4-H Members only. 2. Projects must be completed by 4-H members in the past 12 months. 3. Limit one item per class, (except where noted). 4. Items should represent the BEST creative work of the member. 5. Items should be clean, age appropriate, and carefully done. 6. All exhibitors must have an exhibitor s number. These numbers change each year. First-time exhibitors can get a number from the UNH Cooperative Extension office prior to the Fair or at the Fair Office/Log Cabin before exhibiting or competing at the Fair. New numbers will be mailed to the exhibitor each year. 7. All items & paperwork must be checked in to the Hinton Building on Thursday evening between 2 and 9 pm with all paperwork completed prior to checking in. If paperwork is not ready at 8:00 only 5 more items may be entered. Special arrangements may be made for check-in prior to Thursday by calling the 4-H office, Exhibits must be picked up between 6 and 7 pm on Sunday. All Exhibits must remain in place at the Fair until 6 pm on Sunday for the public to enjoy. Removal prior to 6 pm may result in loss of premium. 9. Bags & totes may be left under tables with names for pickup of items on Sunday. 10. Any exhibitor who violates the rules set by any Superintendent will forfeit premium money. 11. All Entries are shown at exhibitors risk. The Fair will take every precaution for their safekeeping, but will not be held responsible for any damage or accident that may occur. 12. Departments 1-9 will be judged Friday. Exhibits will remain open for the public to enjoy through Sunday at 6 pm. 13. Any entry which does not meet criteria within the Department will be disqualified at the discretion of the Superintendent & Judges. (See Department guidelines). 14. Judging: Entries are judged on the Danish System (except 4-H Cloverbuds) A: % quality B: 80-89% quality C: 79% or below quality 4-H Cloverbuds receive participation ribbons only. Ribbons & premiums will be given for each grade. 15. Exhibitors wishing to donate premiums to the Fair please write no premium on the Exhibitor Tag. The Fair Directors Thank You for your donations! Prices - 4-H Exhibitor ages 8-18: $4, one day/$10, three days. Adults: $6, one day/$15, three days. Passes will be mailed to you if money is enclosed with the order form. Without passes, you will be charged full price at the gate. NO EXCEPTIONS. 0
2 4-H Article Exhibit Tags & Information 1. Each Exhibitor (4-Her or Club or Leader) must have an Exhibitor Number This can be found on the label of your Fair notice post card. First year exhibitors can get their number by contacting the Hillsborough County 4-H Office at prior to the Fair or at the Log Cabin during check in Thursday between 2 pm and 8 pm. New numbers will be mailed to exhibitors each year. 2. To acquire Article Entry Tags contact the 4-H Office PRIOR to Thursday check in. Tags will also be available in the exhibit hall on Thursday. If entries are brought in after 8pm without tags there will be a limit of 5 items. 3. All Tags must be printed clearly, filled out correctly & completely in order to receive your fair premium. These tags are carbon copies for the Judges comments & will be separated after scoring. 4. Only ONE article per tag. 5. 4H Tags are Yellow, Cloverbud Tags are Green. (White tags are for the Open Class, non- 4-H members in the French Building.) 6. Tags & All Paperwork must be filled out PRIOR to Thursday check-in. 7. Paperwork includes = Exhibitor number Article Exhibit tags (yellow or green), Judges Score Sheets (5 copies) for Education Exhibits - see Department 1 4-H Project Entry Form (Listing all Individual & Club members entries). 8. Exhibitors wishing to donate premiums to the Fair, please write no premium on the Tag. ~ The Fair Directors Thank you for your donations! Important: ~ Be sure you are using the correct Exhibitor Number and Article Entry Tag. ~ Your number changes each year. Contact the 4-H Office if needed. ~ Premiums awarded by exhibitor numbers make sure your number is correct or no premium will be received. ~ 4-H Clubs also need a number to receive their club exhibits award. ~ If your 4-H club does not have a bank account then the club exhibit number should be in the leader s name, in order to cash the check. 1
3 4-H EXHIBITS Hinton Building Superintendents Bethany Craig and Melissa Ulery 4-H EDUCATIONAL EXHIBITS DEPARTMENT 1 4-H Educational Exhibits are displayed by clubs, individuals or leaders. One exhibit per club, and/or one exhibit per individual or per leader. Exhibits must be free standing - nothing on the walls. Exhibit will be judged as a unit; individual items placed in the educational exhibits will not be judged. Approximate space is 6 feet long x 3 feet deep. (Additional space and floor space for free-standing exhibits by advance request only, if space is available.) Exhibits must have a sign indicating the exhibit title, name of the club, members or individual participating in exhibit preparation, and members ages. Exhibit must be pre-entered by August 25th. Exhibit will be judged on 4 criteria, receiving up to 25 points per criteria met. Criteria: 1) Topic is clearly communicated 2) Information is accurate and informative 3) Exhibit is organized and creative 4) Exhibit is neat and attractive Class 1: 4-H Cloverbud Educational Exhibit As a group or individual, Cloverbuds (ages 5-7) may design a display to illustrate an educational message, the club s project work or a 4-H story. The exhibit should be planned by the Cloverbuds (with help from the leaders) and can be assembled at the Fair by the Cloverbuds and/or leaders of the club. The exhibit must include display articles, samples and have one or more posters (handouts optional). Class 2: 4-H Club Youth Educational Exhibit As a group, a 4-H Club may design a display to illustrate an educational message, the club s project work or a 4-H story. The exhibit should be planned by the members and can be assembled at the fair by the members and/or leaders of the club. The exhibit must include display articles, samples and have one or more posters (handouts optional). Class 3: 4-H Youth Individual Educational Exhibit An individual 4-H member (ages 8-18) may design a display to illustrate an educational message, the individual s project work or a 4-H story. The exhibit should be planned by the members and can be assembled at the Fair by the members and/or leaders of the club. The exhibit must include display articles, samples and have one or more posters (handouts optional). Class 4: 4-H Adult Leader Education Exhibit A 4-H Leader may design a display to illustrate an educational message, a 4-H project or 4-H story. The exhibit must include display articles, samples and have one or more posters (handouts optional). Class 5: 4-H Poster Education Exhibit A 4-H Club, Individual or Leader may design a display to illustrate an educational message, a 4-H project or 4- H story. The exhibit contains posters only to illustrate the message (no display articles, samples or handouts). Use of a 3 sided free standing exhibit board or any other type of free standing display is recommended. Awards: Class 1 - Each child will receive a green participation ribbon only Classes 2, 3, 4 - A: $10, B: $6, C: $4 Class 5 - A: $5, B: $3, C: $2 2
4 4-H PROJECTS 4-H Awards: 4-H Project Award - a rosette will be awarded to the top item in each 4-H department. 4-H Parent/Leader/Teen Award - a rosette will be awarded to a unique project that promotes Making the Best Better. Awards for Departments 2-9: A: $2; B: $1.50; C: $1 Entries Limited to 1 per class except where noted. Cloverbuds - participation ribbons only DEPARTMENT 2 Citizenship And Civic Education, Personal Development and Leadership Class 1: 4-H Memory Book (individual or club) - a scrapbook or page featuring souvenir materials from past events and activities, including the current year. Class 2: Community Service Portfolio - a report with text and pictures of past and current service projects done in the community (within the past 12 months) DEPARTMENT 3 Communication And Expressive Arts Communication: All entries in Classes 1-6 should be labeled on back with title of work, name of member, age and 4-H Club. Class 1: Poems, short stories, narratives, creative writing (should be presented in a plastic sheet protector. Limit 2 items, each type) Class 2: Posters (no larger than 14 x 22 ) Class 3: Photography - black and white, single or series of 4 photos that tell a story, mounted using matboard or framed, overall dimensions not to exceed 11 x 14. Limit 3 entries. Class 4: Photography - color, single or series of 4 photos that tell a story, mounted using matboard or framed, overall dimensions not to exceed 11 x 14. Limit 3 entries. Limit 2 items of each type of art in classes Class 5: Knitting, crochet Class 6: Quilting, patchwork, appliqué Class 7: Embroidery, cross stitch, needlepoint Class 8: Weaving using natural materials, rush, bark, or reeds Class 9: Macrame, Braiding, Rug Braiding, Latch Hook, Rug Hook Class 10: Jewelry Class 11: Sculpture or carving Class 12: Painting, Drawing, graphic arts, calligraphy, stenciling Class 13: Paper Craft (silk screen, wood cut, etching, batik, lithograph) Class 14: Stained Glass Class 15: Ceramics (painted greenware, wheel, hand built, pottery) Class 16: Metal Craft Class 17: Leather Craft Class 18: Basketry Class 19: Model Kits (includes rockets not previously flown) Class 20: Tie Dye Class 21: Art using recycled materials Class 22: Other (limit 3 items total) 3
5 DEPARTMENT 4 Environmental Education and Natural Resources Concerning wilderness etiquette and collections - never take specimens from protected areas or from private land without permission. Never collect specimens if they are endangered or threatened and never collect specimens unless they are abundant. Collect only what is needed. Class 1: Class 2: Class 3: Class 4: Class 5 Class 6: Class 7: Class 8: Chart on how to use map and compass, with map showing route and description of hike taken (map size 14 x 22 ) Model of low impact campsite or survival shelter (snow shelter or lean-to) Animal track or sign collection Checklist of birds seen and identified with photographs, drawings or pictures of the birds and information about them Pressed leaf, twig, wood, flower, shell or sea wood collection (10 or more specimens) mounted, labeled Backpack or hiking survival kit Handmade outdoor equipment (tent, backpack, gaiters, snowshoes, etc.) Other environmental education or natural resource DEPARTMENT 5 Family And Consumer Sciences Clothing & Textiles: Bring garment in transparent covering for protection. All items must be clean and in good condition. (Limit 2 items per class except where noted.) Class 1: Household item. (laundry bag, tote bag, purse, pouch, apron, pot holder, placemat, napkins) Class 2: Toys - stuffed animal, puppet, doll, doll clothes Class 3: Skirt, Pants, shorts Class 4: Jacket or Outerwear Class 5: Shirt or vest Class 6: Dress or suit Class 7: Nightclothes (pajamas, nightgown) Class 8: Costume Class 9: Animal gear, clothes Class 10: No-Sew Fleece Class 11: Handspun skein of yarn Class 12: Felting piece and/or article made from one s own felting Class 13: Hand woven article Foods And Nutrition: Please display a recipe with all entries. Recipe must be written, typed or computer generated on a clean 3 x 5 card. Items need to be on disposable plates with 4-Hers name on bottom. Wrap or bag item with transparent covering (do not seal) classes Limit 1 item each type per class. Class 18: Home packed lunch box with menu and description (8 ½ x 11 ) of how it relates to the food pyramid Class 19: Attractive place setting with menu and description (8 ½ x 11 ) of how it relates to the food pyramid Class 20: Snack on the run with menu and description (8 ½ x 11 ) of how it relates to the food pyramid Class 21: Cookies, brownies, bars, frosted or unfrosted cupcakes, muffins, biscuits, donuts, yeast rolls, cinnamon rolls. 5 on a plate. Class 22: Cake, coffee cake, loaf of bread or loaf of quickbread, 1 each Class 23: Pie - one or two crust Class 24: Candy or Fudge (5 pieces) Class 25: Other food 4
6 Class 28: Food Preservation - fruits, vegetables, meats, jellies, jams, marmalades, pickles, relishes, herb vinegar, dried herbs, maple syrup. Up to 4 different items per person may be exhibited. One jar per item. ** Food Preservation Awards sponsored by Tractor Supply of Milford Food Preservation Rules: No duplicate entries. Products shown should be of the current year s production. All jars must be labeled neatly on the top of the lid or on the front of the jar, with name of product. Regular Mason-type threaded home canning jars with self-sealing lids must be used. Jars are to be entered without metal screw band. All canned goods must be processed according to the USDA regulations, including approved tomato procedure. For guidelines visit Jars sealed with paraffin, wire-bail, and zinc porcelainlined cap jars WILL BE DISQUALIFIED. No doilies or fabric on jars. When setting up display, put ticket on jars. Include recipe card with each entry, written, typed or computer generated on 3 x 5 card. DEPARTMENT 6 Health Lifestyle Education Class 1: Create a first aid kit Class 2: Design an exercise program for you or your family Class 3: Design a safety plan for your home DEPARTMENT 8 Plant and Animal Sciences Class 1: Garden Arrangement - attractive display in a box, basket or other container of at least five varieties of garden vegetables (Limit 2 arrangements) Class 2: Individual Vegetables - any variety exhibited individually in the following quantities. Items should be on disposable plates. Limited to 1 plate each variety: 5 each: lima, shell or string beans, or peas in a pod ½ pint container of dry beans or shelled peas 5 each: gourds (mixture) 2 each: cucumbers, peppers, summer squash or zucchini 3 each: beets, carrots, onions, parsnips, potatoes, corn, tomatoes or turnips 1 each: broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, eggplant, melon, pumpkin, squash or watermelon Class 3: Individual Fruit - 3 each on disposable plate: peaches, pears or apples (limited to 1 plate each variety) Class 4: Herbs - fresh or dried (5 stems) (limited to 3 varieties per member) Class 5: Flower Arrangement - attractive dried or fresh flower display to be viewed from all sides and of a height to be seen over while seated Class 6: Individual Flower - 3 or more stems from any variety of annual or perennial (limited to 3 varieties) Class 7: Eggs - 1 dozen, uniform size and color (from member s own flock) DEPARTMENT 9 Science and Technology Class 1: Aerospace - exhibit a model that 4-Her has constructed and flown that demonstrates aerodynamics Class 2: Geology - rock collection (10 or more specimens), mounted and labeled Class 3: Entomology - insect collection (10 or more specimens), mounted and labeled Class 4: Electricity - an electrical project constructed by hand design or kit Class 5: Woodworking - build an object primarily of wood following basic woodworking concepts Class 6: Small Engines - construct a tool kit or rebuild a small engine Class 7: Weather and Climate - build a simple weather station Class 8: Astronomy - create a star identification kit Class 9: Other 5
