1 ART 105 CLUSTER (Must take Biology 105) ART AND NATURE: PATTERN AND PROCESS Fall 2017 Instructor: Professor Peggy Lynn Cox, TC 301, Office hours: M W 9-11, Fri. by appointment only Please ahead for any appointment. I will confirm. Phone 7266; pcox@westminster.edu Russell Art Studio hours are 7:30 a.m. 1 a.m. Please note that each studio has posted open hours when other courses are not being taught. COURSE DESCRIPTION Studying nature through art compels us to slow down the hectic contemporary pace, observe, and reflect upon the diversity of forms and colors that compose our environment. Pairing this course with Biology provides students with the opportunity to explore the why plant pigments and dyes behave the way they do. It is a study of natural color inside out. Studying a shared topic also gives students a means to expand and improve the various methods of problem solving used in Art and Biology. The primary goal of Art 105 is development of artistic creativity through a focused study of nature s palette, patterns, and textile design. Students will learn about their local and global environment through color created from plants and insects. An introduction to surface design will provide students with a cultural diversity in the textile arts as well as provide basic construction skills in textile art COURSE SUCTURE Some class sessions will be held at the Biology Field Station assisting in dye garden maintenance and harvesting. Demonstrations of techniques and exercises will be a large part of class time. Additional class time will be provided for work sessions on projects and critiques/discussion of those projects. However, the bulk of coursework must be done outside of class time. Note: that some prep work for projects will overlap ongoing projects. Collaborative work will be an important component in the learning process. Student led demonstrations and brief presentations will be part of class. D2L will be used extensively for project examples, instructions, resources, and web links with additional instruction videos. COURSE OBJECTIVES and OUTCOMES - Develop an understanding of basic surface design and color theory - Learn about 3 traditional dye methods: vat, substantive, mordant - Learning basic skills of textile arts through projects: (stitching, weaving,) - Expand critical thinking skills through critiques and presentations - Participate in a group exhibit at the Environmental Symposium in Fall.

2 PROJECTS and Grade point distribution 1000 points possible (note: many of the projects will over- lap for technical needs) 25 points, Notebook: keeping swatches of colors, adjusted colors, documenting the plant or insect with drawings and basic processing data, historical notes of interest 50 points, Eco printing: Students will make wall hangings or scarves using plant material steamed /cooked directly onto fabric 375 points, Color Collages: Students will construct a series 3-4 of mini textile collages. Each student will be expected to contribute one collage for the Tiny House project. 350 points, Surface Design with Indigo and Shibori: students will learn various binding and clamping methods to make a small construction. Over Painting/Printing with thickened dyes will be introduced. Fabrics will then be selected to create a sewn wall hanging. One scarf will also be made from this method. 200 points, Weave: Students will be introduced to basic tapestry methods to create a small weaving from their hand dyed yarns. Options are creating a specific size scarf with prior approval and demonstrated skills in knitting or crochet. GRADING CRITERIA FINE ART EVALUATION PROCEDURES AND GUIDELINES: Any changes in this policy will be provided in writing to students. Initially assignments will be accompanied by a series of critiques prior to completion. Read the following guidelines concerning your grades. Students will be evaluated by the quality of their work and demonstration of an understanding of concepts. Late projects lose 5% each class period they are late. No project will be accepted after two class periods it is due A to A- Clear and complete understanding of the concepts introduced through the assignment. Exceptionally creative thinking and production with unique applications of concepts in solving problems. Sensitive use of materials and tools. Excellent craftsmanship. Excellent work habits and studio maintenance. B+ to B- Good understanding of specific concepts introduced through the assignment. Creative application of these concepts in solving problems. Good use or materials, (good craftsmanship). Shows some improvement, but most areas could all be improved with more effort or paying closer attention to instructions. Strong participation. Good work habits. C+ to C- Acceptable understanding and application of concepts and solving problems. Some understanding of materials and tools but continually requiring assistance in the same areas. Repeating design or technical errors that have been pointed out in general or individually. Limited participation in class with studio maintenance. Quality of contribution is low and or inappropriate. Frequent or repeated use of clichés after they have been pointed. Little personal/aesthetic growth. Average craftsmanship with obvious flaws. D+ to D- Incomplete work, incorrect methods per assignment, or little understanding (or lack of interest in learning or improving), concepts in problems. Unimaginative and poor application of these concepts in solving problems. Standard and sloppy use of materials and tools. Little or no class participation. Continual use of clichés in work and discussions. No personal or aesthetic growth. Sloppy presentations and craftsmanship.

3 COURSE POLICIES Late projects: lose 5% each DAY they are late. No project will be accepted after two class periods Attendance: Students are expected to arrive on time and stay the full length of class. You are allowed 2 misses excused or unexcused. Each additional day missed, will lower your final course grade by one degree, (an A would become A- if three days are missed). If you miss six sessions, you will automatically fail the course. If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to find out what was material was covered. Chronic tardiness is arriving or leaving 10 minutes late/early. Two tardies = one full miss. Academic Integrity: students are expected to do their own work. We encourage helping each other, but not completing, (or stealing), someone else s work. In the arts, studying and using elements of another artists designs is common as long as your own work has a significant divergence from the original and the original source is acknowledged. Studio Etiquette: All students will be expected to follow all safety rules, maintain clean work areas and equipment. All students will be responsible for maintaining and monitoring dye processes. Leaving the studios with equipment turned on is not permitted unless special provisions have been made with the instructor. Personal supplies and tools should be kept in lockers. The college is not responsible for theft of person property. Studio supplies are to remain in the studio. Hoarding studio supplies or theft of another s supplies will result in failure of the current project. Studios and supplies are only to be used for course related activities. STUDIO ACCESS: A current Titan card registered with security is required for entrance only during the semester of your course. Not having or loss of a card is not an excuse for late work or missing an assigned task. Studio hours are 7:30 a.m. 1 a.m. Note that security will ask you to leave if after hours. Also Note that the doors will not work before 7:30 RESOURCES: Auther, Elissa, String, Felt, Thread: The Hierarchy of Art and Craft in American Art, Univ. of Minnesota Press, Burgess, Rebecca, Harvesting Color: How to Find Plants and Make Natural Dyes. 4 STUDIO SAFETY RULES: DO NOT LEAVE ACTIVE HOT PLATES UNATTENDED If you must leave, use a lid to contain heat and turn off the pot. Failure to follow this rule will result in current project failure. If this occurs twice, your final grade will be lowered by 10%. If this occurs three times, you will fail the course Wipe up all spills with mop by the sink or with towels. Do not attempt to move pots of hot water by hand. Bail out the pot and use a cart for transport to and from the sinks. Unplug irons when not in use. Use of gloves, mask, and eye protection is recommended when using chemicals. Keep chemical and other related work areas clean. Wash and rinse any tools or bowls you use, dry and return to original site Do not leave anything in the sinks. Accessibility Statement Westminster College actively strives for the full inclusion of all our students. Students with disabilities who require access solutions for environmental or curricular barriers should contact Disability Support Services located in 209 Thompson-Clark Hall. Phone Terms of this syllabus are subject to change and students will be notified in writing of any changes.
