12 The new NIH biosketch emphasizes your accomplishments instead of just a list of publications. The primary focus of the new NIH biosketch will be the magnitude and significance of the scientific advances associated with a researcher s discoveries and the specific role the researcher played in those findings. This change will help reviewers evaluate you not by where you ve published or how many times, but instead by what you ve accomplished. We strongly believe that allowing a researcher to generate an account of his or her work will provide a clearer picture of each individual s contributions and capabilities. Rockey S. Changes to the biosketch. Rock Talk Available at:
13 The historical background that frames the scientific problem The central finding(s) The influence of the finding(s) on the progress of science or the application of those finding(s) to health or technology Your specific role in the described work Up to four peer-reviewed publications or other non-publication research products that are relevant to that contribution Each contribution is no more than ½ page long, including citations
14 In 2002, with funding from the German Ministry of Science and Research, I established IFOMIS (the Institute for Formal Ontology and Medical Information Science), the world s first research institute devoted to biomedical ontology. IFOMIS was founded on the hypothesis that an upper-level ontology constructed on the basis of sound logical principles can be of value to those involved in the creation of domain ontologies in the different fields of biomedicine. Basic Formal Ontology (BFO), version 1.0 of which was developed at IFOMIS, and is now used as common upper level architecture for over 130 biomedical ontologies. It thereby promotes interoperability of these ontologies in ways that enhance integration of data across disciplines and research communities. Smith B.
