4 1 GENERAL DATA Integrated Science and Technology System Located in the North of Iberian Peninsula, Euskadi has an area of m2 and around 2,2 millions inhabitants. GDP per inhabitant: (UE 27: ) Unemployment in 2008: 4,6%
5 1 GENERAL DATA R&D in Basque Country The global expense in R&D supposes the 1,96% of the GDP people working in R&D working as researchers 2009 European Innovation Index (Ell): 0.51 (EU 27:0.48) The business expense in R&D is 1,58% of the GDP In 1970 R&D expense amounted to less than 0,1% of GDP, one of the lowest in Spain. Evolution of R&D expenditure 2003: 1,39% 2004: 1,51% 2005: 1,48% 2006: 1,58% 2007: 1,88% 2008: 1,87% 2009: 1,96%
6 1 GENERAL DATA R&D in Basque Country Basque companies have financed almost 59% of the total expense, and have executed 81,1% companies carry out technological innovation activities ( ) Seven basque companies among the 1000 European companies with the highest investment in R&D: ITP, Iberdrola, Gamesa, Faes Farma, Fagor, CAF and Cie Automotive, raising the investment to 239 millions of euros
7 1 GENERAL DATA Innovation in Basque Country The Basque Country stood at 10th place, in the group of high innovation countries in the EU 27. Human Resources, Linkages and Entrepreneurship and Economic Effects are the three best dimensions of basque innovation 46,7 per thousand young people aged 20 to 29 are graduates of Science and Engineering and Social Sciences and Humanities The percentage of the population with higher education aged 25 to 64 came to 42.2% Personnel employed in knowledge intensive service sectors represents 19% of total employment Medium and high tech exports represented 51,5% of total exports 30,5% of SMEs have developed a technological innovation
