We are grateful that we can look back on a successful 2016/17 fiscal year, and therefore we would like to send out a giant thank you to the entire value chain, our owners and suppliers of raw materials and our employees, but not least the loyal customers of our quality products. It gives us great pleasure to work every day to meet the growing demands and needs of our markets, both qualitatively and quantitatively, and to find customer-oriented professional product solutions that meet the needs and requirements of our customers. True to the motto of one of our production managers, which has long since developed into the motto of all employees: It can always be better! We are looking back on a financial year in which we managed to expand our contract position for potatoes and peas despite fierce competition in the market for raw materials. We can rely on growers in an agricultural region that is the world leader in harvesting exactly the kind of raw materials that we need. Our goal is to continue to expand this base with a look to the future in order to meet all our customers quality requirements. Looking into the immediate future, we must meet our customers continuously increasing demands for quality products. Therefore, we are determined to increase our presence in high-growth markets, such as the market for potato flakes but also for pea products and starch derivatives, by expanding and modernizing our production facilities to meet those demands. Other essential tasks that we must undertake include incessantly striving towards improvement alongside the continued development of current and future products. As a supplier, we will work together with our customers to solve any issues. There have been further investments in our innovation center. However, our employees, who are the driving force behind the success of the Group, must never be forgotten, and that is why we want to continuously work to increase their satisfaction. The key to achieving this satisfaction lies in fostering the personal development of each employee as well as providing a good working atmosphere that offers challenging tasks and opportunities for lifelong learning. After all, only a motivated team can achieve top results for its customers, employees and owners! As of January 1, 2018, Dr. Hinkelmann will be steping down from his position as Managing Director (CEO) of Emsland-Stärke GmbH. There was a great deal of interest in the invitation among the contract farmers, and the Emsland Group welcomed approximately 200 participants on both days. The participants had an exciting program to look forward to. A visit to the Emsland Group s 2017 potato test field for the PPO test operation in Valthermond was at the top of the agenda, along with the detailed presentations and talks. This test field involved a commissioned test field for yield determination and an assessment of the sugar values during storage. The results of this commissioned test will be used by the experts in raw materials procurement at the Emsland Group for the purpose of providing specific technical advice to the farmers. The goal is to use the field tours to provide the farmers with advice on cultivation in order to increase the quality and quantity of potatoes. The Emsland Group, in cooperation with the PPO, laid out a test field with 16 resistant potato varieties for starch or food. The PPO (Praktijkonderzoek Plant en Omgeving, a plant research facility) is part of the Wageningen University. Plant Manager Gerard Hoekzema explained the crop rotation and the challenges of nematodes living in the wild to the contract farmers. Comprehensive potato variety tests were used to present important information about soil Members of the producers association during the inspection of a test field conditions, potato varieties, and processing to the participants. The most important characteristics for each type were discussed in detail. The program included relevant talks that were given by Klaas Wijnholds and during which coffee and cake were served. These talks included the expansion of potato cultivation and the challenges in the coming years. Overall, there were many positive reactions noted on the part of the contract farmers. Good feedback was received for the raw materials department of the Emsland Group, which will certainly plan another event of this type.

4 06 Management Management 07 Prominent political groups visit Emsland Group 1st Emsland Group Finance Conference The topic of finance was the focus of a two-day conference held on January 18-19, The event, a first for the group, was intended to familiarize financial managers with the group s key companies and to provide an opportunity to collaborate on focus topics from the CFO areas of accounting, controlling, treasury and IT, each led by Emsland Group s CFO Mr. Peter Höning. The event was attended by members of the group s larger affiliated companies in Germany, Turkey, Poland and the United States, as well as participants representing the group s holding company, Emsland-Stärke GmbH. The auditing and accounting services provider PwC was also in attendance. The Finance Conference featured preparation work for the 2017/2018 planning process and creation of the 2016/2017 annual statement, along with presentations and talks on the projects which were recently launched in the group s CFO departments. An overview of the Emsland Group s product development activities was provided by the Innovation Center in Emlichheim. The first Finance Conference received exceedingly positive feedback from participants and is set to be held on an annual basis in the future. At the end of July and in mid-september 2017, the Emsland Group hosted visits from multiple prominent political groups. The delegation of SPD parliament member Dr. Daniela De Ridder, as well as that of state parliament member Gerd Will, visited the Group s main facility in Emlichheim. At the end of July, state parliament members from the CDU s task force on nutrition, agriculture, consumer protection and state development paid the Emsland Group a visit. The guests gained a comprehensive view of the Emsland Group together with the managing directors of the Emsland Group, Mr Udo Hinkelmann, Mr Gerrit-Jan Wesselink and Mr Peter Höning, as well representatives from the works council, Mr Berthold Lammers and Mr Berthold Reiners. The visit was part of an initiative to learn how policy can support companies in the agriculture sector. The topic of acquiring qualified specialist personnel, and associated soft location factors that guarantee employees a high quality of life beyond the workplace, was also discussed. Members of the Emsland Group management addressed current critical factors that are hindering economic activity for the Group, including the ongoing effects of decoupling subsidies from the production of starch potatoes, an EU reform that has seen vastly different forms of implementation in individual member countries. While starch potato production in Germany receives no subsidies, money continues (from left to right) SPD Local Association Chairman Johannes Spykman, the mayoress of Emlichheim Daniela Kösters, COO Emsland Group Gerrit-Jan Wesselink, SPD Bundestag representative Dr Daniela De Ridder, Assistant Senior Management Heike Roters, CEO Emsland Group Udo Hinkelmann, SPD Landtag representative Gerd Will to flow into other countries. This poses significant competitive disadvantages for the Emsland Group internationally. However, according to participants in the discussion, the effects of the reform can only be addressed at the European level. The issue will be appropriately addressed in the future. The high requirements associated with the disposal of the soil delivered along with the potatoes were also addressed. The representatives promised to hold talks in their respective districts concerning the current statutory requirements and to campaign for solutions that address the issues. Overall, the round of talks proved very constructive and will hopefully introduce positive changes for the Group. Following the close of the round table, the visitors were given a glimpse into research and development at the Group s Emlichheim facility, an insight which proved impressive for the delegates: The numerous applications for potato starch, as well as the proteins and fibers derived from this vegetable, are extremely diverse. From foodstuffs, especially vegan products, to paper, adhesives and textiles or even environmentally-friendly filter technologies there is hardly any industrial sector that could not benefit from potato starch. This also makes research, development and innovation in this area so necessary, and I would like to support it again in the coming legislative period, assured De Ridder. The Emsland Group company would like to express its gratitude for the representatives constructive visits! CDU State Parliamentary Group during the Emsland Innovation Germany -tour

10 18 Emsland Innovation Emsland Innovation 19 New laboratory equipment for Emsland Innovation Germany At the heart of Emsland Innovation Germany is the innovative equipment that allows the R&D team to manufacture products in pilot scale and show the effect of the various formula components or process parameters. Emsland Group expects this equipment to New UHT-machine in Emlichheim UHT-machines are typically used to manufacture UHT milk, but also other dairy products (e.g. pudding), as well as soups, sauces and even sweets, can be produced with these machines. The UHT machine can produce temperatures of up to 130 C with heating times ranging from two seconds to two minutes. This versatility makes it possible to produce products from various areas at pilotplant scale. By using this machine, application engineers can precisely measure the influence of various process parameters, and even individual ingredients, on an on an industrial scale. This makes it possible to help clients developing products and also run tests by using the machine. TGA Thermogravimetric analysis for characterizing physical and chemical properties In thermogravimetry, the mass change to a sample is measured on the basis of temperature and time. Various raw materials and products can be characterized in advance and the functionality can be reviewed within the application. Along with the moisture, decomposition temperature, and ash content is critical for the application area of filter technology, especially the course of the decomposition. ICP emissions spectrometer enriches filter technology The area of application for filter technology makes it necessary to specify the smallest quantities of elements in products for our customers and to not exceed the given limit values. This involves elements like sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and phosphorous. The ICPE gives us the opportunity to specify approximately 70 different elements. With the extreme high temperatures in the interior of the device (plasma), the sample is destroyed and disintegrates into its individual components. The atoms and ions are now excited into light emission (different wavelengths) that are used optically for identification (in other words, what element is involved here?) and that are used to measure the concentration (quantity share) used. This method of analysis makes it possible for us to control and improve processes in a timely manner for our sophisticated products. Koruma vacuum process systems ideal for delicatessen products The Fryma Koruma MaxxD involves a vacuum process system for the food industry. A broad range of applications is covered with the new device. The Maxx D can be used for manufacturing mayonnaise, dressings, sandwich spread (depending on viscosity), ketchup, and sauces that require a cold or cooking process. The Maxx D offers a usable volume of min/max 3-12 liters. The container, as well as one of the two tanks, can be heated (up to 100 C) as well as cooled (steam or cold water) and both are equipped with a double shell. As a result, it offers a variety of possible uses, including developing custom-tailored recipes for customers that make it easy to scale up production. In addition, our Innovative membrane filtration technology to achieve highly functional products products can be reviewed for process stability with comparison applications (of interest for clean label products). Higher Added Value in Secondary Pea Flows Secondary streams from pea processing, such as pea pulp or pea PPL, are now predominantly used in the animal food industry, but they still contain very valuable components such as proteins and soluble fibres. In cooperation with the French company Olygose, we are working on reprocessing pea PPL with membrane filtration technology to achieve highly functional products. After a successful laboratory phase, a production-oriented pilot plant was successfully integrated into our business. The increased added value of residual pea production streams here pea run-off results from additional protein harvesting, including a special protein known as albumin and the galacto-oligosaccharide α-gos. Albumin, which is a soluble and low-viscosity globular protein, is found in milk, eggs, meat, and fish, among others. In keeping with our guiding principle using nature to create, the Emsland Group also has new market possibilities for this particular protein. The results of the previous laboratory tests have been confirmed by eight successful production trials and the subsequent evaluation of the results. The Maxx D Koruma vacuum process system

12 22 Emsland Innovation Emsland Innovation 23 Emfloc -series certified for drinking water treatment Wide field of applications in the confectionery sector with Emden ET 50 With Emden ET 50, the Emsland Group has developed a universal starch, which is already used in many segments of the confectionery industry. A decisive advantage offered by this excellent gelling agent is the quantity required for gummy and jelly applications. Emden ET 50 produces a solid and elastic final product with a transparent, flexible form. This starch-based innovation has a prolonged minimum shelf life without creating any additional problems, and is suitable for vegan and fat-free confectionery production. In addition to general applications, experts at Emsland Group recently presented a new confectionery concept that responds to emerging trends such as gelatin substitutes and proteinenriched products: a so-called jelly bar. This fruit bar, created by extrusion or casting process, is transparent, flexible, and elastic. The jelly bar consists of a fruity mass (either as a bar or sliced into pieces), which is enriched with protein, fiber, or grains. As a finishing touch, the bar can be covered with chocolate or other trimmings. The incorporation of protein is possible in-house at Emsland, because the Emsland Group produces both starch and proteins from potatoes and peas. The next application for the research and development team is chewy candies. Usually chewy candies consist of 2% gelatin, as well as a large quantity of fat (4-6%). We were again successful here, in that Emden ET 50 produces a certain elasticity as well as a short bite structure. In chewy candies, the gelatin gives the appropriate elasticity and the fat creates the short bite, which results in a good feeling in the mouth. Due to these characteristics, we have succeeded in replacing both the fat and the gelatin with our starch. As a result, there is no need for emulsifiers, because there is no fat or water in the product any longer, explains Jakob Woltjes, Technical Sales Manager for Innovation at the Emsland Group. Further potential areas of application for Emden ET 50 include marshmallows, jams, spreads, and dairy products. Based on the UNE-EN 1406:2010 standard, our Emfloc KA 3, Emfloc ECG 750 and Emfloc KCG 750 products can now be used to treat water for human consumption. Our products are tested by an external laboratory and thus certified for drinking water treatment. The standard describes the properties of modified starches and determines the requirements as well as the appropriate testing methods. Chemical and physical properties and purity criteria are recorded. The individual member countries of the European Union are Expansion of the mini potato dumpling with coating product range Traditional potato and bread dumplings in a boil-in-bag package for the food retail trade and bulk consumers are produced in Hagenow. The potato dumpling product range has been expanded since 2015 by the addition of the mini potato dumpling with coating. In the latest development, the mini dumplings can now be enjoyed with a hearty and herby tomato-basil coating. After the dumplings have been prepared accordingly, they are tossed in the coating stirred into oil and fried until responsible for applying this European standard. National states may deviate from this standard while taking account of their own regulations. In Germany, for example, the use of modified starch (drinking water ordinance) is not permitted, while it is allowed in the UK, France and Spain. Emfloc ECG 750 and Emfloc KCG 750 are highly effective cationic starch solutions. With its anionic character, Emfloc KA 3 complements the product portfolio. Emfloc KA 3 is a cold water-soluble, anionic starch which can be easily solubilized for use. crisp in a non-stick frying pan. They thus present an excellent alternative accompaniment to, for example, fried Mediterranean vegetables and fish, and complement modern cuisine. This product series offers a potential alternative for classic eating habits, irrespective of the season. It can be enjoyed on different occasions all year round. Moreover, the products are for the most part gluten- and lactose-free, and suitable for vegetarian and vegan diets. The mini dumplings are also available in the variations colorful pepper, herb mushroom, and rosemary. Sweet dessert variations, such as cinnamon-apple or spiced cookie coatings, are conceivable for the future.

13 24 Emsland Innovation Emsland Innovation 25 Emsland Group s latest gluten-free solutions Further clean label products from the Empure line Gluten-free is rightly becoming the subject of increasing importance and receives worldwide attention. The number of consumers who adopt a gluten-free diet is constantly growing. On the one hand, a small group of people has to follow a gluten-free diet because of health reasons, for example due to celiac disease (CD) or non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). On the other hand, an increasing number of people believe that a gluten-free diet is healthier. Especially the application bakery is one of the top categories in relation to new product development with a gluten-free claim. The Emsland Group has already been concerned with this global trend for a longer time and can provide innovative product solutions for different applications, such as bakery or pasta. This allows you to create various gluten-free bakery and pasta products in respect of your customized requirements. In order to follow this trend, we developed a gluten-free mug cakes which can be prepared within a few minutes by using a microwave. In this recipe we included our clean label products Empure ES 100 and Empro E 86 which increase the volume of the baked product. Both products can also be used in further gluten-free product solutions in order to enhance the structure of the crumb. The dietary fibre content of the baked goods can be increased with our pea and potato based Emfibre range. These products can also be used to support the healthy image of gluten-free products. Moreover, Emsland Group s product portfolio allows you to create a gluten-free pasta. Different Emflake and Emgranule types and also our Emfibre and Empro products give you the opportunity to develop innovative product solutions. Empure AKJEL 200 offers the following advantages: Homogeneous controlled water retention Uniform and homogeneous dough formation and elasticity Controlled adhesive behavior Execellent shaping and cutting behavior Controlled expansion Crispy light texture Alternative to waxy maize-based products Clean label is a trend that has not lost its relevance with the years. The Emsland Group adopted this trend very early, and has already developed a whole range of innovative clean label products. One of our first products within the clean label range is Empure KS 100. Due to its special characteristics, this product is very popular in the soup and sauce sector. Empure KS 100 has extremely good thickening properties, meaning a comparatively low dosage suffices. In addition, it exhibits good heat stability, comparable to a cross-linked, modified starch. It is therefore used in, for example, catering systems, where long warming periods are often required. Empure KS 100 is distinguished, in particular, by its very high gelatinization temperature, which is uniquely combined with the good thickening effect, a creamy-short texture, and a neutral, clear, non-masking taste. If Empure KS 100 is used, for example, in instant soups or sauces, its ensures gel-proof preparation the instant product can be stirred into water that is nearly at the boiling point without forming lumps. As a rule, such gel-resistance for instant products is achieved by agglomeration. By using Empure KS 100, this step can be avoided. Good results can also be achieved with Empure KS 100 in other fields of application, including bakery products, meat, and also snacks. The success story of our Empure Clean Label products continues with the new development of Empure AKJEL 200 for use in baked snacks. These snacks are very trendy since they are not fried like traditional potato snacks and therefore contain a much lower fat content. 15 28 Total Quality Management Total Quality Management 29 Emsland Group firms up Food Defense Measures Good Solutions for the Problem Zone: Loading Lane The relevance of high quality and, above all, safe foodstuffs among today s consumers is higher than ever. That is why the FSSC Standard (Food Safety System Certification 22000) plays such a decisive role in the safe manufacture of foodstuffs and food ingredients, and has now also gained international significance. In Version 3.2, even the so-called Food Defense Measures are now mandatory. Safety starts at the entrance Emsland Group has taken the next step towards increased certification for the FSSC Standard. Following the istallation of the new factory entrance for suppliers and farmers at the headquarter in 2014, the entire area has now been protected with a metal fence and secure entry points to the production facility, as well as to the research & development area (Emsland Innovation Germany) and company laboratories. Visitors must sign in as usual with the porter, where they will receive a visitor pass. This gives the plant an effective access management system and information about where and when visitors stop inside the premises. The aim is to further optimize areas such as product protection and process security. Along with this, there are regular hazard analyses and risk assessments. The new investments represent a crucial step for the Emsland Group s Food Defense activities. However, employee activities on all levels must be taken into account, since security affects everyone, including the company as a whole. Equipped with this level of consciousness within the company Measures that, among other things, provide the food manufacturing industry with protection against targeted attacks from outside. The Emsland Group also has clearly defined goals when it comes to quality, safety, ethics and sustainability. That is why constant improvements to the framework conditions are also being made along the entire supply chain. culture, with processes that ensure the safety of food ingredients and with the Made in Germany quality that is reaffirmed on a daily basis, the company will continue to gain the trust of its clients into the future. Stefan Hannemann, Operation Starch at Emsland Group: Food Protection is an important area of responsibility for companies like Emsland Group, who produces many ingredients for the whole food industry. From our point of view the food defensive part protects our products, but also our employees and clients. So food defensive includes also additional concerns for personnel and operational security. Our Headquarter in Emlichheim is now the fourth plant of Emsland s group of companies, besides the factories in Wittingen, Cloppenburg and Hagenow. But not only Emsland Group, also other companies follow the safe manufacture of foodstuffs and food ingredients. It s quite important for the food industry that the whole chain of production is working on a high food security. Emsland Food GmbH has developed and implemented solutions that reduce the risk of falling when loading silo trucks. A secure crossing with collapsible stairs was developed to help with this. The potato flake manufacturer Emsland Food GmbH in Cloppenburg has found a solution that safely bridges the gap between the platform in the loading lane and the truck gangway. There are two collapsible stairways that are hydraulically lowered from a platform at the top of the loading lane to the gangway of the vehicle. The loader can easily and safely access the dome lid and the gangway on the truck via the stairs with a railing. While on the gangway, the loader secures his/her safety harness to given attachment points following the strict instructions of the company. Even here, The loader can go back to the platform via the stairs when the vehicle is brought into position for the next silo opening. the railing on the gangway cannot be folded up for most silo vehicles. If the driver has to move the vehicle to position the next silo opening under the loading station, the loader can go back over the stairs to the platform The hydraulically lowered staircase allows the loader to safely access the gangway of the vehicle from the platform of the loading lane where he/she can stand safely. From here, the loader can also operate the stairs. In this way, at Emsland Food in Cloppenburg, the silo vehicles can be loaded ergonomically and safely without the need for the loader to climb.

17 32 Human Ressources Human Ressources 33 The following traineeships are available at the seven corporate locations in Germany: Training Offensive at Emsland Group The foundation for the success of a company is its employees. Therefore, the Emsland Group relies on the excellent skills and continuous advanced training of its employees. For the Emsland Group, finding the right individuals for the many traineeship positions at its main location in Emlichheim and its six other plant locations is of central importance. The company is now making major efforts to find motivated trainees for August In addition to job advertisements and public relations work, the Emsland Group has had great success at vocational and professional trade fairs. Here, company apprenticeships were illustrated in newly-made informational flyers and brochures, as well as a new trade fair system for all locations. The attending vocational training representatives were quite happy with the large number of potential apprentices and career starters and held interesting conversations with them. As a result, we have managed to fill all twelve traineeship positions at our main location in Emlichheim among others. According to recent polls, there is an upward trend for young people to want to reach their full potential in everyday work situations, to take on challenges and to have the opportunity to climb the career ladder even globally. We would like to extend this opportunity to young trainees starting at the Emsland Group as Industrial Business Managers, Chemical Lab Technicians, Chemical Technicians or even Specialists in Food Technology. With a history stretching nearly 90 years, the Emsland Group is an exciting company that combines traditional values with innovative ideas. Training is a particularly important topic for the Group, and in this way, the company aims to place more focus on tomorrow s skilled workforce. For the trainees, this is an excellent opportunity to understand complex relationships, master structures but also to question workflows. This type of situation offers added value for both sides. To ensure comprehensive training for the new trainees, on the one hand, they will initially visit one of the company s seven production sites in Germany. On the other hand, they will also experience the other traineeship areas personally. Business Managers will take a look at production, or Chemical Technicians will take a peek at sales. One more thing: English classes will be offered as well. In an internationally positioned company such as the Emsland Group, this is a crucial part of training. That is why ADFC, together with AOK, launched the Cycling to Work initiative. The health campaign is designed to encourage employees to move more and to protect the environment by cycling to work. Cyclists are less ill by about two days on average per year, have a much lower body mass index than motorists and feel demonstrably better. What could be more motivating for modern employers! The commute offers ideal conditions for the integration of regular physical activity into everyday life, which is so important for office workers. We want to continue to promote this through our successful campaign, said ADFC Federal Managing Director Burkhard Stork. The Emsland Group has also been actively involved in this campaign every year. On Sept. 27, 2017, at 1:30 pm, the public drawing for the prizes for this year s Cycling to Work campaign took place. Of the 81 starters this year, 68 turned in their campaign calendar.
