2 Overview Canadian international seaborne trade was valued at $210 billion in 2014, an increase of 4.3 percent from CTA review (p.215) Safe, secure, environmentally sustainable, and efficient marine transportation contributes to a positive climate for investment and reinforces efficient movement of goods and services Technology is one of the main determinants of economic development, consumption patterns and human well-being, and technological solutions offer the main possibilities for improving overall quality of life - (adapted from the Intergovernmental Panel Working Group on Mitigation of Climate Change) 2

3 Marine R&D and Innovation R&D and innovation play a key role in improving marine safety, security, environmental sustainability, and efficiency by enabling governments and stakeholders to; Mitigate safety risks of vessels, marine infrastructure and facilities, personnel, and the travelling public Mitigate safety risks associated with climate change and environmental damage Improve operational efficiency of vessels and marine infrastructure and facilities 3

4 R&D and Innovation - The Past Hovercraft designs for oil exploration, ice breaking, maintenance of navigation aids, search and rescue, etc.. 4

5 R&D and Innovation - The Past Development of a new icebreaker bow for the MV Arctic MV Arctic at Voisey's Bay, Labrador 5

6 R&D and Innovation - The Present Amphibious high speed Thrust-Cushion Vehicle (TCV) providing reduced fuel usage, fewer emissions, and can travel over any consistent, relatively flat, or low sloping surface. 6

7 R&D and Innovation - The Present Port Emissions Inventory Tool (PEIT) measures GHG and air pollutant emissions from marine vessels, locomotives, on-road vehicles, cargo handling equipment, and administrative sources. Simplified web-based version (gopeit) under development. 7

8 R&D and Innovation - The Present Marine stack exhaust gas cleaning system (scrubber) using membrane technology and ionic liquids. Liquid absorbent reacts with the acidic sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) gas. 8

9 R&D and Innovation - The Present Contribution program (cost shared) that provides funding for shore power technology. Program runs until March 31,

10 R&D and Innovation - The Present Contribution funding for Canada s major container ports for the deployment of technologies (GPS, Radio Frequency Identification - RFID) and practices that improve port-trucking efficiency and environmental performance. Improve truck flows, reduce congestion. 10

11 R&D and Innovation - The Present Research to reduce Frazil Ice which blocks water intake on a ship. Results in engine overheating, reduced maneuverability, winter navigation at risk. 11

12 R&D and Innovation - The Future 3D printing and metal additive manufacturing for spare parts for the maritime industry. 12

13 R&D and Innovation - The Future Autonomous ships controlled by satellite communication. 13

14 R&D and Innovation - The Future Ship cargo handling and container terminals fully automated using robotics. Automated guided vehicles, stacking cranes, gantry systems, etc. 14

15 Concluding Remarks Technology can drive innovation in transportation by improving efficiency and productivity, enhancing safety and security, and by increasing environmental protection.
