The Scholarship is only for mechanical engineering students of public universities. The two main criteria for selection are: Academic excellence Proven financial constraint The objectives of the scholarship were said to be: 1. 3 MORAL DEVELOPMENT Engineering (THEORIES) Ethics IN RELATION TO ENGINEERING ETHICS Moral Autonomy Engineering Ethics In the June issue of ESME Focus we mentioned about Moral Autonomy. In this issue, we will see Moral autonomy is defined as, decisions actions exercised on the basis of moral Moral concern Development for other Theories. people recognition of good moral reasons. 4 The theories of moral development by Kohlberg Gilligan differ in the following respects Koblberg s Theory 1. Is based on the study of men. 2. Men give importance to moral rule. 3. Ethics of rules rights 1. Justice 2. Factual 3. Right or wrong 4. Logic only 5. Logic rule based 6. Less of caring 7. Matter of fact (practical) 8. Present focus 9. Strict rules 10 Independence 11 Rigid 12 Taking a comming role 13 Transactional approach Carol Gilligan s Theory A. Basic Aspects 1. Is based on the study of men women. 2. Women always want to keep up the personal relationships with all the persons involved in the situations. 3. Women give attention to circumstances leading to critical situations rather than rules: (context oriented ethics of care). B. Characteristic Features 1. Reason 2. Emotional 3. Impact on relationships 4. Compassion too 5. Caring concern 6. More of caring 7. Abstract 8. Future focus 9. Making exceptions 10 Dependence 11 Human- oriented 12 Shying away from decision making 13 Transformational approach The difference in these two theories is explained through the well- known example of the Heinz s dilemma. Heinz being poor a debtor could not cover the costly medicine for his sick wife, which was ten times higher than the normal cost. Initially, he begged the Pharmacist to give him at half price or allow him to pay for it later. The Pharmacist refused to oblige him either way. Finally, he forcibly entered the pharmacy stole the drug. According to Kohlberg s study, men observed that Theft was morally wrong at the conventional level because, property right was violated. But men at the post-conventional level, concluded that Theft was, right, if the life of a human being was in danger. But women observed that Heinz was wrong. They observed that instead of stealing he could have tried other solutions (threatening or payment in installments?) to convince the Pharmacist. Gilligan however attributed the decision by women as context- oriented not on the basis of rules ranked in the order of priority. CONSENSUS AND CONTROVERSY In the study of moral autonomy, consensus controversy are relevant factors to discuss on. Consensus means agreement controversy means conflict or disagreement. In exercising moral autonomy, one is not likely to obtain the same results as others. This situation is likely to end in a controversy. In this case, good amount of tolerance among the individuals who are autonomous, reasonable responsible is necessary. This does not mean forcing the engineers to reach unique moral solutions. Many reasonable solutions are possible to a given ethical problem. The ethics make the engineers realize the importance of tolerance among them, in case of disagreement while applying moral autonomy.

5 The Young Prospective Mechanical Engineers Speak In this New Ethiopian Year (2006E.C) we have invited two young Mechanical Engineering Students from Dila Gonder University who were in Addis Ababa during the summer break. Samrawit Berihun Henok Belay Samrawit Berihun, 22, was born in Addis Ababa attended elementary secondary school at Dejazmach Wondirad at Bole Senior Secondary School respectively. She scored a good grade that enabled her to join a university she is now a second year Mechanical Engineer at Dila University. Henok Belay, 23, was born in Dessie Town, the capital of South Wollo, attended elementary secondary school at Woldia town, the capital of North Wollo joined Gonder University. He is now a third year Mechanical Engineering student. ESME Focus had a brief stay with these young prospective Mechanical Engineers. ESME Focus:- What drew you to select Mechanical Engineering field? Samrawit:- Henok:- I like the field very much I had interest in things related to technical activities since the time of my elementary education. And when I got the opportunity to choose a field, I selected Mechanical Engineering in order to fulfill my dream. I chose Mechanical Engineering after I took the pre- engineering course. I chose this field because I decided to work on the profession which I had in my inner feeling. The other reason that made me choose this field is that I felt it will give me the opportunity for creativity. The other point is the industry will be the leading sector in the near future I can contribute a lot. ESME Focus:- You are a female student, do you think being a female Mechanical Engineer will have a negative impact on your career? Samrawit:- Some may feel like that, but I don t. Of course, this does not mean everything is smooth for a female student especially in such a field which needs strength. To some extent it may but I see it from a different angle. As you know, this is a field

6 which is considered as being a man s territory. Some may associate it with physical strength that needs muscle work. I think they forget the creativity, the design, etc. Whatever challenge it may bring, I am happy ready to face it. I would like to show women can equally do what men do. I am vey much confident I will be successful in my profession make the society believe women, like men colleagues, can be champions in this field too. ESME Focus:- What are you planning to do in the future? Henok:- Samrawit:- After I graduate from the University in Mechanical Engineering, I am planning to make a machine which I feel can solve the society s problem distribute it with fair low price. This will give me satisfaction for it creates an opportunity to serve the society that sacrificed money, energy time to educate me. I have the interest to establish my own factory to help the youth by creating job opportunity. And if I become successful, I hope I will be, it will give me mental satisfaction for contributing to my country. ESME Focus:- Anything to add? Samrawit:- Henok:- As a student, I would like to advise, especially female students, not to be tempted trapped by artificial things; it will be good to think for our bright future instead of giving up for temporary problems. Being addicted to different drugs bad habits will darken our lives for it will take us in the wrong direction. So, as females, we have to be courageous overcome all the challenges we face. If we do that, we will meet our objective. Mechanical Engineering is a profession that brings change in the life of people by using modern machine that increases productivity. The field is known for many scientific discoveries inventions. Using this opportunity, I would like to advise many young people to join this profession. ///
