1 DAVID LIEBERMAN// MAKERSPACE// PERMEABILITY ANALYSIS// THESIS: What is the purpose of a Makerspace? Is its sole function to give resources for craftsmen and creatives that otherwise would not be able to make. I believe this is not true. A Makerspace can be much more than just a haven for makers and designers. A Makerspace can be a hub for economic growth within city as a whole as well as a catalyst for a better community at the immediate location. Traditionally, a makerspace is thought of as a sort of shared office that can function across many disciplines. In some Makerspaces, the general tone is that of an office. With desks and computers, member are able to rent pods that include basics like internet and utilities. Other spaces, and perhaps more traditional ones, are filled with more active making. At ADX in Portland, the areas for rent are more akin to a workshop with tools for everything from woodworking to 3D printing. Finally, it seems a third type of makerspace exists. This final type, as I see it, is a more economically viable option where the traditional office building meets the ethos of a Makerspace. Creatives and business men alike coexist in the same building, offices can be big and small, private or not and the primary areas for cross pollination are at shared lounges and restaurants. By paying better attention to the economic needs and desire of portland, I believe a better makerspace can be possible. A good starting place to look at is industry clusters thriving in portland. The City of Portland is strategically supporting advanced manufacturing, athletic and outdoor, clean tech, and software industries. What I intend to explore with my designs this semester is how a Makerspace can better foster realistic business opportunities and economic growth while still interacting with the immediate street and neighborhood beyond. ATTACHMENT QUALITY: The primary attachment quality I believe can respond well to community design and the connection between the makers and the neighborhood is what i call a building s permeability. I believe that good communities should be full of permeable buildings, where flow between the street and buildings is easy and seamless. The front of the building, rather than being a barrier from the street, is a passageway. The scale of a permeable building is human. I feel a good example of this is an art gallery or restaurant whose facade is largely sliding windows or doors that is both literally and figuratively open to the street. The foodies are eating on the sidewalk, those passing by feel they are not excluded from dinners or the gallery within. I want the makerspace, and by extension the neighborhood, to feel inclusive. While we surveyed the neighborhood at 60 locations for qualitative data, I recorded the permeability of the buildings on a scale of 1 5 and found that, other than a few areas, the general flow between the street and structures was difficult. the area where the permeability was the highest was on the corners of Division and 11th and 12th.

3 On the neighborhood side, i found it was important to understand what Portland saw as a good neighborhood. I would add permeability to this! If you compare a good neighborhood in Portland to one in NYC, I feel one of the primary differences is the permeability found when walking down the streets of NYC. Finally, in attempting to tie greater economic growth through exports and better communities together, I found a little blurb about how local business, such as restaurants and local retail can help define a community. They strengthen and contribute to the attractiveness of Portland. The community is healthy and so is the economy.

4 AXONOMETRIC: With this axon, I am attempting to show a good example of a highly permeable building. This is the Pine Street Biscuits on the corner of 11th and division. The large patio on the corner provides a great space for the building and its occupants to interact with the street and vise versa.

5 MAP: I chose 3 Indications of Quality. The one i intend to focus on is the Permeability of Buildings. The other two i chose are Ability to Connect to Nature and the Ability to Gather.
