2 Company History and Profile BERTHOLD TECHNOLOGIES GmbH & Co KG is located in Bad Wildbad, Germany. In continuing a long tradition of innovative and original contributions to the development of sensors, detection systems and instruments dating back to 1949, we offer high performance standard products, optimal solutions for specific customer applications and OEM instruments for Biosciences, Medicine, Industrial Process Control and Radiation Protection. The original BERTHOLD product line consisted mainly of sensors and detection systems for nuclear radiation and X-rays. However, in order to satisfy the continuously changing requirements of our customers, the product lines were extended to measuring luminescence, fluorescence and to the use of microwave technique. The company was founded in 1949 in Bad Wildbad by Prof. Dr. Rudolf Berthold and was named Laboratorium Prof. Dr. Rudolf Berthold. In 1960, his son, Dr. Fritz Berthold took over the management of the company until 1989, when it was acquired by the U.S. company EG&G Inc., later named PerkinElmer Inc. In the year 2000 the Berthold family together with Hans J. Oberhofer, purchased the BERTHOLD business units Process Control, Bioanalytic and Radiation Protection from PerkinElmer and continued these businesses under the name BERTHOLD TECHNOLOGIES, with Hans J. Oberhofer as Managing Director and Dr. Fritz Berthold as Chairman of the Board. In 2003 Dr. Wilfried Reuter joined the company as Technical Director and partner. The company continues to be headquartered in Bad Wildbad with affiliated companies in Austria, Belgium, France, Great Britain, Italy, Switzerland and U.S.A. and is represented throughout the rest of the world by company appointed distributors. Our knowledge and experience in physics and in the techniques of highly sensitive detection of light, nuclear radiation and microwave frequencies, together with the use of modern electronics and software, allows us to maintain our excellent and longstanding reputation as a competent partner in solving diverse and difficult measurement problems, and as a supplier of innovative and up-to-date instruments of the highest quality and reliability. To be on such a high level of knowledge and experience, more than 10% of our sales revenues are spent on research and development, assisted by close ties with several European universities and research institutes in Germany and abroad. This ensures that innovation for the benefit of our customers continues to be the focus of our attention. Of more than 320 employees worldwide, 240 of them work in Bad Wildbad. In past years we exported 80% of our instruments. Our sales, marketing and research & development staff includes physicists, engineers, biologists, biochemists and technicians. Our technicians are trained in close cooperation with public vocational colleges. An overview of our range of activities is provided in the following pages by our senior managers. 3 Process Control BERTHOLD TECHNOLOGIES Process Control division offers one of the most comprehensive product lines for non-contact monitoring of industrial process parameters. 4 Radiation Protection BERTHOLD TECHNOLOGIES supplies extremely sensitive and reliable radiation monitors for radiation protection and health physics in research, nuclear medicine, nuclear engineering and also for nuclear decommissioning. 5 Bioanalytics and Diagnostics BERTHOLD TECHNOLOGIES is considered a worldwide leader of luminescence measuring technology and has provided thousands of luminometers for research and diagnostics. With two new luminometers, the Centro for academic and pharmaceutical research and the CentroLIA for clinical diagnostics, we plan to increase our leadership. Our multimode reader Mithras demonstrates exceptional performance in BRET technology, which is mainly used in research of G-protein coupled receptors. In gene expression studies, reporter genes have become an invaluable tool. Using our extremely sensitive imaging instrument the NightOWL, the gene expression can be examined directly in living organisms and we are making a substantial contribution to the breakthrough of this technology. 6 Production and Service More than 100 of our employees at the Bad Wildbad facility manufacture and inspect all instruments. We have a unique facility producing radioactive sources in shielding, and dedicated production areas for radiation detectors, process control systems and bioanalytical and radiation protection instruments.
