4 Medical Care, Welfare and Health Care Innovative Cybernic System: HAL, the world s first cyborg-type robot Medical HAL (Lower Limb Type) HAL for Care/Labor Support (Lumbar Type) Innovative Cybernic System: establishes simultaneous informational and physical interactions between the user and the device to integrate the functions of humans and robots. Technical Solution In addition to HAL being utilized in the fields of medical and social welfare industries, which was what HAL had originally intended for from the early stages of research and development, HAL has also been widely adopted in nursing care industries and in other industries which involve heavy work labor. When a wearer intends to move its body, various signals are sent from the brain to the muscles through nerves. These signals leaks onto the skin surface as bio-electrical signals ( BES ) which are read by the HAL system. The power units of HAL systems are activated according to these bio-electrical signals and other information obtained from its sensors, allowing the device to realize the movements intended by the user. Medical HAL: medical device that enables "Cybernic treatment", a treatment to improve/regenerate the brain neuro physical functions. The medical effects of treatment with Medical HAL for patients with the relevant diseases were approved. It also obtained approval for Medical HAL to be included under public health insurance coverage for rare neuromuscular disease in Japan and public workers compensation insurance coverage for disease such as Spinal Cord Injury in Germany. HAL for Care/Labor Support (Lumbar Type) are the worlds first robots which have performed significant reduction of the stress applied on the lumbar part through scientific analysis. 9 Artificial Intelligence Drawing out the potential of robots with deep learning AI Robot Capable of Handling Flexible Objects A machine deep learning method for humanoid robots to perform repeated soft-object folding tasks. Technical Solution This R&D effort to develop robots that can handle flexible objects will contribute to solving labor shortage problems. This study aims to propose a practical state-of-the-art technology to create a machine-learning based humanoid robot that can perform as a production line worker. The approach should provide an intuitive way for collecting data and the robot worker should be able to learn the same skills as a human worker on a production line. The task design of robotic systems have the following fundamental limitations: (1) It is difficult to adapt to environmental change; and (2) A huge cost is required for motion teaching. Our approach includes (1) a robust motion control that can adapt to environmental change through deep learning with the robot s sensory motor information, and (2) a teleoperation system that can learn a human worker s actions. It is expected that our model will contribute to the introduction of robots into fields such as assembly work as well as other applications in daily life. We developed a user interface that displays in real time a first-person perspective projected onto a head mount display device. Using the interface, we propose a two-phase deep learning model: a deep learning convolutional layer auto-encoder that extracts image features and reconstructs images, and a fully connected deep time delay neural network that dynamically learns the operating process of the robot s task from the extracted image features and motion angle signals. This model is being applied to the humanoid robot Nextage Open, which can learn to repeatedly fold flexible, soft articles. 10 Innovative Manufacturing Making Things in New Ways with Printing Technologies World s first simultaneous, multiple-point, flexible temperature and pressure sensor using printing technologies Development of a flexible TFT array sheet with a pressure sensitive layer and a temperature sensitive layer printed in high density ー Opening the way for sensors as sensitive as the human touch Technical Solution With the development of printing manufacturing technologies for TFT arrays, which form the flexible device circuit board, we created a TFT array sheet manufacturing process using a full printing continuous integrated production line. This has enabled the realization of a sensor device with low energy consumption and large surface area that is lightweight, thin and flexible. Taking advantage of the sensors flexible, lightweight and high-resolution characteristics, we hope to develop healthcare-related sensors with applications in rehabilitation and nursing care support. Beyond pressure and temperature, in the future, we hope to combine friction and other types of physical sensors with biosensors to approach the development of robot skin that has sensors as sensitive as the human touch. By directly printing pressure sensitive and temperature sensitive layers onto the TFT, we were able to realize the high density alignment of microscopic, pressure-sensitive and temperature-sensitive areas on the surface to develop the world s first simultaneous pressure and temperature detection multiple-point sheet-type sensor using printing technologies. As resistance in both the pressure and temperature sensitive layers fluctuates according to pressure or temperature, by reading the TFT source electric current connected in a straight line in each layer, the sensor is able to detect surface distribution of pressure or temperature. The ink used in the temperature layers is based on a polymer PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) ink developed at the University of Tokyo. Material composition and a high-density printing method were developed in-house to increase temperature range. 11 Innovative Manufacturing Printed Electronics for an IoT Society Curved Surface Pressure Sensor Development of a curved surface pressure sensor with a circular roll shape by combining a flexible TFT array sheet and pressure-sensitive rubber sheet Solution Proposal By combining a TFT array sheet made in a total printing continuous integrated manufacturing line with a thin pressure-sensitive rubber sheet, we developed a sheet-type pressure sensor with superior bending tolerance capabilities. Rolling up this sheet, we verified that this can function as a curved surface pressure sensor. Applications include using it on the grip portion of golf clubs or tennis racquets to monitor how strength is applied during a swing (sports field). In addition, it can be used on bicycle handlebars to make a lever-less brake bicycle where brakes are automatically activated according to how much hand pressure is applied (accident prevention and safety field). In addition, with its curved characteristics, this sensor holds promise in a wide variety of other fields. The characteristics of the materials (conductors, semiconductors, insulators) in each of the layers that make up the newly developed flexible TFT array sheet are flexible, and as a result, in a bending test (radius of curvature: 10mm, 100,000 times), changes in characteristics were no more than 5%, indicating superior bending tolerance. Because electrical resistance in the pressure-sensitive rubber goes down with the application of pressure, the sensor is able to detect the surface distribution of pressure by reading the TFT source electric current connected in a straight line. 12 Innovative Manufacturing Flexible Smart Devices manufactured by Printed Electronics Thin, Elastic Pressure Distribution Sensor Real-time pressure distribution measurement device to facilitate the observation of a person s condition A wide range of applications with its high elasticity and changeable shape Technical Solution The pressure distribution measuring device provides abundant data about the user s condition in real time for observation purposes. Examples of healthcare and sports medicine applications include measuring foot pressure distribution of walkers or runners and monitoring pressure placed on the body when seated or sleeping for nursing purposes. Until now, measurement devices for the above-mentioned uses lacked durability and flexibility and it was difficult to mount devices on areas that are subject to strong impact or are highly cushioned. AIST integrated its various technologies to develop a flexible, elastic, thin and durable pressure distribution sensor. This sensor has a wide variety of possible applications and can contribute significantly to improved quality of life (QOL). This sensor is made from an array of capacitive pressure sensor elements. When pressure is placed on the sensor, the sensor elements, which are constructed from a flexible material, are compressed and the distance between the top and bottom electrodes is reduced, which increases electrostatic capacity. The electrical conducting material of the line electrodes that form the sensor matrix uses a conductive fiber with a high aspect ratio. These conductive fibers maintain their connections even when the line electrode is stretched, which controls increases in resistance and allows for stable electric properties. 13 Innovative Manufacturing Flexible Smart Devices manufactured by Printed Electronics Film-Type Proximity Sensor and Film Mounting Technology Proximity sensor that is easy to configure and install anywhere Mounting technology that enables quick, room temperature mounting of electronic parts on top of a flexible base material Technical Solution Conventional movement sensors (i) can only be installed in specific areas because they are rigid and large; (ii) must be installed by an expert because of the knowhow required in terms of placement and direction; and (iii) can cause the psychological stress of being watched. The newly developed proximity sensor and film mounting technology can be used together to create a film-type sensor that has a high degree of flexibility and is easy to install in a wide variety of areas. For example, the sensor can be placed on the underside of a bed or floor and remain unnoticed to more naturally monitor people s movements or breathing. Using tiling technology, the film-type sensors can be configured into various sizes and shapes and connected to make sensors that cover a wide area inside a house. In addition to simple applications, such as switches and toys, this totally new type of sensor can be used to unobtrusively watch over the elderly or young children. This sensor is thin, lightweight and durable. It is also very portable so it can be carried and used anywhere. The detection limit is approximately 10 cm. Hence, it can detect a person approaching even when placed in a mattress, floor or on the other side of a wall. Its detection limit is higher when bent. While with conventional soldering and anisotropic conductive film mounting technologies, the electronic parts necessary for driving the printed electrodes and sensors easily peel off when the base is bent, with the newly developed film mounting technology, the connections between the electrodes are maintained even when bent repeatedly at a curvature radius of several centimeters. Taking advantage of these sensor and mounting technologies, we are working with a university medical department to prepare for clinical trials of a preliminary screening test for sleep apnea. In addition to applications in nursing and security, the technology holds promise in a wide range of applications in the medical field. 14 Innovative Manufacturing Flexible Smart Devices manufactured by Printed Electronics Stretchable Wire Sheet A highly stretchable wire than can be attached to clothing and other items High sensitivity detection of body movement and other types of motion Technical Solution Because wearable devices for medical and healthcare use must often be in contact with the body for long periods of time to collect data, it is important that they be comfortable to wear as well as reliable in terms of accumulating data. With these important criteria in mind, we set out to develop a sensory device that is flexible, durable and capable of providing stable output signals even when the device changes in shape with human movement. Utilizing our expertise in manufacturing large-surface-area flexible electronic devices, we focused our efforts to develop a flexible, reliable and large-surface-area sensory device. To make a flexible, elastic device, AIST developed a highly stretchable wire formed from spring-shaped conductive fibers on top of flexible pellicular resin. This wire has stable electrical characteristics, showing a change in electric resistance of only 1.2 times even when stretched more than three times its length and bent more than 200,000 times (bending radius no more than 0.1mm). When used for LED wiring, the LED emission brightness showed almost no change and the electric resistance fluctuated by only a very small degree even when stretched more than three times. This wire enables stable reading of signals from the sensor. 15 NEDO Smart Community Project in Germany Lower Saxony Establishment of an Optimal Model for a Large-Scale Hybrid Storage Battery System Suitable for the Electricity Market A large-scale hybrid storage battery system suitable for the electricity market will be constructed by integrating Japan s advanced technologies to control storage batteries based on grid information. The project aims to establish an optimal model for a hybrid storage battery system that is designed to adjust power supply and demand by providing power, reduce imbalances in balancing groups, and stabilize voltage in a local power system. Scheme Project Term: April 2017 ~ March 2020 Entrusted Companies: Hitachi Chemical, Hitachi Power Solutions, NGK Insulators In March 2017, NEDO signed a memorandum of understanding regarding the demonstration project with the Lower Saxony State Government, EWE-Verband and EEW Holding. The entrusted companies also signed an implementation document with EWE AG at the same time. At this event, NEDO will showcase next-generation, state-of-the-art technologies including IoT (Internet of Things) such as sensors and smart devices, robotics, and AI (Artificial Intelligence) technologies. NEDO will also introduce a smart community demonstration that NEDO has been conducting in Germany, in hope of creating new global business.
