3 What is ERGO? Recommended method for helping J&J organizations develop an internal ergonomics culture. Establishes systems to allow the organization to understand, recognize, resolve and prevent routine ergonomics problems with minimal professional assistance. Ergonomics expertise is available to assist with solving complex issues.

5 Ergonomics Maturity Ladder EML Six-step process that defines the development path towards achieving an ergonomics culture. Participants begin on the step that most accurately reflects where they are in their ergonomics efforts, and implement their way up the steps. A facility may step on the ladder at the appropriate level for these processes (based on the status of their current process) and does not have to start with Step 1. Annual assessment of their program

12 ERGO Culture Assessment (Audit) Seven major requirements for the ergonomics culture: Ergonomics problems are recognized before they cause serious harm Ergonomics problems are resolved quickly, and at the lowest level in the organization Ergonomically related medical cases are treated conservatively and effectively All employees have appropriate skills in ergonomics The ergonomics program is routinely reviewed and continuously improved An ergonomics culture is present at this operating site

13 ERGO Culture Assessment (Audit) Each requirement is followed by descriptors which elaborate on the statements. Each descriptor is followed by verification points. The verification points are used by the reviewer (auditor) to verify that the descriptors are complete. When all descriptors are complete, an ERGO Culture should be in placed

16 How Does ERGO Help? Shows the steps to develop an ergonomics culture Provides necessary and consistent tools (e.g. force measurement, program evaluation, risk assessment, etc.) Allows organizations to resolve routine ergonomics issues

17 Role of the Ergonomist? The ERGO Network is a worldwide group of experts that report to the World Headquarters (J&J Health and Safety) but reside at the companies. J&J does not have experts at all companies worldwide. They ensure that the J&J Ergonomics Standards, tools and processes are utilized worldwide. Assist in the development of the J&J Ergonomics Tools (e.g. Risk Assessment, Measurement Systems, etc). Provide technical expertise to resolve complex ergonomics issues, assist the companies in moving their ergonomics programs ahead. They encourage the use of cross-functional teams to foster an ergonomics culture at the sites (encourage ownership of the program and partnership with the experts).
