Colored Gemstone Values Main topics include: how the 4Cs relate to colored gems; cultural traditions, market economics, and fashion trends; specifics on color, clarity, cut, and carat weight. Lesson 5. Cultured Pearls Main topics include: the symbolism, history, and lore of pearls; how natural pearls form, their historic sources and current status in the marketplace; history and current sources of cultured pearls; methods of pearl culturing and processing; cultured pearl value factors; the key features of different types of cultured pearls; special points in selling cultured pearl jewelry. Lesson 6. Other Organic Gems Main topics include: amber, coral, shell, ivory, and tortoiseshell. 4

Gemstone Jewelry Main topics include: gem settings; popular gemstone jewelry forms and styles; gold, platinum, and silver; how jewelry is made; sources of inspiration for gemstone jewelry designs; jewelry branding. Lesson 8. Natural Gemstone Origins Main topics include: conditions that affect natural gem growth and quality; the geologic processes that create mineral gems; how gem value factors are linked to formation. Lesson 9. Gem Deposits and Mining Main topics include: how commercially important gem deposits were formed; variables that can affect the development of gem resources; mining methods for natural colored gems around the world. Lesson 10. Gem Sources and Trade Main topics include: leading sources of natural colored gems; primary trade centers of the colored gemstone industry; the gem and jewelry wholesale sector. Lesson 11. Gem Identification Main topics include: properties used to identify gems; the gem-testing process; steps in a typical identification scenario; trade laboratories and advanced gem testing. Lesson 12. Gem Magic and Romance Main topics include: history and folklore of colored gems; images, ideas, and emotions associated with colors; the birthstone tradition; anniversary gems; gems and celebrities; the connection between gems and fashion. Lesson 13. Gem and Jewelry Care Main topics include: factors that affect gem durability and care; how to care for colored gems and gemstone jewelry in the store; how to advise customers on selecting wearable jewelry and taking care of it; professional and at-home ways to clean gemstone jewelry; following-up to help customers maintain their jewelry after the purchase; taking in jewelry for repair.
