Strand 1.1 (Budget 2012) "Multiannual cooperation projects" - Summary of projects proposed for funding Project Critique and Crisis : Art in Europe since 1945 Critique and Crisis' consists of a unique attempt to offer a contemporary post-cold War perspective on European art and history since Europe will be envisaged as a mental territory and a field of interaction between values inherited from the Enlightenment. The project will be coordinated by the Deutsches Historisches Museum in Berlin, in partnership with 6 museums of modern and contemporary art from Poland, Estonia, Italy, Czech Republic, Greece and Germany and a Belgian cultural development agency. The main activity will consist of a major exhibition structured into 12 themes that address the most prominent social, political, ideological and cultural questions related to recent European history. These themes will be presented according to an all-encompassing approach that will ensure equal esteem for all works and seek to overcome the outdated divides inherited from the Cold War. The exhibition will be hosted in Berlin, Cracovie, Tallinn and Milan. Selected sections of it will tour in Berlin, Prague and Thessaloniki. In addition, 4 international workshops as well as a closing conference will take place at the partners' institutions. The programme of activities will also include an interactive website, a paper and virtual catalogue and an educational programme targeting a younger audience, developed in partnership with universities and media schools. Material and documentation produced in the framework of this project will enable a wider dissemination beyond the countries where the exhibition and other events will be hosted. Finally, a large of art professionals across Europe will collaborate so to design the contents of the project. Art has the unique power to initiate connections, thus revitalising our collective memory and reshaping our present and future. Should 'Critique and Crisis' contribute to disclosing new paths in exploring the history of art in Europe after 1945, the project would have fully achieved its main purpose Global City - Local City GL-CL is a project for the artistic exploration of the social, ecological, civic and political realities and potentials in individual city quarters and of global city developments of the cities of the participating dance and theatre festivals. GL-CL will create new performing art works relevant to the residents of a city quarter, and examine new perspectives for European artists. GL-CL wants to sensitize for a new dimension of the (performing) arts: 'city art works.'each festival will invite 1-2 local/festival-related artists to the project. They will form a group, which will then work at all 'CityLAB workshops' in every city of the festivals. Out of this group, each festival later on will choose 1 artist from another European country for a residency. In this residency, the selected artist will create a new local city art work. The results will be confronted with the city art works by other artists, who question different aspects of urban realities. The aim is to integrate artists into a wider range of European artistic exchange and collaboration, and to open a new discourse about the city and art interaction. The project will be realized with several clusters of activities: CityLAB workshops, residencies, new city art work (local aspects), invitation of European guest performances (global aspects), larger debate and discussion on the city, evaluation meetings, a final interdisciplinary forum and a final publication.objectives:to sensitize performance artists, audience and media to local aspects of European cities.to involve artists in the actual discussions about urbanism, city development etc.to explore options of artistic action together with city residents.to enable artists to work on city art projects with options for sustainable results.to bring locally rooted artists in dialogue with European-wide known artiststo create and disseminate new city-related art work.to enlarge the debate about the potential of artistic action in the city.

Theatron - Engaging New Audiences THEATRON ENGAGING NEW AUDIENCES The Greek name for theatre theatron stems from theasthai, which means to regard or to look. Theatron therefore is the place from where you look, stressing the importance of a creative dialogue between performers and their audiences. This is what we intend to do again in this project. In the words of Bertolt Brecht a theatre without an audience makes no sense. Unfortunately, too few young, not many new ethnic representatives and not many men are waiting for the curtains to rise. This threatens not only the finanical future of theatres, but also the legitimacy of the performing arts in society. We all know of the important role theatre can play in our lives and have set out to explore & develop methods of (1) creative community engagement and (2) integrated audience development to ensure that theatre remains where it belongs right at the heart of European society. Over the past 18 months, 12 organisations have become a part of this vision. Smaller and bigger institutions, repertory companies and festivals are participating. Schools for the performing arts will also take part to ensure that knowledge and experiences are passed on to the next generation. The Freie Universität Berlin will ensure that our efforts are based on the latest audience research methodology and play an integral part in the Theatron quality assurance. We are proud to stress that Theatron is both a high-level creative collaboration with challenging co-productions and adaptations, and also a didactic, social and communicative endeavour. In order to achieve this, we have set ourselves up with a detailed and ambitious work programme combining artistic collaborations (touring, adaptations, co-productions, residencies, etc) audience engagement activities (audience research, CRM, marketing & new media, education etc.) and activities that promote the long-term establishment of this collaboration & its outputs (publications, conferences, curricula) European Urban Media Network for Connecting Cities The EUROPEAN URBAN MEDIA NETWORK FOR CONNECTING CITIES (EUM-NET) reflects on the increasing presence of large-format digital screens in public spaces and aims to open this infrastructure of commercially used urban screens to broadcast cultural content. Through the use of new technologies, urban media facades can be connected Europewide. This is an outstanding challenge for artists to circulate and present their work at cental places beyond the borders.the main objective of EUM-NET is to set up a networked infrastructure of urban media facades to examine their communicative function and impact on the development on our urban digital society. We will create three future scenarios of CONNECTING CITIES: The NETWORKED CITY in 2013 will zoom into local scenes and involve the public audience into creative processes to experience the direct potential of intercultural exchange. The PARTICIPATORY CITY in 2014 will focus on the idea of the inhabitant as active citizen instead of well-behaved consumer and envision the urban media facades as digital stages and European Agora for communication. The VISIBLE CITY in 2015 recognises Urban Media Facades as real-time information boards that visualise our urban environment consisting of sensor networks that are mapping our daily life. The CONNECTING CITIES EVENTS are city-to-city real time joint broadcast events and provide a new opportunity for the European citizens to lead an intercultural dialogue and exchange across the borders. The urban media facades are a new emerging communication platform for all cultural disciplines as they offer a local and global window of visibility and interaction.the Urban Media Network unites 11 coorganisers ' all specialists in linking new media art to urban issues. They will establish a sustainable European infrastructure of Urban Media Facades through an intense programme of workshops, conferences and an artists' programme including a Mobile Urban Media Lab and Artists ` Research Residencies.

HOUSE ON FIRE In the past few years, artists and cultural agents have started to claim a place in the public debate about social, environmental and political issues, arguing that artists have an active role to play in society and that artistic creation offers a valid source of knowledge and experience. HOUSE on FIRE joins ten theatres/festivals with an active interest in the development of issue-based programming and sets out to realize the following activities: Co-productionsHoF will co-produce and present performing arts productions that have the ambition to make a contribution to the critical debate of issues on the political and social agenda. Each production will be co-produced by at least two partners of the network and made available for further presentation in Europe. Thus, HoF strives to internationalize the strong creative impulses of the new paradigm of social responsibility and political activism that is emerging in arts.thematic programshof will develop multidisciplinary thematic programs in all partner countries, made up of performances, conferences, film screenings, concerts, projects for children, community-based initiatives and workshops. They are realized in close collaboration with Associated Partners from universities and civil society and include participants from all over Europe. They focus on the sustainability of human civilization at a point in history when globalization is putting enormous strains on existing systems, but also offering new opportunities. Copy-booksHoF takes on the challenge of critically engaging the new `reality trend' in contemporary performance. It will produce a series of five downloadable publications about thematic approaches in the performing arts. The copy-books will include interviews with artists, critical analyses, description of working processes and methodologies, etc. and strive to make an up-to-date and flexible cartography of thematic creation and programming in the performing arts Network of Cities for Artistic Creation CreArt (Network of Cities for Artistic Creation) responds to a need amongst European cultural institutions: to maximise the economic, social and cultural contribution visual arts can make by facilitating artists, managers, industry and the general public to create, present and enjoy art work, as well as to access training and education through seminars, artists residences, workshops and research and analysis programmes. CreArt partners also share a common objective: to promote, from the solid base of their local reality, a competitive offer in the European and international creative industries sector. From a variety of cultures and contexts, and based on public-private partnerships, CreArt works towards a single cultural currency across its European network. CreArt is a solid network of 14 partner cities and institutions (11 countries), working in medium size urban areas, representative of Europe s cultural diversity and richness, offering a simple and sustainable approach to these challenges, based on direct communication and networking by the main participants in the creative process, with the use of local resources and the necessary initial collaboration of EU.The work plan of CreArt include 13 different activities belonging to one of the 5 general actions: a) Project coordination, management and evaluation; b) Analysis of management models to support visual arts & creativity in Europe; c) Training, innovation and experimentation programme for the promotion of creativity; d) CreArt European Travelling Exhibitions; and e) Dissemination and transfer of activities and results. All the work is done under a clear methodology focused in the 5 basic stages of the creativity improving process: starting with the identification (balancing clarity of need with potential for benefit in the search of the creative core in each community), and then passing to training and innovation, exchange and analysis, and finally dissemination and exhibition.

European Route of Historic Theatres European Route of Historic Theatres Theatre has been a corner stone of European culture for over 2500 years. The buildings created for this art mirror the changes of society in their architecture. By looking at and understanding this built heritage, we can therefore understand our history. The architectural form we are still using today originated in Italy around 1600 and spread through-out Europe, till this theatre building became one of the very few truly European building types a common European heritage.as such, theatres are an expression of European unity. At the same time, the different styles in decoration in the various countries testify to diversity.16 partners from 12 countries are now joining forces to put this heritage into the focus of attention. We shall conduct research and present the first ever catalogue of all still existing historic theatres in Europe; We shall select the most interesting theatre buildings and line them up on one continuous cultural tourism route that spans all of Europe; We shall promote the European Route in many European countries; We shall create a travelling exhibition that presents this heritage in context, entitled The history of Europe told by its theatres ; And while doing all this, we shall initiate cooperation among the partners and about 120 theatres in over 30 countries.in doing so, we are extending and completing two past projects supported by the EU: the initial European Route of Historic Theatres ( , headed by PERSPECTIV, DE) that has already linked 40 outstanding historic theatres in eight countries the project Theatre architecture in Central Europe ( , headed by the National Theatre Prague, CZ) that has produced an online catalogue of theatres in five Central European countries.we are now combining the expertise from both projects and include partners in other countries to make visible the European Union of historic theatres The main goal of this multiannual project is the creation of the necessary conditions for the circulation of European music of any kind, as well as the transnational mobility of musicians, through the cooperation of 12 important European music organisations. In order to fulfil the goals of the project a series of actions will be developed a) an online platform for dissemination and exploitation of rich music material that they possess and b) a series of innovative mobility actions, events and exchanges supporting the transnational mobility of musicians and music professionals.the MINSTREL - Music project activities include: 1) Trans-national circulation of music works. Creation of a cooperation internet platform targeting the promotion and Network Supporting Transnational dissemination of the Music Organisations digital archives.2) Trans-national mobility actionsa. Digital Promotion database of music ensembles. b. exchange and dissemination of music Resources at European Level Artists 'composers' residency programme (one person or groups (artists- colonies). c. Organisation of a series of transnational and mobility events.event type 1) 'Music exchanges' - During a selected 'celebration' period as series of events are organized in one country promoting the music of another country. Event type 2) 'Music platform' events promoting the musicians of a specific country to the local and international music industry and managers. Event type 3) Collective transnational events This type of events will be organized from one partner but with contribution of all partners. Exchange of Professionals in the music sectord. Collection and dissemination of local music industry and management informationdevelop an open digital database of all local music events organizers, promoters and producers. 3) Cooperation and Dissemination actions: Meetings of professionals, Conferences and Workshops, Publications, Organisation of a common stand at the big music events and fora.

VOICE - Vision on Innovation for Choral music in Europe VOICE Vision On Innovation for Choral music in Europe is a European project for the sustainable development and innovation of choral singing, a first-time major cooperation between choral operators, music educators and researchers. The aims of VOICE are to encourage new events and methods and the creation of innovative repertoire, promote the voice as universal instrument, improve the quality of vocal music, enable transnational mobility and circulation of (young) musicians and choral works, enhance the dialogue between cultures and generations as well as the exchange of expertise and develop new tools for the promotion of singing in music education. VOICE will invest in research on the voice in partnership with universities and collect data on choral life in Europe. The 14 partners will spread the results to develop a new vision on choral singing in Europe. VOICE includes activities in 11 countries, which will attract thousands of participants from around 50 countries and reach large audiences: JOINING VOICES with a major festival in Italy and an Urban Youth Festival in Sweden EXCELLENCE IN THE VOICE A showcase for vocal excellence in France RAISING THE VOICE FOR INTEGRATION - Singing as a tool for reconciliation in Cyprus TRAINING VOICES with two sessions of the Eurochoir for young singers in Czech Republic and Hungary, training courses for conductors and managers in Austria, France, Italy and Sweden, a conference on Mediterranean Music in Spain, a vocal training programme for teachers and cooperation with the world of education in Belgium and a symposium on music education in Hungary. VOICE RESEARCH with programmes on the growth of young people in relation to their singing voice and on vocal health of amateur singers, pursued by research institutions in Belgium and the UK. VOICE AND FAMILY with an international collection of lullabies coordinated from Germany A VOICE FOR CHORAL MUSIC IN EUROPE with databases on choral life in Europe Ulysses - a European odyssey with young artists for new music The Ulysses network federates European partners involved in the support and promotion of young artists. These partners play a fundamental role in the recognizing, accompanying, professionalizing, and developing of the carriers of young European composers and performers. The network is composed of 14 partner institutions from 10 European countries (academies, summer schools, support programs, orchestras, choirs, ensembles or festivals) and more than 90 international associated partners.the project's main ambition is to promote contemporary classical music in Europe by developing innovative forms of cross-border musical creation and encouraging audience development. Through its activities, the Ulysses project will foster the mobility of 400 young artists throughout Europe, through 280 performances. The network will also support the development and the European aspect of the artists' careers, by providing them with professional production conditions, connections with renowned classical music artists and venues, and activities with an inherent European dimension.moreover, this initiative will encourage innovation in the creation of new music via mediation activities, encounters between young and confirmed artists, creative performances in public spaces, the use of new technology and experimentations, open workshops and rehearsals, and special projects for young musicians. It will also reinforce the visibility of new works towards the audience through various channels (venues, radios, web, films, recordings, interviews), and support the development of interdisciplinary art forms (music and theatre, dance, visual arts).an online platform dedicated to artists and professionals will also be developed in order to meet the needs that have been identified. It will feature a public database on composers and their works, an online magazine about musical creation, a professional hub for European producers and distributers, and a management tool for competition panels.

Next Step - The Second Generation Next Step, the Second Generationenables 8 European festivals to join forces to sustain the artistic renewal of performing arts in Europe by stimulating co-production and the transnational circulation of new work by the European artists of tomorrow.the festivals focus on international artistic production and function as laboratories for new trends in the arts: they take risks and introduce artists to a wide and open-minded audience in an exceptional social space in a limited period of time. They build bridges between a local audience and an international scene. However, the national financial support does not permit these festivals to exploit their full potential as a springboard for emerging European artists. As artists transgress borders' esthetical, geographical, social or political-they contribute substantially to the development of a European cultural space and a European identity. The generation Next Step focuses on has already proved its potential and is ready to explore new directions, a larger scale, or other audiences. However, local conditions can rarely respond to their ambitions: the artistic and financial risks are too high or more financial national support can't be ensured. At this stage Next Step can make a difference, by co-producing, providing important financial footing, and guaranteeing circulation and international visibility.furthermore, the festivals will offer residencies to (non-)european artists, as an additional means to encourage the renewal of the international arts scene. We extend this reflection to European critics during two international master classes.the running Next Step ( ) already enabled a of artists to acquire a significant position within the European performing arts, each with his own voice. But still: we are convinced we can have a wider impact. To have a lasting, sustaining effect on a cultural landscape, a longer term is needed. Therefore, we strongly believe in the continuation of this network EuroVision - Museums Exhibiting Europe The 'Eurovision - Museums exhibit Europe' (EMEE) project explores an innovative interdisciplinary approach for national and regional museums to re-interpret their objects in a broader context of European history. The instrumentarium necessary for this is developed by an international, trans-sectoral culture network and presented to the visitor in the "Eurovision Lab." 'One Object ' Many Visions ' Eurovisions'.The Europeanisation of the contentual object presentation also involves a multi-perspective and synaesthetic way of presenting that invites the visitor to actively participate in the museum and takes down barriers between the museum and (non)-visitor groups. The Eurovision Lab. thereby reacts to European societies' cultural diversity and makes the museum a site of intercultural dialogue. The Eurovision Lab. is experimental in nature and is taking place in all partner institutions. It involves a variety of different activities with public appeal (e.g. exhibition projects, cultural performances) which put into practice the concept of 'change of perspective' (COP) for Europeanisation of museum work with its three components: 1. In the object presentation several semantic levels (regional, national, European) are layered on top of each other in order to question one-dimensional patterns of meaning. 2. Museum experts take up the visitor's perspective and open up ways of asserting the diversity of perspectives, the cultural heterogenity and the creative potential of amateurs in museum work. 3. After all, COP is achieved by changing the contexts of the objects by means of their international exchange and by ensuring mobility of the cultural workers involved in order to overcome the narrowness of national perspectives. The project work has three phases: Starting with the collaborative conception of COP tool kits via the concretisation in exemplary modules towards the implementation of the Eurovision Lab. and the conception of trainings courses.

keðja keðja is a collaboration between 11 Nordic and Baltic contemporary dance organisations. The aim is to develop and strengthen the dance scene of the region. The project has 4 strands: -1.) 3 Encounters, -seminars with app. 200 participants. The Encounters emphasize networking and are a place for sharing results of the other keðja activities as well as being the place for several of them to take place. In this way a fertile atmosphere is created, connecting people from many areas of the contemporary dance world to each other. Encounters take place in Tallinn, Klaipeda and Mariehamn. 2) Think Tanks & Mentoring Scheme. The Think Tanks gather competent people within the sector asking them to analyze different relevant issues and come up with concrete action plans to develop the infrastructure of the dance field. The Mentoring Scheme stimulates professional growth of not-so-experienced dance producers/managers via direct mentoring/coaching by experienced and knowledgeable persons from the dance/performing arts sector. 3) Reading Dance Writing Dance is a of workshops/labs, publications on-line and network activities that aims at strengthening the critical discourse on and around dance. Different Lab activities will take place in 8 countries, developing language, methods and capacity reg. how dance is understood, written about and disseminated. Actual dance performances etc. are used as case-studies. A network of people interested in dance writing is also developed.4) Wilderness Dance. A residency programme taking place in 10 locations in the Nordic-Baltic region, all of them out-side of the capitals, that is in smaller towns or villages where dance is rarely presented, -in close proximity to nature and wilderness. The residencies bring artists from other regions to develop work in collaboration with the local community. A selection of suitable works are towards the end of the project period toured to Nordic-Baltic presentation platforms Soft Control Soft Control (SC) is planned as a multi-annual cultural project aimed at actualising culture phenomena which are emergent when art, science and public awareness are interconnected.sc opens scientific labs and theory to artists and different educational entities to a wider audience. SC entails interacting with and inviting to active participation different target audiences, especially youngsters, students, and the elderly. SC is a multiannual cultural performance, an European showcase where artists/cultural workers/others willing to learn what researchers are doing and thinking, and researchers, willing to share and experience creative forms of artistic experimentation and construction, come together in European locations to explore, work, discuss, listen and share ideas and findings. Culture and science as branches can intertwine, constructively sharing cultural models of critical thinking, activism and experimentation with scientific methods, research and knowledge. A better understanding of what is going on in our bodies, environment and society can be achieved by sharing knowledge on how to communicate with different target groups, opening closed scientific circles, displaying complex problems with creative and practical methods. A special significance is gained by artistic strategies aimed at shaping a new human right: the right to re-invent and rewrite the very basics of technological myth. This right implies a potential to create new forms and new identities in a fully independent, artistic, creative manner. Everyday life has become so intimately interwoven with complex technological ecologies that we can no longer consider technology as the alienating other. The idea that we 'inhabit' technological ecologies emphasises our connectedness to our environment (material, natural, technological) and our dependence on the resources available there (material, energetic, biological, cultural). Mastering these conditions is vital to our survival on this planet.
