2 Language technology: A game changer for multilingual ODeL? Presenter: Prof Laurette Pretorius Professor of Computer Science, SIRGS, CGS We celebrate our language diversity and are in the fortunate position of having eleven South African languages enshrined in the Constitution. However, sustaining and extending this multilingualism to all walks of life and all societies, has turned out to be a real challenge. The Higher Education sector has also had its fair share of language issues and challenges, of which many are still unresolved. Moreover, Unisa s ODeL teaching and learning model is perfectly positioned to embrace multilingualism without having to deal with, for example, the complexities of physical multilingual classrooms and the diverse language proficiencies of learners and teachers alike. Language technology comprises computational methods, computer programs and electronic devices that are specialised for analysing, understanding, producing or modifying texts and speech. These systems are, ipso facto, based on knowledge of human language and often also the domains of discourse. In short, the goal of language technology is to perform useful tasks involving human language. Since ODeL happens through technology and in digital space, language technology offers unique opportunities for transacting in and across multiple languages in ever more creative and innovative ways. Language technology can indeed be a game changer for multilingual ODeL. In this short presentation, I share a few ideas of how we as academics and students can work together to position Unisa as a leader in this strategic field, both in South Africa and on the African continent.

3 Scholarship of the Doctoral Teaching and Learning for sustaining our tomorrow Presenter: Prof Vitallis Chikoko Educational Leadership, University of KwaZulu-Natal

4 A community engaged research approach to demonstrating energy technology for health, safety and peace promotion: An Inter-College Collaboration Presenter: Sarah Day Researcher (ISHS) South Africans in dense low-income urban settlements typically contend with various health, safety, and violence related challenges in their daily lives. Addressing infrastructural challenges and provision of material needs are important catalysts for better welfare, violence reduction and peaceful social relations. One of the glaring material deprivations in informal settlements is energy poverty, that is, the lack of access to safe, cost-effective and sustainable modern energy services. People in energy poverty environments face disproportionate risks for health impairment arising from household air pollution and burn injuries, and property losses from conflagrations. Furthermore, energy poverty is associated with violent protests as desperate members of community demand for basic energy services. The improvement of safe energy access therefore has the potential to promote health and wellbeing, sustainable livelihoods, and peaceful social relationships. Our community engaged-study is directed at the development, implementation, and evaluation of renewable energy technologies that utilise local resources to provide safe and cost-effective energy in selected impoverished communities. The project follows a participatory approach whereby community based actors participate in the development, implementation and evaluations of the intervention suite. The research is an inter-department collaboration between CGS Institute for Social and Health Sciences (ISHS) and CSET IDEAS. In this session we will use a documentary, power points and a panel discussion to talk about the place of energy technologies in health, safety and peace promotion. Program Time Activity Responsible Session Chair: Prof Lu-Anne Swart Researcher, UNISA ISHS 11:15-11:20 ISHS research in Thembelihle Sarah Day informal settlement 11:20 11:25 Safe community energization Sarah Day documentary 11:25 11:30 Results of formative evaluations David Kimemia 11:30 12:00 Panel discussion Chairperson: Lu-Anne Swart Panellists: Miss Zandile Chuma ECD, Thembelihle community Miss Simpiwe Zwane TCC, Thembelihle community Dr Celestin Sempunga, UNISA IDEAS Dr David Kimemia, SAMRC VIPRU- UNISA ISHS

5 ISTEs Winter School: A Community engaged research project Presenter: Prof David Mogari Acting Head: Institute for Science and Technology Education (ISTE) ISTE Winter School is a research based content and pedagogical knowledge intervention programme designed to alleviate teachers` challenges towards effective teaching of Mathematics, Natural Science, Physical Science, Life Science, Mathematical literacy, and GET Technology in the schools. The Winter School adopts an iterative approach where feedback from participating teachers informed the planning and design of the following year s edition. The programme is based on the teachers needs; conducted by facilitators who are significantly versed in the teaching and learning conditions in schools; has interactive sessions that are largely participantcentred; and takes place yearly over 5days of 8hours each.
