2 The Dr. Fannie Hewlett Award celebrates racial and ethnic diversity by recognizing student courage, leadership and contribution to a culture of inclusion at Belmont University. Dr. Hewlett grew up in Bay Minette, Alabama, and decided to come to Belmont College, some 420 miles away from her home, after finding a brochure for the school in her mailbox. Though she hadn t visited Belmont and didn t know where Nashville was, she arranged for transportation and embarked on a journey of a lifetime. Dr. Hewlett earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and English from Belmont College in 1970, becoming the first African-American woman to graduate from the school. She then earned her Master of Arts degree in Clinical and School Psychology from Fisk University in 1975 and a Doctorate in Education in Educational Administration and Supervision from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in Dr. Hewlett then completed post-doctoral studies in Community College Leadership at the University of Texas at Austin in This award celebrates Dr. Hewlett s leadership and character by recognizing one undergraduate and one graduate student who exemplify impressive courage and leadership and have significantly contributed to racial and ethnic inclusion across Belmont s campus. Eligibility The nominee must be a current Belmont student. The nominee must have been enrolled as a Belmont student for at least 2 semesters. The nominee must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0. This will be checked upon receiving the student s nomination. The nominee must be in good standing with the Dean of Students Office. Award Criteria The Dr. Fannie Hewlett Award is given to one undergraduate and one graduate student that have demonstrated the following attributes: Exemplary leadership Courage & tenacity Civic engagement Scholarship and high academic achievement Faithful servant leadership Character Contribution to racial and ethnic inclusion Enclosed you will find a nomination form (please make additional copies if needed.) Nominations should be descriptive and thorough. You may use additional pages if necessary. In the event your nominee is selected, excerpts from you nomination may be used in the presentation of the award at the annual Scholarship Day ceremony. Nomination forms are due to the Office of the Vice President & Chief of Staff (Freeman Hall 205) by 4:30pm, Friday, March 31, 2016 (nominations received after March 31 st will not be considered).
