Valorization of X-Ray Beams from Laser Plasma Accelerator ELIMEDICS 2016 March 3-4, 2016,Dolní Břežany Laser Plasma Technologies François Sylla, PhD
Outline Forword: valorization, applications, innovation Positioning of the effort Example of XNDT from Laser Plasma Accelerator Towards a laser-based platform of medical interest Conclusion 2
Valorization and applications Valorization: «action of giving value to», similar to «Applications» Not «laser plasma field» Applications Proton radiography Electron diffraction We mean: «use out of the field by a broader and non-expert public» Societal impact Economic impact Tool for Innovation How to proceed? 3
Innovation = network action Sociology of innovation: very active area of research (in particular in France with several CNRS laboratories). Science/Technology: Michel Callon, Science and network, genesis and circulation of scientific acts, Editions La Découverte (1989). «A technical innovation depends upon the existence of a network that will integrate it, and gives an original sense to it» (Philippe Bernoux, Sociology of organisations, chap. 8, p. 250, Editions Points (2009) Valorization key asset seems to be the existence of a network acting to stabilize a novelty. Numerous competences (beyond the aboratory) to bring a novelty to society and market What novelty is it about in fact? 4
Outline Forword: valorization, applications, innovation Positioning of the effort Example of XNDT from Laser Plasma Accelerator Towards a laser-based platform of medical interest Conclusion 5
Applications of industrial accelerators Opportunity for innovation Field distribution units in the world units for industry and R&D 2000 units sold/year Revenue > 2,2 G$ et 4% CAGR Ref: Hamm, Industrial Accelerators and their applications, World Scientific (2012) 6
Applications of industrial accelerators Opportunity for innovation Field distribution Familiar to the industry Which innovation? How mature would LPA be? Network? Innovative for the industry Ref: Hamm, Industrial Accelerators and their applications, World Scientific (2012) 7

NDT services offer with prototype platform (2015) High spatial resolution High temporal resolution Tunable gamma ray beam Accessible platform for experiments Source size < 150 µm Burst duration ~100 fs Tunable energy MeV Reptition rate 1 Hz Dose ~2mGy/shot Scientific references Döpp et al, NIMA, In Press (2016) Ben-Ismael et al, NIMA, 629, (2011) Glinec et al, PRL. 94, (2005) 14
Overview of the valorization effort for laser-based XNDT Proof-of-Concept & laboratory developements Pre-project: Valorization efforts Network of end-users et partners Areva, EDF, CEA, Thales, Renault, CTIF, CTIM, Airbus, Safran Messier Bugatti, Schlumberger, LOA, PEI, SourceLAB, R&D 2018 SHERIL Project Industrialization Commercialisation Development of an industrial NDT prototype platform at LOA Funded by DGA, consortium with Pinette Emidecau Industrie, SourceLAB, LOA NDT services with prototype Sales of fully equipped fixed plateforms Sales of mobile platform In-Situ NDT services 15
Outline Forword: valorization, applications, innovation Positioning of the effort Example of XNDT at LOA/SourceLAB Towards a laser-based platform of medical interest Conclusion 16
Laser-based phase contrast imaging proof-of-concept in the lab with betatron (2011) E~10 kev Ref: Fourmaux et al.,opt. Lett. 36, 2426 (2011)
Laser-based phase contrast imaging proof-of-concept in the lab with Compton (2016?) E~100 kev LOA and SourceLAB are to explore applications of laser plasma technology while doing proof-of-concept experiments at the same time : To carry out an international market study for a go-to-market strategy To compare standard vs laser plasma X-ray phase imaging on murine models To build an early expert network with end-users V. Malka - ERC-PoC XMED (2015) Ref: Bech et al., Scientific Report, (2013)
Outline Forword: valorization, applications, innovation Positioning of the effort Example of XNDT at LOA/SourceLAB Towards a laser-based platform of medical interest Conclusion 19
Concluding remarks In general, valorization towards applications (as part of an innovation strategy) is a collective activity within a framework Industry Development Exploitation (commercial) Standardization Valorization Translation Symetrization Organization Laboratory Research Exploration Teaching Valorization of Laser-based gamma-radiography needed to create a spin-off and to build up a network of expert industrials to boost the development of an original and dedicated system (novel laser, novel targetry, novel manipulator, novel detector). For the medical field (longer timescale), a network activation of expert partners (industrial, venture capitalists) is launched at the time as the laboratory experiments are carried out. 20
