The seventh Balkan Print Forum event under the patronage of manroland and the second InPEQ meeting will take place on October 18 19, 2012 in Sofia, Bulgaria. Info: Balkan Print Forum Dehnberger Forum 2011 was organised by Frey printcom and manroland. Each of the 150 guests knew already that it had never been boring at the Dehnberger forum. The event is an industry highlight and is famous for its groundbreaking and controversial discussion about print and social issues. Frey printcom and manroland had invited for the sixth time media industry executives to the Dehnberger Court Theatre in Nuremberg. They have already tackled consequently their business fortune: the top-class participants, forwardlooking speakers from printing press production, printing and publishing companies. Their experiences, the resulting business strategies and visions followed the guests spellbound. The attention of the audience has been also guaranteed by the entertaining and provocative aegis of the moderator and stage director Michael Dömer. With its know-how he brought it to the point: Today the printing industry needs courage, coupled with a new business model and corporate responsibility. There is no room for excess or sadness. "Courage is doing well in the time of changing media consumption" Gerd Finkbeiner, Chairman of the Executive Board, manroland AG, reported about the successful restructuring of the company and pointed out the power of innovation in the printing industry. Right now it is required and needed from the printing companies and from the whole printing industry "courage and confidence in order to create a perspective". Networks and partnerships are giving thereby the necessary vigour. New forms of advertising such as multisensoric advertisements can be jointly brought to the market more effectively as well as technological leaps in printing presses to be converted into absolutely tailor-made solutions for the customers. An example of this is the 96-page web press. With this machine Johannes Helmberger, CEO of Fr. Ant. Niedermayr, Graphische Kunstanstalt, Regensburg, will "configurate the market instead of managing the costs". The investment offers by the customer the demanded added value and the printer is right away positioned far more than a few inches ahead of the competition. A similar way has been chosen by Gmähle-Scheel print media in Waiblingen. The company has sought and
8 8 has found its chances by the diversification of the core business. Manager Heinz Wurzel has explained how and why they have lined up with wide variety of web and versatile media services. eminently great in the sector of women's publications. Electronic media and print complement one another, the much-discussed substitution does not occur. That was the attitude for the future of Christoph Keese, Group General Manager Public Affairs, Axel Springer AG. Consequently, the company is building up on a multi-channel strategy and is today a leader in print and newspaper Apps. With the App offer can be generated new audiences and increasing revenues. Are the readers who buy both print and Apps, the veritable model of success, or is that only a wishful thinking? Only the brave will find this out. Info: manroland AG Gerd Finkbeiner, CEO of manroland, opened the round of high-class lectures with a passionate appeal to continue with the progress. manroland, photo: Ingo Woelk. 10 10 Joint WPCF - PrintCity Environmental Conference at drupa 2012 The World Print & Communication Forum (WPCF) and the PrintCity Alliance have announced that they will be jointly organising an International Environmental Conference during the 2012 drupa exhibition in Düsseldorf. This co-operation underlines that effective responses on these issues requires creative cooperation across the industry process chain. The Lean & Green International Environmental Conference will focus on the duality of mutual economic and environmental benefits (Lean & Green) as an industry strategy. Specialised speakers from both within and external to the printing and paper industry will provide attendees with information and incentives to take this holistic business approach. The conference programme will be organised in three sessions: Environmental Footprint, Sustainability Challenge, Labels and Certifications. The conference will be on Thursday, May 10, 2012, from 09:00-15:00 in the drupa Congress Centre. The conference is a not-for-profit event that will only cost 175 plus German VAT (19%) to cover event expenses and refreshments (including a light lunch). Places are limited and can be reserved now on our event registration page: Benefits from Conference Attendance This joint WPCF/PrintCity conference is a unique opportunity to gain valuable knowledge in the fields of environmental and lean production. Presentations will highlight latest knowledge, business benefits and best practice opportunities. Attendees will benefit from direct access to some of the world s leading speakers in these fields during drupa. Beatrice Klose, Secretary General of the WPCF, states that, Improving your environmental performance also leads to compelling business opportunities to reduce costs, increase competitiveness, become more innovative and enhance staff and customer confidence. Our research and experience demonstrates that there is a direct correlation from a Lean & Green approach that provides strong benefits across the industry value chain. The holistic management of economic & environmental issues is a key to sustainability, and also impacts on the use of print as a medium, adds John Dangelmaier, President of PrintCity. The World Print & Communication Forum (WPCF) is an association created by the world s major transnational and regional printing associations. The objectives of the WPCF are to form a single global exchange platform for the printing and communication industry between the different players and to stage conferences to analyse market trends and business opportunities. The founding members of WPCF include: Conlatingraf, representing South America; Intergraf, representing European Interests; Printing Industries of America, for the North American continent; and national associations from Australia, China, Hong Kong SAR, India, Japan, and South Africa. The PrintCity Alliance is active in Lean Manufacturing and Environmental issues. Some of its publications include: Carbon Footprint & Energy Reduction for the Graphic Industry Value Chain, Sustainability, Energy & Environment, Energy Efficiency Optimisation for Web Offset Printers. These and other PrintCity publications are available from Info: PrintCity IFRA Expo: world premiere of COLORMAN e:line Future-oriented solutions from manroland, ppi Media and Océ Also this year, IFRA Expo was a highlight for manroland. Along with subsidiary company ppi Media and digital printing partner Océ, the team presented groundbreaking printing systems and services on a crowded stand. COLORMAN e:line: that s the name of the new flagship for newspaper printing that manroland presented as a world premiere. The first press of this type in blanket-to-blanket design and with a totally new appearance will be installed in 2012 at the Allgäuer Zeitungsverlag in Kempten, Germany. The concept
11 11 is based on modular packages that can be retrofitted, automation modules for example. Automation with autoprint was another important topic at the show. Meanwhile twelve newspaper printing houses are producing with this system that was introduced at IFRA Expo And more are joining them: the WAZ Mediengruppe for example is investing a low double-digit million euro sum in two 48-page COLORMAN, XXL autoprint presses that will be installed in a completely new building. Under the term pressupdate, manroland also offers services for presses in the field: with Refurbishment, presses are thoroughly checked and refurbished, whereas Retrofit offers modernization. Within the scope of Reconfiguration, new manroland technology can also be combined well with newspaper printing systems from other manufacturers. And then there are Upgrade solutions. On the second day of the show, customers and visitors had the opportunity to visit Herold Druck and see a COLORMAN, XXL autoprint in action. Great interest in ppi Media and Océ The show was a great success: in many interesting and promising project discussions at IFRA Expo, manroland, ppi media and Océ demonstrated how their respective expertise and technologies can be combined to benefit customers. ppi Media IFRA Expo was a complete success for manroland s subsidiary company ppi Media. Two large orders were booked during the show: ppi Media will install the centralized planning and production system PlanPag, and the classified pagination system AdPag, at Media Norge AS in Norway. The Schwäbischer Verlag is to extend its AdMan ad production system with a module for integrating third-party jobs, and has also ordered the preflight check solution pdfperfect. On the show stand, the Hamburg-based software specialist ppi Media demonstrated among other things the customer portal OM portal for order planning and production, as well as the new solution Cockpit mediapreflight for all media channels. Further highlights were AdX, the cross-media ad solution that can be integrated with SAP, and the Content-X editorial solution. manroland s cooperation partner Océ placed the focus on digital newspaper printing. The company has extended its inkjet portfolio and launched the new systems Océ ColorStream 3500, Océ JetStream 1400 and Océ JetStream 3000 onto the market. This permits up to 2140 tabloid newspapers each with 36 pages to be printed per hour, which is efficient not only for special-interest topics and short runs. Moreover, already ten years ago Océ established the Digital Newspaper Network (DNN) that enables international newspapers to be printed directly at a remote location close to the readers. From November this year, the Swiss Post will be printing personalized newspapers with an Océ JetStream And from December 2011, Interval, a French print services provider, is to produce national and international newspapers by digital printing on an Océ JetStream Marcus Brehm from the Allgäuer Zeitungsverlag talking with Gerd Finkbeiner at the manroland press conference. manroland, photo: Andy Buchwald.
