From the large number of important events that accompanies our business, interpack in Dusseldorf stands out as a highlight. The fair, which attracted packaging experts from around the world in May was the perfect setting to position ourselves as a complete provider and present our new developments in the FFS Segment the high performance bagging machine TOPAS SL, the layer palletizer PLATINUM and the stretch hood machine ARGON. Many of you formed a long lasting impression at the booth in Dusseldorf and the in-house EXPO of our new bagging line, which is still in your minds now. We will report on both events in detail in this issue. interpack 2014 was also remarkable for the fact that, for the second time already, it offered a broad forum to the SAVE FOOD initiative, which advocates responsible food handling. Since last interpack, the initiative organised by Messe Dusseldorf GmbH and FOA* was successful with the press and public, on one hand raising awareness of the issue of global food loss as a cause for hunger and on the other hand developing solutions and initiating concrete improvement projects. Beyond this original concern, a discussion has been triggered on food safety and health protection. The shortcomings in this area were brought to our attention not least by the various food scandals last year. Meanwhile there is an increasing recognition among consumers that flexible packaging can do a lot to solve these problems. This ranges from PP-woven sacks that can safely store crops against pests over paper sacks with a PE liner bag that hygienically carry milk powder and pharmaceutical products, tamper-proof and free from contamination, to barrier packaging in the consumer sector that ensures the shelf life of meat, cheese and other foods without cooling. For the production of these products and many other customised packaging options that require a variety of different materials and manufacturing technologies, we offer the right solutions, for example complete woven bag making machines from our subsidiary BSW, tubing machines from the 81-series with the completely modernised liner bag system ROTALINER or multi-layer barrier film extrusion lines OPTIMEX, VAREX, AQUAREX and FILMEX. By focussing on the flexible packaging while diversifying the three product areas, extrusion, printing and converting machines, we frequently exploit synergies that lead to functionally and economically superior concepts. Thus, we are able to give more comprehensive and more differentiated answers to pressing questions of our society than any other machine manufacturing company in this segment. In our cover story we report on the inauguration of Windmoeller & Hoelscher Machinery (Taicang), our new branch in the China. Founded With effect from 1 January 2014, Windmöller & Hölscher has set up its own subsidiary in the Far East: The Windmoeller & Hoelscher Machinery (Taicang) Co. Ltd. With this step we want to improve our proximity to the Chinese market while also documenting the importance we attach to this ever growing market, a successful development in which W & H would like to participate, explain Dr. Jürgen Vutz, Chairman of the W & H Management Board, and Managing Director Peter Steinbeck. The official inauguration of the new branch was celebrated with a grand opening party on the 23rd April, the evening of the first day of Chinaplas. About 200 customers from all over China were invited and together with W & H employees enjoyed not just excellent food, but also a varied evening program that strictly followed Chinese tradition: Drummers opened the ceremony, a masked dancer presented elements of the Szechuan Opera and there had to be a Chinese lion. Under the expert guidance of the Chinese moderator, Dr. Jürgen Vutz and Michael Fischer, Managing Director of W & H Asia-Pacific, symboli- cally opened its eyes, to bring the new company luck and prosperity. The new W & H branch is located in Taicang, about 50 km from the centre of Shanghai. Acting as a sales and service centre, W & H Machinery (Taicang) will take on all tasks and activities that were handled by Johs. Rieckermann, W & H s longtime representative in China. The Rieckermann staff so far in charge of W & H affairs has been taken over by the new W & H subsidiary to ensure continuity for W & H customers in China. This also goes for the Management Board, General Manager Jinghui Dai, Sales Manager Klaus Meyer and Service Manager George Yang, all of whom do have experience in the Chinese market. W & H Machinery (Taicang) will take care of new machinery sales as well as spare and replacement parts for the complete W & H sales program, another domain being the service sector, including the installation of new equipment as well as maintenance and repair. In the future, blown film die service and customer training courses et al. will be offered on site. The response from our Chinese customers in the first few months after the opening of W & H Taicang has been very positive, says a pleased Jinghui Dai. Customers recognise our commitment and appreciate having their supplier on site now, and we appreciate and welcome it. ARGON s special stretching technology convinces the trade visitors. THE INTEREST IN THE HIGH PERFORMANCE LINE IS HUGE The unveiling of our surprise was a great success! At interpack in May this year, the world s best known trade fair for the packaging industry, the well-kept secret was revealed: In the FFS segment W & H enters the market as a complete line supplier, offering a complete bagging line with the TOPAS SL, which featured in last year s FFS exhibit, the newly developed palletizer PLATINUM and the stretch hood machine ARGON. As such, W & H is now in position to cover the entire packaging process, from the silo outlet to the full pallet, ready for shipment. The news made everyone in the industry take note, as nobody had been expecting such a development. This expansion of our product portfolio was very well received by our customers, said Managing Director, Peter Steinbeck, summarising the feedback we received from all regions whilst at interpack. Our customers appreciate the advantage of having to negotiate future investments for highperformance bagging machines with only one partner, who takes over full project responsibility. The big advantag of a single system supplier is the consistency of technology and operation, including the possibility of data-related networking, offering a central point of contact for maintenance and spare parts, something our customers are aware of. While at interpack the three individual machines were displayed, interested customers could experience the complete line in full operation at W & H in Lengerich. This display allowed the international clientele not to miss the news that had electrified the packaging scene. 165 customers from 70 companies from 29 countries were able to get a first hand image of the new integrated high performance line at the EXPO. They not only experienced a perfect demonstration, but also registered that W & H and their new development, with a palletizing capacity of up to 2,800 bags / h, fine-tuned to the speed of the TOPAS SL, were at the forefront of performance development. With this performance, the modular layer palletizer PLATINUM sets a new standard for the palletizing of bags, because compared to other models this level of performance was achieved without restricting the size range of bagging. Whilst PLATINUM was developed by W & H, the stretch hood machine ARGON was created as a result of a cooperation with the Danish company Lachenmeier. When adapting the Lachenmeier product for the W & H design line, ARGON combines the advantages of a W & H machine with the technical and procedural knowhow of the world market leader in load securing systems. ARGON scores with low space requirements and easy maintenance. Its special stretching technology is suitable for a wide range of film thicknesses and plays to its strengths particularly when using thinner films. The first few months after interpack have shown us that the step towards full integrated supply in the FFS segment was more than right, is the happy conclusion of Dr. Jürgen Vutz, chairman of the W & H management board. This was also confirmed by Rafael Imberg, sales manager for the FFS area: The interest in the high performance line is huge. We have been able to lead many very concrete discussions and have already concluded our first orders. 4

5 extra autumn 2014 issue 23 innovation new developments For Printing and Converting new vistaflex CX in 2.2 m Print WidtH Excellent print quality, even at print speeds of up to 800m / min, and extremely fast job changeovers for large format prints through the innovative robotic handling system, VISTA-PORT, are the main unique selling points of the new VISTAFLEX CX, the latest model from the successful VISTFALEX series. The great advantages of the VISTAFLEX s design concept over conventional sleeve machines become even more evident with the wide VISTAFLEX CX, with its maximum print width of 2.2m and the maximum print repeat length of 1.25 m. Whilst conventional machines are pushed to their limits with the large dimensions and weights of the wide print cylinders, adapters and sleeves, especially during job changes, the job changeover on the VISTAFLEX CX remains safe, ergonomic and extremely fast even with extreme print repeat lengths and printing widths. The VISTAFLEX CX is therefore the solution in wide format printing of flexible packaging and specialty films, such as breathable films. THE MAIN ADVANTAGES OF THE VISTAFLEX S DESIGN CONCEPT BECOME EVEN MORE EVIDENT WITH THE WIDE MACHINE ad 8370 new large Format Bottomer WitH digital Pasting Despite the trend towards even smaller sack formats, there is still a need for a bottomer, that can do all. Therefore designers at W & H have developed a solution on the basis of the AD 8330, which basically involves an extension of the format range. The new large format universal bottomer, AD 8370, features the nozzle application system DIGITAL PASTING. With this development W & H further advance the platform strategy for the construction of bottomers, which commenced with the AD 8310 / AD 8320 / AD 8330-series. The AD 8370, whose prototype will be unveiled next year, succeeds the AD 2379 which was withdrawn from the sales programme a few years ago. It provides the latest process- and software technology that our customers are used to from the AD As a result of its technical proximity to the aforementioned machines, the AD 8370 not only benefits from the platform strategy by using components of the same part family, but it can also be handled and controlled by operators and maintenance staff faster and more easily. It will be able to produce bottom widths up to 25 cm, sack widths up to 72 cm and bottom centre distances up to 120 cm and will come with fully equipped valve and hinge units and optional inner patch devices. 5

6 Printing success stories CartoteCniCa veneta spa invest in a Heliostar s For a long time the Italian rotogravure market was dominated by local manufacturers a situation that has changed fundamentally in recent years. With the HELIOSTAR S, W & H have developed a modular rotogravure printing press, which has no less managed to convince the Italian rotogravure printers. In the last year alone, three machines were sold to leading packaging printers in Italy. Cartotecnica Veneta SpA decided to invest in an 11-colour HELIOSTAR S with inline lamination due to the technical and technological advantages. Decisive for us in this decision in favour of a W & H machine was the automatic ink feeding and wash-up system TURBOCLEAN, says Francesco Meneghetti, President of Cartotecnica Veneta. Given the countless different packaging types and solutions which we produce, format and colour changeovers are very frequent. It is therefore clear that managing printing units automatically and according to a pre-set program represents an advantage both economically, because residual ink is minimised, and environmentally, since less solvents are consumed. Cartotecnica Veneta SpA is a leading manufacturer of flexible packaging materials, primarily for the food and confectionery industries in Italy. The company was founded in 1956 and is based in San Pierto in Gu, near Vecenza with 125 employees and a turnover of 47 million Euros in From my perspective, the HELIOSTAR S represents the most technologically advanced rotogravure printing press for flexible packaging on the market, so there was no alternative for us, was the clear statement of Francesco Meneghetti. Top technology, combined with top consulting by Emilio Alliegro of W & H Italiana and Markus Bauschulte from Lengerich and the top performances of the Printing Technology Centre at W & H in Lengerich ensured the whole package just worked. We feel very well looked after and are looking forward to when the machine goes into production in autumn. A decision which the management of Packages Ltd. in Lahore, Pakistan has never regretted! On the contrary: We are happy and satisfied with the investment in the HELIOSTAR SL. Thanks to our own efforts, but also to the level of support provided by W & H we have managed to achieve our financial goals by improving print quality and increasing output and reliability, accounted Syed Hyde Ali, Director of Packages Ltd. The company, created in 1956 as a joint venture between the Ali Group of Pakistan and the Swedish company Akerland & Rausing, has from the beginning done pioneering work in the field of flexible packaging. And so it was only logical that Packages not only invested in, what is currently, the most successful gravure printing machine HELIOSTAR SL, but at the same time installed the first gravure printing machine from W & H in Pakistan. Packages Ltd. is the only packaging company in the country that can offer the complete range of packaging solutions, including flexible packaging. Their clients include major brands like Unilever and Pakistan Tobacco Company. Packages Ltd. employs over 1,500 people and generated more than $140 million in sales in Shortly after the start of production of the HELIOSTAR SL, the highly motivated machine team succeeded in achieving the maximum production speed of 450m / min, so that only after three months the first shift record of 230,000 m of printed web in 8.5 hrs was set. Today, the machine produces up to 10 million metres a month, even with demanding print jobs with high ink limits and low residual solvent content, says Area Manager Asim Shamim. But Packages do not owe this success only to the high printing speed. A decisive contribution was made by the three well-trained operators, who are able to make the best use of the machine s advantages in terms of short job changeover times and minimal waste of substrate and ink, says Regional Manager Gerhard Schoone. Since its launch in 2008 more than 100 HELIOSTAR S have been sold to customers around the world. The installation by Packages Ltd. in Pakistan is a good example of high-quality gravure printing results produced in an emerging economy. 6

With this ambitious goal, the company Shongai Technologies, which belongs to the Sona Group, one of the biggest beverage packaging companies in Nigeria, was founded in By investing in the most modern machine technology made by Windmöller & Hölscher and by the development of new products which formerly had to be imported, the newcomer has since been setting new standards on the Nigerian flexible packaging market. We knew right from the beginning that market leadership could only be achieved with state-of-the-art machinery. Having said this, only the leading manufacturer of extrusion machines and printing presses could be considered as a potential partner and, in our opinion, this is Windmöller & Hölscher, is the clear statement from A. K. Mirchandani, Chairman of the Sona Group. Shongai Technologies decided to buy a 5-layer blown film extrusion line VAREX for barrier films which is the first of its kind in Nigeria and a 10-colour gravure printing press HELIOSTAR SL with a printing width of 1,300 mm. The machines were installed in a new production hall on a greenfield site and have been in operation since end of With this equipment we are the first film manufacturer in Nigeria who can offer a locally produced barrier film for oil packaging and other barrier applications, reports A. K. Mirchandani with pride. We are expecting a strong growth of this developing market, especially with regard to the packaging of cooking oil. This is why Shongai Technologies is already thinking about further investments in the extrusion sector. We had very good experience with the German-Indian service team from W & H during the quite complex installation and commissioning phase and we can very well imagine a continuation of this successful relationship between Shonghai Technolgies and Windmöller & Hölscher, explains the project leader J.G. Coreth Kunststoffverarbeitungs GmbH, recognises that he could not completely escape the fascination of this futuristic line. But the VAREX offers more than just a pretty face, so naturally it was the inner values of the new W & H Blown Film System that convinced the Austrian businessman, who already made the decision at K Although I have decided on the more expensive provider, I am convinced that the investment makes sense from an economic point, says Georg Coreth. The company, Coreth, was first founded in 1980 by Georg Coreth in Tribuswinkel in Baden / lower Austria and has since become one of the major film manufacturers in Austria, with 113 employees and an annual production of approx. 30,000 tons of film. In 1995 the company relocated to Unterwaltersdorf near Vienna, where the VAREX has been in operation since mid-august. However, it was not easy to successfully commission the machine due to the low height of the production hall in Unterwalterdorf. It would not have been possible to build the system s tower at its original height, thus not allowing the VAREX to display its advantages in terms of output. Together with the W & H customer service in Lengerich we could convince the customer that partial increase in the height of the hall represented an economically sensible investment, says Helmut Gass from ISM GmbH, the representative of W & H in Austria. This recommendation is what we followed, adds CEO Mag. Stefan Chalupnik. We were very impressed by the intense and creative support from W & H. They have always tried to find the most advantageous solution for us. Coreth also had positive experiences with their investment in a NOVOFLEX CM 8, which went into production in January Coreth had decided to take a step further in the value chain and print the produced film themselves. 8 Extrusion success stories W & H SOLD 100th OPTIMEX TO POLYKAR / CANADA The success story of OPTIMEX continues! In autumn 2009, the 3-layer blown film line was introduced to the market as an inexpensive supplement to the already known VAREX blown film line. In early 2014 the 100th OPTIMEX was sold to the Canadian company Les Industries Polykar in Saint Laurent / Quebec and will begin production in autumn this year. For Polykar it is the first machine from W & H. The company was founded in 1987 as a family business and, today, is one of the leading manufacturers of compostable waste bags for industrial, institutional and municipal facilities in Canada. In the area of mono films we have so far been very successful, says Amir Karim, Polykar s Vice President of Business Development, however, we were increasingly approached by customers requesting complex films of the highest quality. So we decided to go into Coextrusion and invest in an OPTIMEX from W & H. With the new system, Polykar will open up new markets, by the production of special films for food packaging. The OPTIMEX is the ideal blown film system to achieve this goal. It is suitable for the extrusion of a wide range of films within the 3-layer segment and stands out by its high output and excellent film qualities. Despite the attractive price / performance ratio, it is not a cheap machine, but is made from high quality components with the usual W & H precision and offers the latest extrusion technology. Polykar is a typical example of film producers who opted for an OPTIMEX, because for many of them it is their first investment in a W & H machine. The OPTIMEX, with its defined line specification and reasonable investment costs, has always served as a door-opener and as such has convinced many new customers of W & H. This trade fair will be one that Juha and Seppo Leppänen, owner of the Finnish company A-Kassi, and sales manager Heikki Suominen will not soon forget: During their tour of drupa 2012, the Finnish trio stopped at the W & H stand a purely informative visit, with no investment intentions. They knew W & H as a high-quality manufacturer, but also as a high-priced one, not for a small family business. This image had taken root in the minds of the three gentlemen. But then everything changed During the conversations at the W & H booth, the three for the first time received detailed information about the 3-layer blown film system OPTIMEX, and their outlook began to change. A short time later the deciding factor was a machine demonstration at W & H s technical centre in Lengerich: W & H was awarded the contract for an OPTIMEX in 1.3m working width. What influenced this quick decision? First of all the price / performance ratio was ideal. Added to that was the consistent excellent quality of the films produced on the OPTIMEX attribute Juha and Seppo Leppänen as the two decisive arguments. And then, of course, there s the positive feedback from other operators of W & H s extrusion lines. And this positive impression is acknowledged by the further course of cooperation. The delivery was right on time and problem-free, says Seppo Leppänen. The tower drawings provided were very detailed and well-prepared. In addition, the in-depth training of our operating staff has contributed to the production start of the system. And his brother proudly adds: All agreed performance and quality parameters were observed. The OPTIMEX has never let us down even with a single production shift! And so the answer to the question, if the decision to purchase the OPTIMEX was right is no surprise: Yes! answer Juha and Seppo Leppänen and Heikki Suominen unanimously. 8

9 extra autumn 2014 issue 23 extrusion success stories always at the top: ergis s. a. installs the First stretch Film Winder, FilmatiC Ps In 2012 the ERGIS Group (Warsaw / Poland) became the first Polish company to invest in a W & H high performance system, FILMEX, with nano-layer technology for the production of stretch films. In early 2014 a second FILMEX with Cloeren Nanolayer-Feedblock is now in operation in a factory in Olawa. At the same time they received their new winder FILMATIC PS, specially developed for stretch film by W & H. So ERGIS S. A. is the first company in the world that has a FILMATIC PS in use, a fully automated, high performance turret winder for stretch film application. The ERGIS Group is the leading film producer in Central and Eastern Europe with an annual capacity of 450,000 tonnes of LLDPE stretch film. Nearly 50 % of it is sold on the Polish market, with the other half being exported to Germany, France and Scandinavia. Two years after the start of production of our first FILMEX, we were so impressed by the excellent quality of our nanoergis stretch film we decided to double the production capacity and invest in another FILMEX says Grzegorz Kedzierski, Director of Industrial packaging at ERGIS S. A. The deciding factor was the good partnership with W & H in the field of film development and, of course, the new development of the FILMATIC PS. We had the opportunity to test our sophisticated film structures at the W & H technical centre in Lengerich and were convinced by the excellent winding quality at full production speed of the FILMATIC PS. The great advantage of the FILMEX Cast Film System, designed to produce films in working widths from 3 to 4 m, lies in its flexibility and its fast and easy start up due to its Plug-and-Play concept. Therefore the system in Olawa could be taken into production ahead of schedule, a pleased Grzegorz Kedzierski reports. The FILMEX, tailor-made for ERGIS to produce 33 nano-layer stretch film in m working width, is equipped with seven extruders. The line speed is up to 800 m / min. Our modular FILMEX is the ideal machine for companies such as ERGIS that want to supply small and medium-sized companies on the growing stretchfilm market with high quality film and be able to react flexibly to the demands of the changing market, says David Finnemore, Client Advisor for Stretch Film Systems at W & H. Korozo operates 1 st aquarex For Barrier Films WorldWide When in 2012 the AQUAREX, a machine for the production of water-cooled barrier films, was officially presented to a large audience for the first time, the management of KOROZO Ambalaj San. Ve Tic. A. S. (Istanbul / Turkey) immediately recognised the potential of this machine and this particular manufacturing process. Due to the cooling process with water instead of air, many interesting possibilities arise, to improve the film properties of barrier films in particular and to increase productivity, explains Ingo Putsch from W & H Customer Service. And so KOROZO decided relatively quickly to invest in a 9-layer machine for asymmetric barrier films used for, among others,deep-drawing packaging applications in the food sector. The company KOROZO was founded in 1973 and, with an annual production of more than 90,000 tonnes of film, over 1,600 employees across ten factories and an annual turnover of about 230 million EUR (2013), it is one of the market leaders in the Middle East and Europe today. One of their main products is deep-drawing film, marketed under the name of KOROFORM FILM and is used in meat packaging, for example. Before the installation of the AQUAREX we manufactured these films using a cast film process, reported Izzet Nommaz. But the water-cooled film from the AQUAREX has even better deep-drawing behaviour and also has significantly better optical properties. The reason for this lies in the fast cooling of the film by water, approx times faster than with a conventional air cooling, whereby the film receives a significantly more amorphous structure. This shows in particular in the increased gloss and better transparency, but also has positive effects on the mechanical properties, for example puncture resistance. The difference is visible: the film is clear as glass! The excellent deep-drawing properties, the perfect gloss and the transparency of KOROFORM have convinced our customers, concludes a happy Izzat Nommaz. The AQUAREX uses water instead of air for cooling of the film and works upside down. With great foresight KOROZO prepared for the commissioning of the new machine. 10 Converting success stories The team at Indocement presses the start button of the new cement sack line. indocement invests For the First time in a W & H Cement sack line It has always been our desire to have the latest W & H cement sack line in our factory, a long cherished dream, revealed by Pieter Herbet, head of paper sack manufacturing, because Windmöller & Hölscher has an excellent international reputation in the field of paper sack making machines. In September last year this wish came true with the commissioning of a new cement sack line AM 8105 / AD 8300, with in-line printing, automation and palletizer. PT Indocement Tunggal Tbk Prakarsa. is the second largest producer of cement and special cement products in Indonesia, which are marketed under the brand name Tiga Roda. The company, the majority of which is owned today by Heidelberg Cement Group, was founded in 1985 and employs more than 6000 people in 14 factories, most of which are located in Java. Indocement benefits from the high growth rates of the cement industry in Indonesia and a strong domestic demand, which in turn results from an increase in the construction sector. After all, Indonesia is the fifth most populated country in the world with about 250 million inhabitants. The special thing about Indocement is that the company not only produces cement, but also the cement packaging, i.e. paper sacks, as in Indonesia cement is transported primarily in sacks. To be able to meet the increasing demands in future Indocement has not only expanded their capacity to grind cement, but also made the decision to invest in a new cement sack line. And for the first time W & H was chosen as their supplier. When our new management told us that our future target was to produce 100 million more bags a year we knew that this could only be achieved with a new system from W & H, recalls Pieter Herbert. Indocement chose the latest W & H cement sack line AM 8105 / AD 8300, which is noted in particular for its low investment costs and high performances of up to 360 sacks / min. Therefore it easily meets the targets, as Mr. Sumarsono, Production Manager at Indocement, can confirm after a few months of practical experience. Our young machine teams are highly motivated to get the most from the high-performance system. It s like a little competition between the different shifts!
